The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

The new season of The Wire starts on January 6 so I thought I'd start a thread for it.

If you have HBO On Demand, the first episode is up already. I'll refrain from posting any spoilers (even with spoiler text) but I will say that it's an excellent start to the last season.

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

For purely technical reasons, I've lost access to HBO On Demand this year; so I have a very personal interest in keeping spoilers out of this thread until the episode airs at its regularly scheduled time.

I've added the same caution to the thread title that we had last year.

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

Thanks for the heads-up about HBO on Demand. Does anyone know if this season is being broadcast in HD widescreen or in 4:3 SD like the previous seasons. We only get HBO on Demand in SD, so if there is a chance this season is being broadcast in HD, I will wait until Sunday to watch the episode.

It's 4:3. I think it's safe to assume that if it was shot 1.77, HBO On Demand would have run it in widescreen.

Please refrain from mentioning anything about the episode before the episode is actually aired. If you want to mention anything about the episode you have seen on HBO on Demand please put it in the spoiler box.

sorry. didn't think I was spoiling anything since I didn't giveaway anything that happened in the scene - nor characters involved.

If I recall correctly, David Simon elected to have this season shot 4:3 for continuity with the previous seasons, keep the look & feel the same through all five.

I thought that might be the case, espacially after doing this for season 3 and 4 when a lot of HBO other programming was in 16:9.

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

Geez no comments?

It's a shame that discussion has become difficult this season and last because people watch on different schedules (I've seen 2 eps so far).

Anyway, good start to the season, and ep2 flat out excellent.

I love the fact that last season pays off in the knowledge that the mayor is infusing a truckloads of $$$ into education (at the expense of the cops ). Typical "The Wire" style payoff. It happens off screen, we know it, but we don't get to witness it and feel warm and fuzzy about it. I love it.

As the awesome, jazzy closing credits of the first episode hit, I leaned back in my chair and thought "We're back in Baltimore, life is good."

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

I thought Ep. 1 did a good job of laying down the foundation for this year. Lots of catching up with the old characters and a good introduction to the new ones.

i watched Ep. 2 last night and loved it. i can't wait to see everyone's reactions next Monday. I bet there are a lot more posts after next weeks episode. Can't wait to see where the season takes us.

i do have to say that i am going to miss Bodie this year. For me, he was one of my favorites from the first 4 seasons.

Chad,

Was your last sentence in your post a spoiler about episode 2? Some of us do not have HBO on demand and have to wait until Sunday to watch.

Bodie is dead and stays that way. I just really enjoyed the arch of his character over the first 4 seasons. Hopefully we get at least one more "Poot" scene. He always cracks me up.

I wasn't very closely but somewhere I saw someting about prequels (one was Omar). I found them at Amazon and YouTube. Interesting little ditties.

I loved the first four seasons.. I'm not sure how this season is going to work out for me, because

(SPOILER)

Warning Spoiler! Click to show
I've read repeatedly that this season is going to have a Jayson Blair / Newspaper angle about making up the news, etc. Which has almost no interest to me at all.. it just seems at odds with the great landscape of the past few years

But knowing the Wire, they might pull it off and I'd be onboard

The following is my own conjecture and so I am not putting it in a spoiler.

I think he is trying to create a new series of murders so he can get the special unit back in operation. Given that this year's season has the Baltimore Sun newspaper involved in the series I imagine someone at the newspaper will start doing an article about these "serial murders".

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

"The bigger the lie, the more they believe it" -- or something like that . As news junkie who feels the mainstream media is insulated, inept and corrupt to the core, I am loving the newspaper angle. I wonder how long the editor will remain on the right side of journalistic integrity. In this Baltimore, bad things happen to good people all the time.

What happened at the end of ep2 was a whole new level of recklessness, even for McNulty. I can't remember him doing anything that nuts. I wouldn't not be surprised if he were no longer on the force by season's end. Even bunk was freaked out.

Re: The Wire: Season Five (see post #1 re: SPOILERS)

Yeah, though pretty much I'm really displeased with that turn. Basically, McNulty tried to stabilize his life with port chick, and then walla, he's creating crimes. Yes, he's doing it to provide funding in a cash strapped city.. but still, some part of him, the part that in Season 1/2 was arguing for "proper police work" goes totally out the window in that he's constructing a case based by committing fraud so he can keep going after his target.

I think its obvious that the Baltimore Sun will follow along and get into sensationalism (I wonder how the real paper feels about it's name being used this way)... but I definitely know their can't be a happy ending to this
