HDTV volume low / cable won

Hi folks,

I am new ... have been fiddling for hours, don't understand this too much:

HDTV box audio connected (via digital optical - also tried analogue) - its an SA HD3250
to my Yamaha receiver - (HTR6040B)

The HDTV volume appears wayyy low compared to everything else (radio, DVD etc) all connected to the receiver.

I can't find a default volume setting on the HD3250 to boost it to the receiver - any clues?

Thanks so much in advance!

Re: HDTV volume low / cable won

Have your HDTV box send dolby digital instead of PCM.

Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for your help! Unfortunately - i already have this setting on the HDTV box ... Is it normal to have to boost your receiver up to about -30db to hear cable/hdtv? This seems odd!

Are these HDTV shows, with 5.1 soundtracks, or are these mostly sdtv shows that you're having the most trouble with?

You could try turning on "Midnight Mode"-- dynamic range compression, if turning the volume up doesn't solve you problems.

Thanks again Jeremy - i'll give your suggestion a try shortly.

To answer your question - this effects both the 5.1 shows, and regular SDTV shows ... there's always a huge volume disparity between by HDTV box input (quieter) and [my DVD in, and (built-in) tuner] (normal).

Thanks!

Re: HDTV volume low / cable won

DD has a huge range in volume. Some cable TV box's have a setup menu for the audio with a "Compression" setting. Set this to maximum and the box will keep the loud->soft sounds in a narrow volume range.

Re: HDTV volume low / cable won

Some volume difference between different source devices is to be expected. Some receivers even include individual input level controls to try to balance the differences.

Another thought. Both my previous Pioneer cable box and my current SA 8300 had a menu setting for volume on a scale of 0-100...the 8300, being a DVR, actually has a play and record "volume" level. I think this may be more of a max evel attenuator than an actual volume control...anyway, I always set them to 100% and used either the TV or receiver to control actual volume.

You don't indicate whether the cable box and/or receiver is new to you. I find that even channel to channel, the volume can vary quite a bit...sometimes as much as 10dB average based on the receiver's volume setting for a similar perceived output.

Re: HDTV volume low / cable won

Well if you are using hdmi to connect the cable to your tv why not try and take an optical out of the tv (since the sound is in the hdmi as well)and then into your reciever, hat way you can also use the tv control to help amp up the signal a bit.
well that will only work if your tv has an optical out and your using hdmi
