Re: Death Race Remake
You know you're scrapping for ideas when you are remaking old David Carradine B movies. What's next, Circle of Iron? Q?Lay down your law books now, they're no damned good -- The Eagles

Re: Death Race Remake
So we've come full circle: Hollywood is now ripping off Roger Corman movies for a quick buck instead of Roger Corman ripping off Hollywood movies for a quick buck. What an age we live in.

Re: Death Race Remake
Hollywood has always ripped off Roger Corman so this is nothing new. Films like JAWS, STAR WARS and the summer blockbuster owe just about everything to Corman.

Re: Death Race Remake
Much as I am fed up with almost all modernized remakes, this one doesn't bug me so much, as the 1975 film wasn't very good, is not a personal favorite, and there's room for an update on this subject.

I enjoy the movie for what it is but I do agree that something could be done with the project. If they go with the R-rating. A watered down, PG-13, politically correct film is something I don't want. If they go all out then it could work but we shall see.

Re: Death Race Remake
A PG-13 Death Race? I wouldn't put it past them but wouldn't they then have to re-title it Wound Race? What a remake of Death Race 2000 needs is an action director who is also skilled at handling the story's satiric aspects. Instead, it's being directed by Paul WS Anderson who has yet to display a flair for either action or satire.
Perhaps this will be the movie where Anderson finally reveals himself to be a great director and will put all the haters and naysayers in their places but I'm not going to hold my breath on that one.

Re: Death Race Remake
Noooo not Statham!
Surely a b-movie in the works then.. Really don“t like the guy. Crank was very very overrated imo..Death Race 2000 is a personal cult favorite but now with Statham starring.. Gnggh.

Re: Death Race Remake
I remember Anderson saying he wanted to remake this film so there was more emphasis on the actual racing and less on the pedestrian killing and satire. So, yeah, this movie is really going to suck.

That would certainly be really stupid. I remember when Tom Cruise was attached to the project he stated that he wanted it to be more violent and bloody than the original. I guess it's too bad he dropped out.

Re: Death Race Remake
Well.. this premise DOES sound like they're going in that direction.. a Longest Yard/Running Man route..."Three-time speedway champion Jensen Ames (Statham) is an expert at survival in the harsh landscape that has become our country. Just as he thinks he has turned his life around, the ex-con is framed for a gruesome murder he didn't commit. Forced to don the mask of the mythical driver Frankenstein -- a crowd favorite who seems impossible to kill -- Ames is given an easy choice by Terminal Island's warden (Joan Allen): suit up or rot away in a cell.
His face hidden by a metallic mask, one convict will be put through an insane three-day challenge. Ames must survive a gauntlet of the most vicious criminals in the country's toughest prison to claim the prize of freedom. Driving a monster car outfitted with machine guns, flamethrowers and grenade launchers, one desperate man will destroy anything in his path to win the most twisted spectator sport on Earth."

Re: Death Race Remake
So on second thought, maybe it's NOT such a good idea to bother.

What the hell... where is the running over of people for points.... Not to mention we now know the whole movie! I think this will be a rental at most.

Re: Death Race Remake
Not much of a remake, no innocents to kill for points. It's more of a PC Death Race, too bad.Sometime's you reach what's real by making believe.

Re: Death Race Remake
For a film that owes most of its allure to the promise of violent car chases and assault apparatuses, the action is badly filmed and edited (most of the time, you're wondering what the hell is happening because of the poorly put together race sequences. Paul W.S. Anderson's direction is relatively mediocre, as is the screenplay.Jason Statham plays his typical onscreen persona in the role of Jensen and Frankenstein, Joan Allen (besides have a face now pulled quite tight via plastic surgery) is relegated to a thankless role of prison warden and Death Race producer where logic and motivation is paper-thin on both fronts. Natalie Martinez is nice eye candy as the navigator and not too distracting in the acting department, though the film is underwritten from a character perspective, but barely adequate as a action-orient vehicle. Ian McShane gets plenty of mileage from the small part he has in the film. Tyrese doesn't wander too far from his typical screen persona, even if his character has a minor twist in his taste in navigators.
But if you're an action junkie, it'd be a decent rental in the future for you.
I give it 2 stars, or a grade of C.
