Re: Time to Thrown Down! 2007 Top Ten Lists

1. Once (The most authentic film I've ever seen)
2. No Country For Old Men (Pretty much what I expected; in other words, chilling but deep)
3. 3:10 To Yuma (Really opened my eyes to Russell Crowe's talents)
4. Juno (Ellen Page is irresistable)
5. Dan in Real Life (Hit a personal note with me)
6. Mr. Brooks (A rarity: a gimmick that worked)
7. Superbad (The opening dance montage alone would have been enough to place it)
8. Interview (Does Steve Buschemi ever disappoint?)
9. Sicko (Skewed, but not without merit)
10. A Mighty Heart (Very dramatic, even though the outcome is known)

Some that I haven't seen yet that may make the list (although I can't imagine anything bumping Once):

American Gangster
Atonement
I'm Not There
Michael Clayton
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Re: Time to Thrown Down! 2007 Top Ten Lists

Here's my preliminary Top Ten, based on the 78 films I've seen thus far. Order is subject to minor tweaks, although I can't see anything displacing NCfOM from the top.
  1. No Country For Old Men
  2. The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford
  3. Atonement
  4. Ratatouille
  5. Zodiac
  6. Into The Wild
  7. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street
  8. Michael Clayton
  9. The Bourne Ultimatum
  10. Reign Over Me
I'm of the opinion that this was a great filmgoing year - perhaps the best since 1999. That means there were lots of great films that didn't quite make the Top Ten. Here's just some of them (in alphabetical order):

300, Across The Universe, Amazing Grace, American Gangster, Black Snake Moan, Breach, Bug, Charlie Wilson's War, Enchanted, Gone Baby Gone, Grindhouse: Death Proof, The Hoax, In The Valley Of Elah, Juno, Knocked Up, Lucky You, The Mist, Stardust, Talk To Me, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

There are a number of films I plan to see over the next month or so (either theatrically or on DVD) which, based on reviews, could end up on one of the above lists. These include:

Before The Devil Knows You're Dead, The Diving Bell & The Butterfly, Grace Is Gone, The Great Debaters, In The Shadow Of The Moon, The King Of Kong, The Kite Runner, La Vie En Rose, No End In Sight, Once, Persepolis, The Savages, Starting Out In The Evening, Sunshine, There Will Be Blood, Waitress

Re: Time to Thrown Down! 2007 Top Ten Lists

Helluva year for great films, definitely better than last year's selection, even without PTA, Fincher, the Coens, or Tarantino reaching new career highs.

Culled a tentative top 10 from ~100 films over the course of the year, per 2007 NY/LA release dates (I'll dig up the list from the Track Your 2007 Films thread later):
  1. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
  2. Away From Her
  3. Juno
  4. The Savages
  5. Gone Baby Gone
  6. The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters
  7. In the Valley of Elah
  8. Knocked Up
  9. The Lives of Others
  10. After the Wedding

Honorable Mentions: Lust, Caution, Once, Zodiac

No Country For Old Men, Juno and Ratatouille are the top three currently, but there's nothing as dominant as Departed or Batman Begins have been in the last two years.

I can't help but ask, Jose, but what caused you to put Rescue Dawn at #56 out of 57 on your list? It was one of my favorites of the year. Just curious.

As much as I really liked Christian Bale and Steve Zahn for their excellent performances, I just thought the ending was just too unreal (even though it was true!). It was a letdown. The rest, including their escape and experience in the jungle also seemed uneventful. It was a film I really looked forward to and just came out disappointed.

Added my peliminary list, but looking though what others have posted there are clearly some films I want to check out before I mark it final. Any of the top 14 I would have been comfortable having in my top 10, which makes it a pretty great year for movies. As it stands now, I still might swap LFODH out with either August Rush or Sweeney Todd.
