Floorstanding surround speakers placement

Hi all
I've bought Denon AVR-3806 and Wharfedale 9.6 speakers for front, Wharfedale Crystal 40 speakers for surround.Namely, i have a quadro speaker setup.
I'm unhappy with my surround placement. My surround speakers are floorstanding so they are below my head. This way i can't get good surround effect i think.Should i add bookshelf speakers located above my head to increase surround effects? What can i do?

Re: Floorstanding surround speakers placement

well if the speakers can't be moved, i guess you'll just have to sit on the floor...

sorry, i couldn't help myself. you can put them on stands or bases to raise them. the tweeters should be a little above ear level. assuming these are being used as surrounds in a 5.1 type setup (i read your post as having no center), you want them behind you and facing each other. if you do use a base, just make sure it is strong, heavy and minimally resonant.

i would not add bookshelves unless you can't move the speakers you have and or you are watching movies with a lot of surround content and it's really bothering you. but if that's the case, i'd want to make sure i got the center that matched my fronts and a good sub first as these do more to enhance the movie watching experience IMO. then if you still feel like yuor surrounds need attention, try an FX speaker, something with a di/bi-pole switch.

good luck
