A few words about...™ That's Entertainment: The Complete Collection -- in BD & HD

That's Entertainment: The Complete Collection from Warner Bros. (all three of the TE productions) in high definition is going to be a touchstone for many on the fence about entering the next gen arena.

These are not your father's That's Entertainment films.

In many cases, the only easily accessible film elements available when the films were created have been upgraded on a clip by clip basis to current standards. This doesn't mean that Every clip is new, but where work has been performed, higher quality elements have been substituted.

And what this gives us is a cornucopia-like sampler of what film elements - some going back 80 years - look like in high definition. This cuts both ways.

Some of the earlier bits have an extremely heavy grain structure which will be a boon to some and a travesty to others. Three-strip Technicolor, when in perfect registration, has never looked better.

When it's out, it's obviously out, and we live with it until such time that the studio gets around to a digital recombine.

For many, especially musical fans, this is a release that in the same mode as the studio's Blade Runner, will be the final cause of the move to HD. The Fit as a Fiddle number from Singin' in the Rain, even from the dupe of a dupe from which it was created, looks unimaginably beautiful in HD, as does every other three-strip example -- even those out of registration.

As for black & white, once past the heavily grained early films, the purity and supreme lushness of a nitrate derived silver image is unlike anything that we know in the modern cinema.

These three films, which serve as a salute to the incredible talent behind them, inclusive of a reminder to once again send a thank you note to those still with us, use the format properly.

While I screened on Blu-Ray, one must believe that the HD is a mirror image.

This is high-octane high definition of the most beautiful level, giving the set the highest possible rating of Extremely Highly Recommended.

With a street price in high definition of around $50 for the set, this is one of those great gift purchases for the Holiday season, even if it's for oneself.

Wasn't "Singin' in the Rain" digitally recombined from the camera negatives?

Is there any "content" that wasn't in the SD set?

Original negatives do not survive.

I heartily concur with RAH's comments. This is not only an astoundingly great release, but it should be an ESSENTIAL part of any true film fan's High Def library.

Although I have both HD and BD equipment, I purchased the HD DVD edition earlier this week, and it is a feast for the eye...and ear. I've already ordered several of these as Christmas gifts for friends and family who have made the move to Hi Def.

For those who will be viewing the TE films in high def, please make special note of the material from both Oz as well as High Society in 1080p.

Stunning.

RAH
I recently saw High Society on HDNet Movies and it looked so good there that I am wondering if there will be a HD release date soon.

One of the things that kept me away from the SD, were the negative SQ reviews.

Re: A few words about...™ That's Entertainment: The Complete Collection -- in BD & HD

Thrilled to have just found this thread. I have the 3-disc-set on BD waiting for me to go completely through it.

RAH, the clips from singin' in the Rain: are they from the digitally-recombined master used for the latest DVD or from a previous analog-generated composite?

I concur that going through this material in HD is like a cornecopia of excitement... it just gets your blood racing seeing these clips in HD wondering how great it would be to have all of these incredible musical presented fully restored in high-definition.

Sounds like a great goal. I wonder what the first musical will be to arrive on HDM...

Re: A few words about...™ That's Entertainment: The Complete Collection -- in BD & HD

Rec'd this a year late as a gift and just watched the three films over the holidays. Loved it, loved it, loved it!

The Singin' In The Rain footage did not look like the most recent restoration, but I might be very wrong - I was entranced by the overall presentation.

I just saw TE3 last night and noticed that the clips in the third film appeared slightly more filtered - that is, grain-reduced - than the clips included in TE1 and TE2, where the grain was sharp as a tack during the clips.

I'm glad to retire the DVD set.

As an aside, does anybody find it a pain in the butt to find this set at the retail level? Meaning--I've NEVER seen it for sale, anywhere!!!

I've seen it Fry's pretty regularly. I've toyed with buying it since I got my Blu-ray player, but the Amazon reviews of the picture quality made me hesitate. Glad to see this thread. Maybe I'll get it afterall.

I have actually seen this set for sale at various places...making me wish the films were for sale individually.

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!
