Hello all.

I have my computer's audio hooked into an Onkyo TX-SR674 via a generic optical SPDIF cable from monoprice.

Over the last couple of months, while using the computer for gaming or music, the sound would cut out with no visual cues from the receiver. This would normally happen during a peak of the sound volume, happening at random intervals, sometimes a few minutes and other times a few hours between cut-outs. Once the sound cut out, the receiver would have to be turned off then back on to recognize the signal again (simply changing to another input then back would not fix the sound).

I haven't done any tests on if another input would work after the initial cut-out.

The receiver is in a TV stand, the kind where there's cardboard with a hole cut out in the back for the wires. When installing the unit I made all the connections then simply pushed the receiver into the TV stand.
(Heat isn't an issue, I have more than adequate airflow)

Today I pulled the receiver out of the TV stand, and it's been a significant amount of time and it hasn't cut out yet.

So, my question is:
Can a pinched or acutely bent optical SPDIF cable cause the signal to be lost? Does it make sense that the signal is lost and only reacquired by resetting the receiver?
...Or should I think more about defective receiver internals?

Thanks!

EDIT: Receiver cut out again while still out of TV stand.
Changing the receiver to the other input (a Wii) enabled the sound, then when I went back to the computer input, there was sound again. I am baffled.
