Re: Track the Films You Watch (2008)

BEST DISCOVERIES OF 2008:

Apichatpong Weerasethakul - A fascinating and unique Thai director. Syndromes and a Century and Mysterious Object at Noon are now among my favorites, and I can't wait to see what he does next.

Satantango - I KNEW I would love this, but when I finally got to see it (albeit on a fairly crappy DVD) I loved it even more than I expected. Mind-blowingly awesome.

Meet Me in St. Louis - I only watched this because it shows up on so many "best" lists, I had no reason to expect that I would be so giddily entertained by it. Great musical sequences and a warm story.

Rosetta - My first experience with the Dardennes, L'Enfant, wasn't all that impressive, but I really enjoyed this Bressonian tale and look forward to checking out more of their work.

Mohsen Makhmalbaf - I was dimly aware of him because of his connection to Kiarostami's Close-Up, but I had no idea how great A Moment of Innocence would be. Gabbeh and The Silence are very impressive too.

The Beautiful Washing Machine - One of those random grabs off the library shelf that actually pays off. Like Satantango, it's a shitty Facets DVD, but the movie itself is funny and disturbing and original.

For the new year, I really need to take more chances on directors/films I've never heard of.

Re: Track the Films You Watch (2008)

Looking forward to reading all of these recaps and posting my own (probably Sunday), but we're currently out of town traveling and I had only a short time for posts before we go check out Benjamin Button.

Happy New Year all and thank you for your many contributions and discussions here. I would like to say I'll be able to get back to my former participation level as I do miss writing about films and being able to have conversations with everyone here, but I doubt this will be the case. I'm just pulled in so many directions and it is likely to get even worse this year.

I was listening to a radio talk show the other day and they were discussing great Christmas movies and LOVE ACTUALLY was being picked by caller after caller. I had never heard of the movie before but I'll have to check it out now. I plan on watching ORPHANS on the 22nd but I'm a little nervous on that one even though I've seen 100+ Griffith films.

Re: Track the Films You Watch (2008)

December Update

Ended the year on a good note both in quantity and quality. I made the jump to Blu-Ray and am loving the increased picture and especially sound quality. Mario will be happy to note I finally took in the Mexican Bunuel's and enjoyed them all to one degree or another though Susana and The Young One were my clear favorites. Also finally finished off the Eclipse Late Ozu set (just in time as I recently received their Kurosawa box). I also had my heaviest month of theater going in some time, even if 3 of the viewings were over a 2 day period. This gave me my movie of the month, and pending several 2008 releases I need to see, a possible movie of the year in Gran Torino, a culmination of Clint Eastwood's many years of cinema contributions as an actor and director into a fully mature artistic vision offering laughs, thrills, nostalgia and a plainspoken honesty about life.

I'm certain you'll love Orphans, I was not particularly amused by the incredibly long running time, amped up Dickinsian melodramatics or the typical Griffith manipulations I've all come to expect from his films (thinking of his ending race-to-save in all his films). LOL my favorite Griffith is probably New York Hat because it was short and Pickford was quite good. But it was the running time I found most disagreeable, the film never seemed to be over.

Hi Brook,

I've just seen this post and, sure enough, I'm pleased with your ratings overall. It seems that I love ROBINSON CRUSOE (1952) more than anybody else around here but that may be because:

a) it was one of the earliest Bunuel films that I watched (the fourth one, I think)
b) I've now watched it 4 times in all
c) unlike the rest of you (I suppose), I've watched it screened theatrically - at London's National Film Theatre

I don't know if you've seen my "To go or not to go (BluRay)" post in the Track 2009 thread but, in case you're wondering, I still haven't taken the plunge!

Elvis Presley's 31st and last film at least tries to go into different territory as he plays a doctor working in a free clinic (!) working to help underprivileged people in the ghetto. Mary Tyler Moore is one of three nuns (her friends are singer Barbara McNair and newcomer Jane Elliot) who decide to forsake their traditional catholic garb and dress conventionally in order to go "undercover" as normal women to assist Presley in his cause. Understandably, this sets up the opportunity for them to get into all kinds of trouble in the hood, not the least of which is that Mary begins to fall for Dr. Elvis and must decide between Jesus or The King.

Presley only sings a few songs in this one, the best of which is the very bouncy "Rubberneckin' ", which I believe was revamped decades later to become a popular song all over again. Many people laugh at the idea of Moore as a Sister, but it works for me. Elvis' performance varies from time to time between rusty and competent, and at times I could accept him as a kind-hearted young doctor. It's refreshing to get something outside the usual Presley formula at this stage of his career, and the movie deals with social issues that were relevant at the time, though come off as rather stereotypical and politically incorrect when viewed today (and so what, the movie occurs in 1969). Some things are far-fetched -- did you know you could cure an autistic child by just holding her while she kicks and screams in rage, all the while assuring her "I love you"...? Even so, it's a strong scene in the film. Ed Asner, who would later star along with Mary in the classic "Mary Tyler Moore Show", has some scenes near the end as a policeman.

Erm...Joe...you do realize that 2009 has already started, don't you?
