Batman: Year One (and casting ideas)
There have been conflicting rumors that this is Nolan's next film and that he may do something else before it.
David Goyer, writer of Blade films plus some others I can't remember, is supposedly writing a script for Nolan. But Goyer was just hired to direct and write the next Blade film so I don't know how this fits into his schedule.
I think WB is still trying to get Superman off the ground before another Batman franchise. With WB's track record lately of failed attempts at Superman and other Batman projects, I don't have much faith that WB is going to cash in on the current comic book phase much less get anything to the screen worth watching. Nolan's Batman sounds promising as long as they let Nolan and Goyer work on it without studio interference (see Kevin Smith's take on his Superman experience in An Evening with Kevin Smith).
Along with Christopher Nolan's involvement, the possibility of his Memento star Guy Pearce as Batman/Bruce Wayne could make this a very interesting film.
I reiterate my statement above: the actor who plays Batman needs to be able to exude intimidation and strength as well as intelligence and wit. The screenwriter and director also need to underline these characteristics for the next Batman film to truly do the mythos justice.
Remember...no matter where you go, there you are.
Ugh. Another small guy like Keaton. When are we going to get a 6'+ guy under the cape and cowl?
He's certainly taller than Michael Keaton. The muscle could be added with some training and a special diet.
I want someone like Christopher Reeve or Eric Bana who were good choices for their respective characters because they were relative unknowns (Reeve was on an American soap opera while Bana was a TV comedian in Australia and had a supporting part in Blackhawk Down). Pearce is certainly not as high profile as Ben Affleck, Keaton or even Maguire.
Bring back John Doe! Or at least resolve the cliff-hanger with a 2hr movie or as an extra on a dvd release.

An inch. And while weight training could help, I don't know that it could reproduce a lifetime's worth of training. Still, we'll see either way, right?
well, pearce used to be a bodybuilder. and the body never forgets that sort of thing.
but at any rate, i'm all for hiring unknowns - i hate seeing a character on screen and thinking "hey. it's george clooney", or "hey. it's guy pearce". it's distracting.
the best example for me is the casting of hugh jackman as wolverine: i had never heard of him before i saw x-men, so now whenever i see him i think "hey. it's wolverine".
that's the way i'd like to experience a batman movie.

I don't feel he has to be so close to the comic short of putting a bodybuilder in the part. Christopher Reeve looked great and he was just well sculpted, not muscle bound in the least.
Look at it this way, considering the likes of Brad Pitt was rumored to be in the running, I think Pearce would be a decent choice.
I'll probably go see it anyway, I just don't know if I would rush to the theater to see Colin Farrell as Batman.
How about Clive Owen? I can see him doing some damage with or without the cowl.

Per the IMDB, Guy Pearce is 5'11". That's hardly short. THough it is just an inch more than Michael Keaton.

Dominic Purcell, formerly of John Doe. He is only 32 and his salary wouldn't break the budget.
Besides the fact that Christian is incredibly sculpted (but not muscle-heavy), besides the fact he's a classically trained dancer and sold the action in EQ with athleticism and (more importantly) GRACE, he's easily the best actor mentioned. Bruce Wayne...nailed. Batman...nailed. He wouldn't even be expensive (until the sequel).
Perfect

Take care,
Chuck
I wouldn't mind Christain Bale (I think he was one of my top picks when this topic was raised last year) as the Dark Knight. He can do "debonaire" and he can do "action".

Well their is a new rumor that Ashton Kutcher is up for the role.
great. maybe they can avoid the complaints about the CGI in the next hulk movie by casting mini-me as the hulk.
i wonder if that really is a rumour; it's hard for me to imagine that anyone, even the people in hollywood, could be so catastrophically stupid.

Batman 5: Every now and then news comes along that scares the hell out of me, today is no exception. According to E! Online it seems that not only is Ashton Kutchner a candidate for the role of Batman, he is in fact the ONLY candidate. Seems that "when now out director Brett Ratner got close to casting Superman this year, he tested and retested Kutcher, who apparently did well. The "known mostly as a comic actor and that's even a stretch" Kutcher seemed to want Bats over Supes (who wouldn't?) and is now close to being announced as the lead in the flick to be directed by Christopher Nolan". This rumour was backed up by a report from DH insider 'Turncoat' who elaborates a bit more on the situation - "Christopher Nolan wants Guy Pearce. I think that's about the extent of it. Essentially, the studio has had another 'Ratner' situation on their hands, because the director wants someone, and the studio wants someone else. That someone the studio wants is Ashton Kutcher. Thankfully, it's not as big a deal as the whole Superman thing [which has been madness], because in this place everyone gets along - and from what I hear Kutcher is the new Batman. Done deal". Thanks to 'JHBlade' & 'Micah'.
and from what I hear Kutcher is the new Batman. Done deal
i would rather jerk-off with a hand full of thumbtacks than watch kutcher even say "batman".
it would do less damage to the character of bruce wayne and the dark knight if they cast the back of my sack in the role.

I thought about looking it up but I don't know how accurate those records are, it's still a good reference, thanks Dan.
I "see" Guy Pearce as a lot taller than Keaton, which shows the perception of the actor being able to embody the character, which Michael Keaton was able to do based solely on his acting ability; the story, dialogue and Tim Burton's direction certainly didn't. Pearce is a good actor and I feel he can pull it off. Again, he's not my ideal, I'm just going by the rumors and he's the best of the lot.
Speaking of best of the lot.............

My, my, my.
Don't typecast Ashton Kutcher. Just because he's played comedy so far doesn't mean he's incapable of doing other things.
Michael Keaton was known for comedy, even though he did do drama (Clean and Sober), and I had no problem with him. As for Ashton Kutcher, part of my reasoning has nothing to do with his being associated only with comedy, I just don't want the "it-boy of the month".

Not who I'd imagine for the role, but as I've said before around these parts, he's a much better actor than people give him credit for.
I'd cast Tony Leung. For some reason, I think the role of Batman calls for an seasoned and well-known HK star.

But a big HK star would work for me. Good looking guy, capable of being physically imposing, and believable as a guy who, though he has no super powers, doesn't need a gun and is unstoppable in close-quarters combat.
