Firefox changes?

Ever since the last few forced updates to Firefox, there has been a "major" user change for me at both my home and work computers.

Now, whenever I open a new page in Forefox, the URL address is selected and "active" in the box (on the Navigation Toolbar) near the top of the screen. This is an annoyance for me as I go to type something on the page but end up typing it in the URL box instead.

An obvious example would be that I have Google's main page set as my default home page. It used-to-be that the cursor would be active in the Google search box mid-screen. But now I find myself typing in the URL box at the top of the screen.

I have been unable to find any setting change in the Firefox options menu. And, a Google search on the issue has yielded nothing. Can anyone here help me return this to it's prior settings? Thanks in advance!

Re: Firefox changes?

That is strange for you. I have 2.0.0.11 and I am not seeing that. When I bring up the browser or a new tab to google (my homepage also) the search field is the active field.

I do not remember seeing any strange behavior on the previous version either.

Re: Firefox changes?

Dennis: It's really odd. It just started after the latest updates...and it is on both my home and work computers!

I realize that all I have to do is click in the search field...but habits die hard!

Re: Firefox changes?

I have the same version of firefox and the same thing happens to me.. the cursor goes to the URL box and not the searchbox...

Probably pretty easy to do a macro for or you can simply get used to doing a CTRL-T and then a

Re: Firefox changes?

And I can't imagine why they would force such a thing.

In fact, just a couple of times today, I opened a tab to the Google page...and started typing in my search keywords. Halfway through typing in the keywords, the page finished loading, the cursor jumped up to the URL box (without me knowing) and I pushed enter...forcing me to go back and do the whole thing all over again.

This is getting even more aggravating.

Re: Firefox changes?

Here's the best way I can think to give a visual representation of what I'm talking about.

When I go to my homepage...THIS is what I see (note how the URL text in the box in the navigation toolbar is automatically selected):

So...when I start typing, the text is in the URL box instead of the search field.

And I am using 2.0.0.11 in XP.

The technical term is "focus": the address field gets focus after the page finishes loading. That might help when searching for answers.

I'm running 2.0.0.11 on XP, and I don't see this behavior. Do you have any Add-ons? You can disable them under the Tools menu. You might also try using a fresh profile.

Re: Firefox changes?

Thanks to Ken (and everyone else) for your attention and help.

Ken hit the nail on the head. It was an extension that must've gotten updated and changed it's behavior. I am running NewTabURL 1.5.2 as an extension. The original idea of this was to have it select the default URL whenever a new tab was opened (for me, Google). But there is now a new option buried within that was checked "Select location bar after loading new tab."

Well, I unchecked it (smart guy that I am) and everything is back to normal.

Jay: I hope this helps you.

Re: Firefox changes?

The real question is how you can both live in New York and be a Red Sox fan. I hop back and forth between Albany and Boston so I just have to keep my head down and shut up.

Re: Firefox changes?

When I was 9 years old (1968) my dad bought me my first baseball glove--a Spalding. It had Yaz' triple crown stats from the year before in the palm. Still have the glove. Still a Sox fan.

Take heart. My 17-year old son is an avid Yankee fan. We have some interesting discussions around the house.
