Home Theatre Wiring

I am at the point of pushing wire through my conduit in my theatre build.
This is going to be a fairly low tech build. I have gone to a couple of local shops and have been given opposing opinions on wiring. One says avoid HDMI for now and just use component cable and the other says why use component go with HDMI.

I am also looking for some wiring diagrams. I thought I just needed to run 1 HDMI if I was going to go that route but I have been told I would need 1 from the DVD to the projector and one from the HD cable box to the projector. Please help sort this out.

Components will be

7.1 Receiver
Panasonic Projector
DVD player
HD box
Blu ray in the future

Thanks

Re: Home Theatre Wiring

Hi David. Welcome to HTF!

We are still a bit on the 'bleeding edge' of HDMI. But if you are doing in-wall, I strongly recommend it. It is the future.

To avoid excess wire, you should:

- Buy a receiver that has multiple HDMI inputs and 1 output. Run this to the projector
- Buy a HDMI switch that all your sources feed, with 1 output that goes to the projector.

Remember that you WANT to run HDMI through your receiver to get the sound. If you run from the CATV box to the projector - how will you get the sound to your receiver?

Your other choice is to feed the receiver with separate optical/coaxial cables for the sound.

Re: Home Theatre Wiring

Like Bob said, if you are running multiple component or hdmi cables into a receiver to use a source switch, then use the single monitor output of the desired cable to your projector.

HDMI cables of longer runs can be quite expensive since you want to use a fairly good one for those long distances, so save yourself some $$ and just run 1 if you can.

Re: Home Theatre Wiring

Thanks for the help

I think I will run the component cable now to the projector and when it's a better time to buy HDMI I will put it through the conduit I ran. I will just run the component cable beside the conduit to leave space in the conduit for further upgrades. I am new to this so it's just a lot of questions now to prevent (minimize) the aggravation later.

Re: Home Theatre Wiring

I would say using Component is a good idea. For all of our installs we still use Component cables unless the customer truly needs the formating of a HDMI cable.

HDMI isn't an unstable cable it's just not full proof yet. We've ran into a few "errors" you could say running HDMI cables.

Re: Home Theatre Wiring

I like the rest have had my obstacles with HDMI. If you want to ensure the future you might want to look at Carlon. They make a 2" flex conduit that I have found to be a life saver. We pull that to any display head-in. The verify that your power source for your display and equipment is on the same breaker to prevent possible noise on your display.
