40TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger Star In The Academy Award®-Winning
Best Picture Film About Prejudice And Murder In The Deep South

40th Anniversary Edition Available On DVD January 15 From MGM Home Entertainment

LOS ANGELES, CA – They’re going to pin something on that smart cop from Philadelphia… maybe a medal… maybe a murder. MGM Home Entertainment revisits one of the most respected and critically acclaimed films of the 1960s when In The Heat Of The Night: 40th Anniversary Edition makes its case on DVD January 15. Part of the United Artists catalog, the anniversary edition of In The Heat of the Night is being released as part of the larger United Artists 90th Anniversary campaign, an 18-month global celebration leading up to the 90th anniversary of the studio in 2009.

Directed by Norman Jewison (Fiddler On The Roof, Moonstruck) and starring Academy Awardâ winners Sidney Poitier (Lilies Of The Field, The Defiant Ones) and Rod Steiger (On The Waterfront, The Pawnbroker), In The Heat Of The Night won five Oscarsâ including Best Picture and Best Actor (Steiger) for its intense examination of race relations in the fictional town of Sparta, Mississippi and its effect on two very different men. The film was deemed “culturally significant” by the United States Library of Congress in 2002 and selected for preservation by the National Film Registry.

When Philadelphia homicide detective Virgil Tibbs (Poitier) visits his mother in the rural south, he is mistakenly arrested for the murder of a white man simply because of the color of his skin. Once the town’s law enforcement officials learn of his highly decorated past, they reluctantly seek his help in solving the crime; leading him to win the respect, protection and overall friendship of Police Chief Bill Gillespie (Steiger).

The In The Heat Of The Night: 40th Anniversary is loaded with all-new bonus features including 3 featurettes, plus audio commentary by Norman Jewison, Lee Grant, Rod Steiger and Haskell Wexler, and more. The DVD will be available for a suggested retail price of $19.98 U.S. / $25.98 Canada. Prebook is December 19, 2007.

Re: MGM Press Release: In The Heat Of The Night: 40th Anniversary Edition

One of my all time faves, has anyone picked this up yet?
Sidney Poitier is not on the commentary but, Rod Steiger, dead for 5 1/2 years is.
What's up with that?

Gary Tooze has a good comparison up at DVD Beaver as well.
