The "HD Radio" problem here is that we adopted the same standard to be used in the UK and everywhere else in the world for it, but it is not the standard used in the U.S., thus it will be (is!) doomed to failure in Canada. Some people in some places closer to the U.S. (I'm about 40 miles I think) can get some HD radio stations. I am a big radio guy in general, and definitely would have paid more attention to the 4308 HD radio part if we had it. In fact, there is one station I like that is one of the only DAB stations left in Canada, that format bombed too.

Heh - well, DAB has been very successful here, mostly because analogue has never been done with much care or attention. We've got the big 'analogue switch off' here in a few years, when all analogue broadcasts will cease - I'm not keen on the idea, but there are good economic as well as technical arguments for it.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

I just got my 3808 and I noticed that my GUI is no longer output. I have component cables for my monitor out. I looked in the troubleshooting, and my format (NTSC) matches my display. I can get video, just no GUI. I am currently updating my firmware now. If the firmware doesn't fix this, will I have to do a hard reset (and how exactly do you do that? I remember reading about resetting the microprocessor somewhere) And would a hard reset erase all my firmware too?

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

Thanks for this info as I was racking my brain over different receivers. I almost bought a 2808 this week for the same price I paid for the 3808 at the website you suggested. If you were out in CA. I'd but you a drink.
One quick question for anyone out there, I'm looking into purchasing a 50" Panasonic PZ85U Plasma. Does anyone have a source where I may find a wallmount for a great price?

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

From what I understand you can turn off the extra two side speakers if running a 5.1. I just purchased this amp and am waiting delivery and will do the same, run a 5.1 setup.
I've read that you can run the two speakers into another room which is what I will do. Hope this helps.

You may be in "Pure Direct Mode". This disables the menus and front panel.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

After lurking for quite some time I finally broke down and ordered mine yesterday. I'm happy to post that Scott is still offering a screaming deal for $1098. Just ask for him at extension 8632. Thanks to everyone for a great forum and a ton of help.

Ben,

Can you repost the phone number? Trying to recommend this

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

There is an upgrade for the 3808 and 4308 coming sometime in October. Price will be approx $150. I stress the word approx. Both date and price are subject to change. It will add:

Audyssey Dynamic Volume
Audyssey Dynapic EQ (currently only available via pro calibration)
Rhapsody support
Siruis sat radio support (using RS232 port)
CEC control

An upgrade with Dynamic Volume and Sirius sat radio will be made available for free to owners of the 5308 and the AVP. They already have the other features.

2. Web page control seems more responsive.

3. Receiver boots up more quickly after this update then it did when loaded with much earlier firmware main 1.28 version.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

I have no idea if what I heard at another forum is correct. But I thought I would run it by everyone here and see if anyone has heard something similar?

Has anyone heard anything about the possibility of the 3808ci and the 4308ci getting a Reon processor? The thread in question claims that a Denon product manager indicated that they where considering the use of a Reon VP in the refresh of the 3808 and 4308 receivers. Wondering if anyone here has heard anything similar. At this point I am going to treat it as pure rumor!

This could be a very interesting development if proven to be true, but I am not going to hold my breath. This would definantly lock the 3808ci in for me once I have the cash.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

I wouldn't be suprised, since lower models are getting more advanced features. I wouldn't expect to see it for another year until the 3810 is launched.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

I would love it if I could update my 3808 with a new version of the Reon.

The only thing is that this would require new hardware (the actual Reon chip),

I don't think they could do it with a firmware update, unless they planned to have this update capability ahead of time.

I am using my 3808 on pass thru only right now and find that I likely do not even need to have better video processing (but would like to have it just incase). I have both a 2930 dvd player and a LG BH200........which both provide excellent dvd upscalling (slight edge goes to the 2930, but they are very close).

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

It would have to be a HW change, and couldn't be done in FW. I posted details about some new features that will be made available via FW, but you have to pay for the upgrade.

3808 for $1098? can someone tell me where? is that an authorized dealer?

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

I have been researching receivers for months now and have gone back and forth a few times. Anyway the 3808ci has been on my short list the entire time. But since money is so tight I will be going with the AVR-2809ci over a Marantz or Onkyo. I am still going to consider the 3808ci if I can get it for the same price from an athorized online dealer. It will be a few months but I can not wait to have my new Denon in my ht.

The
3808 for $1098 is very tempting but like the previous poster mentioned, is it a authorized dealer?

I am also looking to pair up a Panasonic BD30K to the 2809ci so I will finally be able to hear DTS-HD Master Audio.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

Hello all and sorry for the late reply. I've been fiddling with my new 3808 and LCD TV. The number for 6th Ave is 877-684-2831 and Scott at extension 8632 is the one who got me the deal for $1098.00 for a 3808. 6thAve is indeed an authorized Denon dealer.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

Ok now on to more meatier stuff. From reading this forum, Mr Epstein's overview, and my owners manual I', pretty sure the 3808 will do what im trying to do but I just cant figure out how.

What I would like is the main zone to be 5.1 and the second zone to be several sets of speakers connected via a speaker selector. I would like to be able to hear to separate sources at once as well as sometimes 1 source on both zones. As of now I can get 2 channel digital music via a ROKU soundbridge (I haven't ventured into the Denon's net music capabilities yet, but I will) on both main zone and zone 2. I can get my blu ray with 5.1 on the main zone with digital music on zone 2. But for some reason I can't get the blu ray audio output to both main and zone 2. I also cannot get a cd playing on the blu ray player to output to zone 2 just the main. I've reread the manual and posts but am still stuck. I'm almost certain it can be done I'm just not sure how to make it so. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you are using HDMI for your audio connection from the Blu-ray to the Denon you are not going to be able to use it as a source for extra zones. It's "against the rules" for HDMI. You can ony use analog, digital coax and toslink for multizone sources.

Thanks to everyone...I'll be sure to post again when (not if) I have questions!

Extended cable

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ordered a couple days ago...can't wait to hear 300 in lossless format - the visuals have always been great.

So instead of trying wireless for updating the 3808 I will try to use 100ft cat 5 cable. I'll let everyone know how it goes. It's a less expensive solution for just getting your updates if you don't care about internet radio. I'll use my wireless laptop on the network to save settings. Before using the connection I'll check it on my laptop to ensure signal degradation isn't too bad.

I've been a long-time lurker on this forum. I also just got my order in with Scott for $1099. I've had a Denon 4802, and am currently using an Anthem AVM20. I excited about the chance to upgrade for a super price. Thanks to you all for helping with with this decision.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

OK, firmware updates complete....now I have a question. When watching on HD DVD, HD DVD's always display mult chan in not matter what soundtrack is playing DD or Dolby True HD. When watching regular DVD's the IIx or whatever I'd want for processing shows up....

Just wondering why I get digital for all soundtracks on HD DVD's...any thoughts?

Cheers,

MC

Oh, by the way....for other lurkers - this unit rocks! P&J time
