Well one thing I noticed is that no matter how many times I run it, the Audyssey sets up my front and center as "large". My MB Quarts are great but I really don't think they handle down to 20-40 very well. I find that setting up the fronts/center to "small" then set the crossover at 80 gives me a very clean, spacious sound. My M&K v125 sub does a great job with the lows.

Does the Audyssey set my fronts/center at "large" because it detects low frequency capability? My MB Quart 1002 S are awesome speakers but not known for their ability to handle lows so that is surprising to me.

Do you recommend I keep the "large" specification Audyssey detects to give them full range? There is NO way that my center, as good as it is, can handle 20-40. Bottom line is that it doesn't sound as good to me as when I set them as small to run bass management and send the lows to the sub.

Currently I run the audyssey then change the speakers to "small" and setup the crossover frequency to 80 on the front/center and 110(audyssey setting) on the surrounds with the sub at 80. This sounds the best to me...am I doing something wrong?

One more thing I'm wondering is if I can set my fronts to 60 and my center to 80mhz without it ruining the soundstage. Do they have to be set to the same crossover frequency to be optimal?

I read the articles about setting up bass management and they talk about ALWAYS setting up your speakers to "small" and using crossovers for the best sound. Why would audyssey set my fronts/center to "large" if they can't handle lows as well as sending the signal to the sub?

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

One more question regarding the new crossover options with the Denon.

On my sub I'm setting it to "bypass" to allow the Denon to control everything. Is this correct? If I was to set it to variable then I would have to use the frequency dial to control the crossover frequency, correct? I'm assuming this setting is for recievers without all the crossover options built in.

Would setting it to "variable" ruin the sub settings I have in the Denon? I've never had so much control over the crossover frequency and I'm trying to get it all straight in my head.

There's a manual EQ setting:

Manual Setup -> Audio Setup -> Manual EQ, where you can adjust the tone quality for each individual speaker, left/right, or all speakers at once, at select frequency bands.

You can also adjust the overall bass/treble:

Parameter -> Audio -> Tone -> Tone Defeat/Bass/Treble; you'll need to set Tone Defeat to "OFF" in order to set Bass and Treble; also, Tone can't be adjusted when listening in DIRECT audio mode.

If you are going to use the Audyssey then set it to bypass.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

i'm really frustrated now.

i cannot get the denon 3808 to connect to internet radio or do a search for update.

i was able to last week but can't now.

i took my desktop downstairs to the denon including the modem and the router.

i even connected right to the denon from the modem and still nothing.

all i get is a "network problem' error meassage.

i turned off the upnp, is that supposed to e on or off?

how can i tell if i have a defective unit?
i looked in network info and no ip address shows up.

i've turned dhcp on and off.
i've turned proxy on and off.

help.

LOL sorry my bad. in trying to make it easy I made it harder. If you have the Denon hooked up to your network you should be able to see the IP address assigned to your Denon. I'm curious if you can http to that address from your web browser. http://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX where the Xs are the IP address.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

I use one ethernet cable to connect both my ps3 and my Denon atm, one at a time. Whenever I switch from one to the other I have to RE-ASSIGN the IP addy by shutting down the cable-modem and rebooting it. This includes taking out the battery and unplugging for at least five-ten seconds. Once it reboots it finds all the connected devices including the newly plugged in Denon or PS3 and assigns everything an IP address.

If I don't reboot the modem and just try to plug in the ethernet cable, the newly plugged in PS3 or Denon isn't found and isn't assigned an IP. They won't work or show up on the network.

Dynamically assigned IP addresses for new devices need to start with a modem bootup or they won't happen in my case.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

hi everyone

a nice forum you've got here

I bought 3808 last week and was wondering what was the difference between the European (no 'Ci') and US models, especially in terms of DynamicEq...

Also, does the Volume level at the time of Audissey set up make any difference?

PS I like your prices... No options here lower than USD2K

Jim-
I would just invest $20 for a 5 port switch (or a router with a 5 port switch if you don't have a router) and have both your PS3 and Denon plugged in at the same time.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

Rolan-
Welcome. I'm not sure what the differences are between the European and US versions. The "CI" stands for Custom Installation and it is a brand that Denon has for all their products in the US that are geared for custom installers. It means that it has RS232 and other installer friendly features. Other than the fact that your model is available in silver and they give the amp specs for a 6 Ohm load instead of an 8 they seem virtually identical. The front and back panels are they same, I can only assume that they are the same.

The Dynamic EQ is an upgrade (approx $300 US + calibration cost) that is available from Audyssey certified installers and can be done at anytime. I don't know if this program is available outside of the US or not.

It makes no difference what level you have the volume set at when you run the calibration.

Panasonic BD30 can bitstream it (and Dolby TrueHD/Digital Plus, as well); I believe the high-end (and high-priced, as well) Denon units can do it as well, but the BD30 is arguably the best bang-for-the-buck when it comes to standalone BD players.

4) In the 3808 Network Setup menu, you can either tell the 3808 to just use DHCP or you can choose to manually assign an IP address to it...your choice.
5) If you're still having connect issues, then check if your wireless router has a setting to enable/disable UPnP; if so, then disable it if it's not already disabled.

well i was finally ale to get in to the net radio but now i dont get any stations.

i just get server disconnected.

so what are the setting supposed to be for proxy and dhcp on and off.
at least now i see an ip address with dhcp on.

i go in to details then proxy and it is off.

when i hit on i see
address
port

what are those for.

upnp is off.

when i check for an update the connection fails.

Well I pay for 3 IP addys and two of them already go to computers. This leaves one for either another computer, the denon or the PS3. I use a hub to split.

I tried a new Dlink wireless router which worked great for wireless on the PS3 and I suppose I could hook up the Denon with a bridge but the problem was that it slowed my wired connections from 9mb/sec down to about 2mb/sec. That's just not something I can live with.

I'd try again with a different router but I'm lazy and have been spending all my extra cash on new speakers for the rear channels and cables etc etc.

As for Bluray players...the new update for the PS3 came out this week making it version 2.0 compatible...this added BD-live support and makes it "current" technology. I love the PS3 for their updates and the ethernet link. BD30 isn't 2.0 and is outdated all of a sudden.

Panny makes a good player but I'd wait until the bd50 comes out so you can get ethernet updates and upgrade the system when needed. BD-live works great and the PS3 just keeps getting better. All they need is DTS-MA support and it'd be the top bluray player available bar-none imho. I love it....even though it's a game system.

The only drawback so far for me is that I'm getting tired of the boys begging to play the PS3 all weekend when I want to watch movies or just keep it nice and safe and new. Ready for the snow to melt so I can say "GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY!" It looks really sharp too.

Does the PS3 need an external-facing IP address? If not, you should only need 1 IP address from your ISP. You would then hook the cable modem/DSL modem up to an external router (just about all of them will come with a built-in switch as well). You can plug everything into the built-in switch that is part of the router, and you should be able to support as many devices as you want.

Edit to add: Some cable modems/DSL modems come with built-in routers. You may have to go into the modem and disable the router.

Unless you are using a proxy server on your local (i.e., home) network, you should not need to enable the proxy setting (i.e., do not set it to "ON").

You said that when you enabled DHCP on the 3808, you were able to see an IP address for it; on your computer, open a web browser and type in this IP address in the address bar (assuming your 3808 is powered on and connected to the network)...does the Denon Web Setup page appear (it has a few links set against a black background)? If it does, then at least you know your home network can see the 3808...so now we just have to figure out why it can't go out onto the Internet.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

Ok I have a new question. I've been running 5.1 great but I just added two more speakers on the back wall for 7.1...

I've configured them for 7.1 in "amp" settings and they are plugged into "back speakers/zone2"...they configure correctly with audyssey but I can't get them to play any sounds at all with any source. Is putting them in the "back speakers" plugs and setting the amp to run 7.1 correct?

I noticed that you can have surround A and B...should I be just using them in surround B for the back wall?

If you have surround A and B...AND back wall surrounds wouldn't this be 9.1?

How do I get the back wall speakers setup correctly. Should they be "back wall" or "surround B"...I have them setup to "back surrounds" but they won't play anything...even in multi channel bluray content.

A little help please, I'm a total noob when it comes to setting up 7.1. I'm assuming that if I select "surround B" that they would play the exact same content as the Surround A speakers. But at least then they'd play SOMETHING...as it is(back surround) they play nothing at all.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

The lower right corner of the display shows what is being output. If there are 6 boxes then it is currently doing 5.1, if there are 8 boxes then it is outputting 7.1 Look for the SB CH Out setting. I think it's in the audio menu. It has to be set to tell the Denon to decode and output 5.1 channel sources as 7.1.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

yes I noticed only 6 boxes in the display but when I look at the OSD, everything I can set or look at shows that 7.1 is enabled.

When I fire up the bluray it even says "Multichannel 7.1" in the Denon display for a few seconds...then when I start the movie "Spiderman" it shows multichannel in but I get nothing coming from my rear speakers.

I think it's set right, I'm just not getting any sound from the speakers even though they make noise when setting Audyssey...

Do I have them plugged into the right output? Should they be in teh "zone 2" outputs with the amp set to 7.1?

Will the Denon take 5.1 content and decode it to 7.1 so I get sound out of the rear speakers when it's set correctly? Or is it that only once in awhile will sound hit the speakers?

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

haha, ok I finally got it all figured out. You are quite right, "SB Channel out" is the key.

Last question:

do I want "Matrix" or "PL IIx"...

I thought PL IIx was for 2 channel content. If I set it to this my input says "Dolby D + PL IIx"

If I set it to "matrix" my input says "Dolby Digital EX"....for multichannel 5.1 content which is preferable? Dolby Digital EX or Dolby D + PL IIx?

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

When the display says Dolby Digital you are only getting 5.1 When it says Dolby Digital + DPLIIx (or something similar) then it is taking the 5.1 and deriving the two back channels from it for 7.1. From my earlier post:

Quote:
Look for the SB CH Out setting. I think it's in the audio menu. It has to be set to tell the Denon to decode and output 5.1 channel sources as 7.1.

Edit: It's on page 42 of the manual.

Hi. I just ordered this through 6ave.com and have a question (I have not read through the entire thread yet).

This will NOT pass HDMI signals through component, correct? Reason I ask is that I would like to connect all my components via HDMI and then connect to my TV via component. My TV unfortunately does not have HDMI (I have to beg for a new tv next!)

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

Correct. It will not convert HDMI to component, but will convert component to HDMI. Most HDMI signals are encrypted, and converting it to component would un-encrypt it so it is not allowed. You can hook everything up via component until you get a new display.

Re: Denon AVR-3808CI: An Overview

It will also send everthing component & below out the component connection. I have the same issue. My tv only has component, no HDMI. I only have one component cable running to it, and everything I have is passed thru to the tv. No more changing inputs on the TV. Makes life a little more simple. Even though I am using a Harmony, I still can't get my wife to understand how to make it work. I also found out something that might help you. I am using a PS3 for my Blu-Ray. It can be set to component for the Video, & HDMI for the Audio. That way you can get Dolby TrueHD to the Denon as a PCM multi in and still get the Video to the TV with an HDMI on your TV. Hope this helps. Great Receiver so far.
