Larry Sanders: Season Two?

Rating: 0
I picked up Season 1 of Larry Sanders the other day and I can't believe how good this show is. It's like Curb Your Enthusiasm's older, smarter brother. It's almost criminal NOT to watch this show.

I'd caught it before on TV, but usually in the middle of an episode, and this is one show that plays VERY badly if you catch it in the middle of an episode, but plays brilliantly if you watch it from the beginning.

The comedy is so character based its fantastic (it's not as much of a satire some people seem to think it is). Anyways, enough of my rambling. I'm so pleased with Season 1, my question is: When are we getting season 2?

I can't wait to pick these up!

Re: Larry Sanders: Season Two?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I'd imagine that S2 is never coming out (from Sony anyway). I'm a big Seinfeld fan but The Larry Sanders Show is the best comedy of the 1990's which makes the lack of any more seasons even worse.

Re: Larry Sanders: Season Two?

I was literally just a few days away from posting this myself...I bought season 1 when Amazon had it on sale recently and have really enjoyed it so far.

I know that they released the 'Not Just the Best-of' set and I heard it sold pretty well...but IIRC, wasn't it Gary Shandling who decided not to release season 2 and instead go with a best-of?

Re: Larry Sanders: Season Two?

I want Season but I don't ever expect it. It's amazing the number of lower quality shows that sell in huge numbers but yet a show like LS barely scrapes by as far as sales. It's another prime example of sophisticated, unique, intelligent, adult shows that go virtually ignored on DVD.

Re: Larry Sanders: Season Two?

It seems that Season 1 was re-released to coincide with "Not Just The Best Of" and that Shandling has stated that Season 2 is on its way!

Maybe we should start emailing Sony?

A friend has all of them on VHS and I've borrowed them.

If they ever came out DVD they would be must buys.

Argh... Wrote this by accident. Don't know how to delete!

So, um. Would be people be interested in popping an email off to Sony if it was all written for them and there was an email address?

Re: Larry Sanders: Season Two?

Considering the fact that Sony's new thing is to drop everything to pick up long-abandoned series, this might have a chance after all.

Well according to the Digital Bits, It's Garry Shandling is being released in its entirety on DVD... where's Larry Sanders? :(

I don't really understand why people are asking "Where's Larry Sanders?". It didn't sell well enough, folks. So that's where it is . . . nowhere. Don't be foolish enough to assume that any company is going to continue to release a product that they did not profit from. Why on earth would they do that ?

Try buying the complete series set of It's Garry Shandling's Show and maybe that will arouse some interest in another season set of Larry Sanders be released. But don't count on it.

Maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but I thought one reason we didn't see more Larry Sanders was because Garry Shandling didn't want all of the series released (?).  That was why we got the hand-picked, extras-laden Not Just the Best of the Larry Sanders Show.

Again, I may be wrong - but I seem to recall hearing that around the time the "best of" was released.

Wow. Way to be sympathetic towards Sony, the most-hated TV-on-DVD company of all time.

Ever thought that Sony didn't do any promotion for that show at all?

That was definitely the rumor but that doesn't make any sense to me. Garry Shandling doesn't have the clout to control the release of his work. I doubt he would have had the foresight to have some type of clause like that in his contract or that any studio would give him that power either. If the first season or best-of set had sold, Sony would have released S2 with or without his consent. That being said, I hope that It's Garry Shandling's Show sells well and someone releases a similar set of The Larry Sanders Show... but I'm not holding my breath.

I don't know about that. Shandling was both co-creator and co-executive producer of The Larry Sanders Show, so he seems to have more control of the series than you believe. But a more significant factor holding up release of the entire series on DVD may be Shandling's feud with co-executive producer and former manager Brad Grey. During the Anthony Pellicano trial, Shandling testified that he and Grey each owned half of The Larry Sanders Show.

I always thought the main reason the 1st season set of Larry Sanders didn't sell well was because it was priced way too high for a 3 disc set.

It stayed at this price point for ages too! If Sony had reduced the set earlier - or better still, given it a more realistic price point to begin with, we may have seen more innitial sales and future season releases later on.

I still think there's a market for this show and Sony are really missing out here.

I do specifically remember that Shandling himself blocked further season-set releases of Larry Sanders. That's not to say that S1 sold well enough for Sony to want to continue. It may not have. But Shandling did say publicly that he had no interest in releasing season sets after S1.

Someone better tell Sony to take The Larry Sanders Show off On Demand then. It seems odd that Sony controls them there but not on video.

No, no, no. That's all nonsense. Shandling did not block the release of the other DVDs. He was involved with the release of the series on DVD after Season 1. He decided (in a misjudged attempt at getting the series some attention) to do a "Best of..." with a huge amount of Special Features that he filmed. When that didn't sell too well, Sony put the whole thing on ice.

Here's an article about the "Best Of" boxset:
http://www.avclub.com/articles/not-just-the-best-of-the-larry-sanders-show,7876/

"Shandling insists that more Larry Sanders Show DVDs are coming, and the season-one set has been stealthily re-issued, with season two reportedly on the way."

I want all those extras, but I want them with the entire series, too :(

I think the idea that Garry blocked anything is utterly absurd. Where are people even getting these ideas ? The man put years of hard work into the show and owns part of it. Why would he not want it released ? I noticed that no one has been able to post a link to any interview or article where Garry states that he has held up further releases on purpose. So where's this nonsense coming from. Perhaps legal issues between the owners are a problem or that the series just didn't sell well enough.

For the record, the show WAS indeed given a good amount of advertisement on television and in print. It hardly flew under the radar. You can accuse big, bad Sony all you want but that doesn't automatically mean that they are to blame. Sometimes the problem is actually with the buying public.

Also, with regard to the high price upon the first season's relase, yes it was high. But this is quite common for cable series when they are released on DVD. A lot of people will pay extra to get a show that they did not originally see because they do not have cable or satellite or did not have the channel the show aired on. Studios know some people will pay more in these situations for a "niche" series. It's manipulative but very common. Anyone ever pay full retail price for a season of The Sopranos ?

It is not absurd at all and not outside the realm of possibilities. The original version of the Star Wars Trilogy, anyone? And where TV is concerned, Mike Judge has said that 1/3 of the episodes of Beavis and Butt-head will never be available per his request because he hates them.

I will continue to blame "big bad Sony" because it is still big, it is still bad, and it charged more for this show than anyone was willing to pay when you consider the reprehensibly bad picture quality.

I'm afraid I agree with David Rain... it's crystal clear that Garry Shandling is very proud of Larry Sanders. While it's not "outside the realm of possibility", it's highly unlikely at best... especially considering the quote I pulled and the massive amount of time and effort Shandling put into the "best of" boxset.

I'm even willing to accept that maybe he has some weird comedian hangup and feels that there's episodes of The Larry Sanders Show that aren't good. What I find nearly impossible to believe is that he has any power to stop Sony from doing what they want with the show. If the first season or the best-of set had sold, S2 and beyond would almost definitely be out now whether Shandling wanted them out or not.

Yeah, I'd agree with that... sadly. I hope they figure it out soon enough... Hard to believe "Garry Shandling's Show" (which wasn't bad or anything) is out, but Larry Sanders isn't :(
