The R&R Hall Of Shame is at it again!!

I visited the HOF about 10 years ago, and remember liking it and wanting to re-visit at some point in the future. As far as I'm concerned, that's officially off the books now.

I can see Madonna and Mellencamp going in for sure, but what the heck are those others doing on there. I could even see the Beastie Boys, but isn't it a bit early for them? Are they counting some rare, early EP for their recording debut? ..and if Rap is not getting in, what about Run DMC or LL Cool J.

Where the heck is Black Sabbath, Rush, Judas Priest, The Cure, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Devo, etc..., etc.... Instead they come up with a couple of disco acts and a few other odd-balls. I even like a few of those acts (Leonard Cohen & The Ventures), but HOF material they are not.

Here are some more possibilities:
Duran Duran & Depeche Mode (Innovators of the Synth Pop song)
Ministry (Almost single-handedly created the sub-genre Industrial)
Iron Maiden & Metallica (Where would metal be without them)
Yes
ELO
Styx
etc...etc...etc...etc...

Absolutely shameful

Best not to think about that place, dude.

We had a long thread here on how silly it is a few months back.

PS Black Sabbath was inducted 2 years ago.

Worrying about this is like worrying about the AFI movie lists- not worth the effort. I'm the sure they've got great bands in the hall (and I'm sure there's non-hall bands that deserve it more than other bands that are in there) but in the end, it's about what the listener likes and not what a group of people like.

I would consider Leonard Cohen and The Beastie Boys as locks though.

While I tend to agree with you that these sort of honors are somewhat meaningless, I have feelings that are just as strong in the opposite direction. For people like us, these are fairly useless, but you have to think about people who are not as inclined to seek out the great music, and what about future generations? I know we won't be here to see it, but it makes me shudder to think that future generations may go there and think that Chic was one of the most important bands of our era. After all, if previous generations had not flagged Frank Sinatra, Charlie Parker, Al Jolson, or even Beethoven as important, where would we be now? That's a scary thought actually. Maybe, there were artists much better than them, that are now lost to obscurity!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

PS Black Sabbath was inducted 2 years ago.
I guess with all of the delays in their induction and Ozzy's repeated statements, about not caring, I failed to realize that they actually went in.

I would consider Leonard Cohen and The Beastie Boys as locks though.

I agree, it just seems like there are more important acts than Cohen waiting for induction and the Beasties Boys seem like a bit pre-mature. After all, the rules are 25 years, and this takes us back to 1982. I don't think that many people were raving over the "Pollywog Stew" EP in '82. They didn't release a full-length 'til '86 and their best album "Pauls' Botique" until '89. There are more important hip-hop acts from the early 80s, so what's the hurry?

This was the final paragraph from the Chicago Tribune's article on the whole fiasco.

If I were in a rock 'n' roll band, I would rather be in the non-club that includes XTC, Television, the Zombies, Tom Waits, Love, the Hollies, the Stooges, Fairport Convention/Richard Thompson, Squeeze, the Specials, Nick Lowe, Nick Drake, Graham Parker, Irma Thomas, Electric Light Orchestra, Genesis/Peter Gabriel, the Buzzcocks, Randy Newman, Roxy Music, Procol Harum, ABBA, Big Star, the Mekons, Yes, Rush, the Spinners, Gram Parsons, War and the Monkees.

...and they didn't mention half of the bands that I did.

Good question. I personally can understand Judas Priest and The Cure from that list not being inducted, but every other band there absolutely belongs.

Chic? Are they serious? The R&RHOF is like the new artist Grammy, most likely never to be heard from again.

If Chic is nominated I hope Donna Summer is there already.

Re: The R&R Hall Of Shame is at it again!!

At this point, shouldn't they just remove "Rock and Roll" from the title and just put "Pop Music"?

All the different music genres are valid but if you have "Rock and Roll" in the name, shouldn't it just be that?

Pretty soon they will be taking bands from Big Joe's Polka show.

"Music Hall of Fame" seems more appropriate.

Help get \"The Resurrected\", John Carpenter\'s TV films (amongst others) released on DVD! Click on the following link to learn how.

Well, in all fairness, the Rock Hall is located in Cleveland.
