BC wasn't very good, though. A Green Arrow/Black Canary pairing in the Smallville universe would look like Phil Laak teaming up with Patty the Biker from The Jerk.

Re: Smallville - Season 7 thread

I agree 100% with Patrick's assessment of the Lana/Clark relationship. Another thing that bugs the crap out of me is Clark's total inability to grow up and get on with his life. How many more times do we have to watch Oliver taunt and lecture Clark about doing something useful with his superheroic gifts? And, how many more times do we have watch Clark stand there and offer ZERO in the way of response? What the heck is his problem? Sheesh! There literally is NOTHING to keep him in Smallville these days. His father passed away. His mother is off doing her thing. The farm serves no useful purpose. He's not in school. He doesn't appear to work a day job. And, he seems to have no desire or inclination to further his education/training and move along the path to fulfilling his ultimate destiny. Somewhere along the way Clark has become Superslacker and this show is suffering as a result.

I'll agree the actress wasn't very convincing and the character is too reliant on purile thrills for me. (I much prefer the Justice League Unlimited version of BC.) A simple recast and tweak of the character might work.

Meh, it was enough for me to see Green Arrow back. Almost made the entire season worthwhile.

Re: Smallville - Season 7 thread

I agree that Clark needs to get his ass in gear, this was the second time that Oliver had to lay down the truth and call Clark out on his unwillingness to help the cause and do something meaningful with his life.

I don't agree however that Lex is out of nastiness, he's capable of much more.

Re: Smallville - Season 7 thread

I enjoyed tonights episode, I always love it when episodes center on Lex and his twisted mind. I also found it admirable that Clark tried to reach Lex at the end, to try and remind him of the friendship they once had.

All for not, though.

Plus, on a strictly technical standpoint, this was the very first episode that I got to watch on my new HDTV and I couldn't stop marveling at it. So did I REALLY like the ep or is it the extra resolution talking? I'll let ya know when i've had time to think about that myself lol.

Re: Smallville - Season 7 thread

A big old "meh" on my part. It felt like a reason to throw some flashy (and COMPLETELY unneeded) lights up in American Gladiators/Millionaire fashion and to waste another half hour getting to the same place we could have gotten to if Chloe stepped in from the beginning.

I mean, come on. Aside from keeping Chloe "safe"-which she wasn't in the end, anyway-what was the point? Fine, it was kinda cool to see Clark inside Lex's head but it was by no means the best way to get to Kara. But what did we learn? That Lilian blamed Lex for opening his mouth to Lionel? OOOOHHHHH....major revelation there. Sorry, thoroughly unimpressed after last week's Green Arrow episode. And another repeat (seemingly) next week.

Re: Smallville - Season 7 thread

It was a trippy episode, Rosenbaum was cracking me up as evil Lex inside his head about to choke Alexander. And then when he was Clark's punching dummy. Good stuff.

Re: Smallville - Season 7 thread

I thought the set up for getting inside Lex's mind was awful (especially Lex being moved instantly from Detroit to the Smallville Medical Center, lol. As if Detroit doesn't have competent medical staff - or if they had to move him, Metropolis!)

The stuff inside his mind was okay, but nothing substantial.

Probably the weakest episode of the season, IMO.

If they wanted to do it with more guts, they would have had Chloe revive him and have him refuse to tell where Kara was. Then, Clark and Lionel would force him to do the mind thing.

Re: Smallville - Season 7 thread

What a waste of an episode IMO. I do not tune in to see the man (or boy forever in this series) of steel running around someone's mind.

I'll say it again, I've been a fan of this series from the start but, that is quickly changing with these wasteful episodes. Will they ever get back to the growing up to be Superman storyline? The only reason I continue to watch is because i don't want to miss the eventual conclusion to the series and story after watching it for all these years.

It woulda been a neat twist if after, Lex had Clark's memories as well. In other words, the doctor was wrong about the subject remembering.

I think that is the BIG problem with Smallville right now, Chris. They are there, so to speak. As I said in my earlier post, besides training, what the heck else is there left for Clark to do in Smallville?? I mean, really.

It looks like the CW is going to try and wrangle another year out of the show, but if the main storyline doesn't seriously shift to "Superman in training" mode, I am going to pass until the last couple of episodes just so I can see the series finale.

I have finally reached the point of burnout with Clark/Lana, Clark/Lois, Clark/Lex, Clark/Lionel, etc. NOTHING ever comes of these pointless encounters/confrontations. Not only is the future written, it is etched in stone! There are ZERO surprises, just constant re-boots back to square one. The Green Arrow stuff, and to a lesser degree, the Chloe stuff, continues to entertain, but the rest of this... Sheesh!

I almost fell on the floor laughing when Lionel said, "...It's a good thing Lex was immediately flown here from Detroit," after taking a bullet to the head. Like THAT would ever happen!

Re: Smallville - Season 7 thread

My guess is that the CW discovered that the wrong demographic was watching the show and decided to turn it into Superman-90210 to recapture the younger crowd.

Most Sci-Fi shows tend to draw an older group who have a longer history of reading and appreciating the genre; not the group to go out and buy the latest ringtone they heard during the commercial. As an over-50 viewer, the advertisers don't want me to watch the CW, they think I should be viewing CBS (not a single show that I watch).

I completely agree Gary.

After all these year Clark still hasn't learned to fly so, there is still a little training left to do.

Some of you who have seen me in these threads know how big a fan I am of this show but even i'm losing my patience now. I'm beginning to believe that if this show lasted 10 seasons at the end of the tenth season Clark would still be wearing his red jacket and blue shirt and moping around Smallville.

Miles Millar and Alfred Gough need to get him in gear already!! This is not fun anymore, hell in every other incarnation of this story he'd of been Superman for a couple of years now! They need to get bold, have Clark sell the farm, complete his training and go to work for the DP...it's time to get him out of Smallville and move him into adulthood!

Superman is 29 years old.
Clark will be 20 on February 29, 2008.

He still has 9 years to go before he has to be Superman.

I emailed the webmaster for the Krypton site. I basically asked if the producers knew that even longtime fans are starting to get annoyed about Clark not training to be Supes and moving on from Lana. This is the reply...

I think ultimately they do want to move Clark away from Lana and towards his Superman destiny. The next few new episodes, starting next month, SHOULD deal a little with that... I hope, at least.

Re: Smallville - Season 7 thread

to inspector hammer and all others who enjoy this in HD-CW.

do u notice heavy macroblocking? i haven't watched this seasons for quite a while. back when UPN/CW transition happened, i watched smallville in HD and i noticed a TON of macroblocking errors during higher bitrate scenes. it's also just in stereo. isn't that so 1990's? yeah i know budgets, blah blah blah. even if they DPL'd it and broadcast that in 5.1. i would still be happy just to fool us.

i haven't rented the blu-rays yet, but technically it's supposed to be in 5.1 on those HD discs. or maybe it's just 5.1 suroound field with information only in the stereo left and right. i know the SD DVDs are merely 2.0. this has always been a point of contention in terms of audio with this series. .

finally, to address the demographics. i think smallville was always 90210 from day1 . i caught seasons 1-5 on DVD, but afaik, smallville has always been on networks that are geared towards 90210 crowd. currently, all of CW's series is pussycat dolls presents girlicious, top model, etc. those are all 90210 crowd. even supernatural is populated by, like, totally hawt guys . so... it's no wonder the lana-clark element is the center of attention. it's also geared towards new-to-smallville viewers. of course, it's a terrible rut for SF fans who like the superman mythos. but hey, isn't it all about the almighty dollar? remember who is footing the bill for smallville, the advertisers targetting CW demographics.

Yeah, I've mentioned it before. Their cameras can't handle fire or rain very well. Last week, there was a flash of lightning or something like that and it was terrible.

it's not the camera's fault, it's the broadcast. the HD discs look pristine afaik.

Yep, I did notice some of that during brighter scenes as well, the colors looked amazing, though. Watched the new Knight Rider in HD last night and it looked incredible.

Re: Smallville - Season 7 thread

I wrote a wicked long blog entry about what Smallville needs to do at some point during last year's season. No need to repeat the entire thing here, but I think my conclusion was pretty much spot on. In order for the show to be good for the remainder of it's run, they need to set an end date. I've heard (don't know if it's true) that the producers intend on next season being the last one. Once they figure out exactly when the show will end (as far as production), they can start working backwards so they can go through the training and get Clark up to speed without dragging it out for too long or not long enough.

Coming up with an end date is everything for this show simply because it's a prequel-type story where we know what the end result will be. It's sort of suffering through the same thing that the first two Star Wars prequels did; everyone knew how it was going to end, but watching George Lucas stumble along to that point wasn't as interesting as it should have been. Episode III was better in no small part because it was the last one, and they didn't have to build up to anything anymore; all of the pieces were lined up, the ending was a foregone conclusion, so all that was left to do was let it all play out in glorious fashion. That's what Smallville needs to do.

That said, despite all of the show's (many) shortcomings, I still find it entertaining on a weekly basis. Even if I know better.
