how much earphone is too much for IPOD/MP3

Hi, I hope this thread is in the right place I've been considering upgrading to a set of premium in ear canal earphones (maybe something in the Shure line), and having a frustrating, if fairly understandable, time in not being able to sample anything of them. So, while flying blind I'm wondering at what point will the 'phones reveal limitations in the recording and be "too good" for me? I'd hate to spend more than I should and actually end up hindering the listening experience. I listen to MP3s at 256 bitrate. Thanks.

Re: how much earphone is too much for IPOD/MP3

I went through the same thing when I got mine--I ripped all of my cds at 256 vbr and ended up going with the Sennheiser cx300 and have been very happy with them. I probably could have gone up to $100 and still felt comfortable at that bit rate. The $50 was well spent in my case.

Re: how much earphone is too much for IPOD/MP3

I've had the EC2's with my iPod and they're very good and mate well with the iPod. I ended up selling mine though as they just didn't suit my listening style at work as I'm constantly interrupted and they're a pain to put in and out all day.

i just have a pair of $20 Panasonic in ear, ear buds, (like the Shures, not the junk ipods come with) very comfortable and seal up pretty good

mp3 sq isnt worth spending much money on, imo

Re: how much earphone is too much for IPOD/MP3

I have the $29 special pair of Creative Labs ear buds. That was retail price, too. You can find them for less on the Web. The sound is quite good, as the reviews suggest, with my Sonos player. Enjoy!

The ipods support apple lossless. Some MP3 players support FLAC. If you have a headphone amplifier, many high end headphones will sound just fine.

Re: how much earphone is too much for IPOD/MP3

i don't like ear buds so I listen to mine with the same headphones i spent years listening to my discman with a pair of Grado sr80's. I can't tell any diff between sr60, sr80 and sr125's with the ipod so i stick with my old comfortable pair of sr80's (my wife absconded with the 60's and the 125's are at my computer desk)

Two articles from slate:
Portable Audio for Snobs
Listen Up WHICH HEADPHONES ARE BEST?

Yeah, I know, slate isn't known for it's audio reviews, but they may be useful.

I like Grado SR-80s, but the open air mechanism may not be best for your purposes.
