Re: Journeyman - season 1 thread
Since this thread will be dying out soon, might as well comment and speculate while I can. A couple of points about last night's episode, 'The Hanged Man.'
1. New paper view technology (the moving images on paper) has already been developed by Siemens. It was unveiled to the public back in 2005. In other words, this technology exists, but is not remotely cheap enough to be used casually. The acceleration of this technology was pretty interesting, as were the giant holographic screens (again, something that has been developed, just not nearly ready for mass production).
2. I also had a problem with how casually Dan and Livia allowed the camera to (at first) get into the hands of others. I'd have grabbed the camera and booked it out of the building... after all, there was no evidence that the camera wasn't Dan's. They knew better. This part of the plot just struck me as unnecessary.. Dan could have found out about the camera in a way that didn't give him direct access to it (like, in a locked room or something while the boy overhears him talking about it).
2. Here is an interesting passage about the Hanged Man card in the Tarot:
Quote:
| The Hanged Man, in similar fashion, is a card about suspension, not life or death. This is a time of trial or meditation, selflessness, sacrifice, prophecy. The Querent stops resisting; instead he makes himself vulnerable, sacrifices his position or opposition, and in doing so, gains illumination. Answers that eluded him come clear, solutions to problems are found. He sees the world differently, has almost mystical insights. This card can also imply a time when everything just stands still, a time of rest and reflection before moving on. Things will continue on in a moment, but for now, they float, timeless. |
3. Dr. Langley is a creep. I don't know if it's the actor's decision to speak to Dan like he's reading from cue cards, but his complete and total disassociation, even when he's acknowledging Dan, strike me as highly sociopathic, or at very least, highly paranoid. However, his inclusion in the series is interesting... he's kind of like a less helpful jerk version of 'deep throat' from the X-files.
4. On Wednesday, a few things will unfold. Livia's wedding in the past will be interrupted by her 'leaping' into the 'present.' Dan will meet another 'journeyman' (who I psuspect may end up either being evil or doing the government's bidding, as Langley warned). After all, now that Mr. FBI rogue is dead and his brother is a self-proclaimed 'believer,' Dan needs a foil, and the season would have needed a (apologies to Buffy fans) 'Big Bad' for him to go up against.
Of course, we will never be able to see this unfold as it was meant to. This wonderful show is toast. Thanks a whole hell of a lot, NBC, for making it clear what your priorities are. Instead of a mature, sophisticated drama/adventure, we're stuck with a full season of a smirking Michael Bolton showing off way more of his naked chest than any viewer - woman or man - should ever have to endure.
