The $95 for the deluxe edition is based on a list price of $135 for this. The discounts works out to be 30%. I will definitely be only purchasing the standard edition.

Re: The Beatles' Help: 2007 2-Disc Re-Issue (Oct. 30)

To be fair, the accompanying photo book looks like it'd cost a good $30-40 on it's own:

Plus you have the "typical" extras that would make up a package like this, which usually tack an extra $25 onto the price tag: poster, lobby cards and in this case... a reproduction of of the original annotated script.

~ $90 US seems reasonable, if just for the inclusion of the hardcover book.

Btw, if that white thing in the photo with the black lettering is the poster... it kinda sucks.

Also, can anyone confirm if the 30min. "making-of" included here will be the same as the MPI (or was it MVD) 22min. release of "behind the scenes" 8mm film footage with the Beatles?

Re: The Beatles' Help: 2007 2-Disc Re-Issue (Oct. 30)

Based on the press release, it sounds as if the "making of" will feature Richard Lester and have "exclusive" footage from the set, so I would think it's something newly created.

As for the poster in the box, it appears to be a folded version of this:
http://www.moviegoods.com/movie_prod...vie%5Fid=13311

Probably will unfold to about 24x36 I would guess.

I don't know, that still seems a bit steep to me, even with the book and script.

The poster looks like it's still folded in the photo, so the black lettering is probably just the credits at the top or bottom of it.
(EDIT- I see Derek posted just before I did. )

I was going to sell my MPI VHS copy, but I think I'll make sure the same "8 minutes of rare bonus footage" is carried over onto the DVD before I get rid of it.

Re: The Beatles' Help: 2007 2-Disc Re-Issue (Oct. 30)

Too bad they didn't go with the "A" or "B" style, or even the German masterprints that are graphically more interesting.

A 60 page full colour hardcover book filled with production photographs is quite impressive imo and easily justifies a $30-40 price tag. I'm sure you'd see it in bookstores for at least that price, nevermind it's exclusivity. A normal two-disc "limited edition" gift set in WHV fashion with lobby cards and such generally run around the $30 US mark. Tack on the extra cost of the book and the reproduction script and your pretty close to what I'd consider a reasonable cost, give or take $10. I'm not saying it's a fantastic deal or anything, but it's not an outlandish price tag either considering all that's been divulged in the press release. Remember how much the E.T. gift set sold for upon release?

As for the "making-of" -- it's nice to have a new docu. with Lester involved and everything, but if I've learned anything from past Beatles movie releases (AHDN) it's that less "extras" and more poignant features involving the foursome themselves, without the insight of every member of the production crew, gaffers, caterers, hair stylists, etc. would be much better served! The second disc of the AHDN set was almost utterly useless to me. A lot of dickering about how nice it was to interact with the boys on the set from people nobody cares about.

It's a shame that the previously issued "making-of" won't be included and I'm not quite sure why as that's as great a compliment to the film as can be offered. If the four 8mm reels of the Beatles behind-the-scenes are out there, than why not include them on this set?? It would seem like an easy and obvious way to tack on useful accompaniment to the film itself. I hope I won't have to track down the old out-of-print MPI copy of that release now. I was sure it'd be cleaned up and included with this film's reissue eventually.... :/

Finding out all sorts of tidbits over at the Steve Hoffman forums...

Evidently after Paul Rutan restored 'Help!,' a clean interpositive was found, and color seps were made for protection before Walter Shenson died. They struck a new print hard-matted for 1.66 that screened at Telluride recently (in 5.1)!

I read that this was delayed a week, to Nov. 6. Any confirmation?

Saw an item on it at http://www.musictap.net

Not a big deal in the scheme of things.

I just went to check this again on Amazon, and the standard $20 edition now is listed as "no longer available". So......it's the deluxe $95 edition or nothing, now?

Other sites are still listing it as available.

Actually, the "deluxe or nothing" would be the excuse I need to splurge.

The Amazon listing is there for the $20 version:

Could be that it was changed when the date of release changed (to Nov. 6).

Re: The Beatles' Help: 2007 2-Disc Re-Issue (Oct. 30)

I watched this latest release on a Toshiba 42" 1080 display - through a Sony NS75H player and there were narrow vertical borders on either side of the image so perhaps it is 1:66? As far as the actual image is concerned the colors are much richer with better detail and I thought the 5.1 mix was pretty good overall. I do have the original MPI dvd which I will keep - just for the sound track.I will have to watch the extras soon.

Just a reminder that Circuit City has the "standard" edition on sale for $15.99 and Best Buy has it for $17.99. I would guess that BB will be adjusting its price to match CC.

I don't know, but I think I've decided against the deluxe version- it's just too overpriced for what you get. Usually when it's a movie/group that I really love, I'll get the upgraded version of the dvd/cd, but this just smacks of gouging to me.

Here's a few comparisons between the 4x3 MPI DVD (1997) and the new 16x9 Apple/EMI/Capitol DVD (2007):

The end credits used to be plagued with dirt and scratches, but it's now 100% pristine.

I rented both discs from Netflix. In the sleeve that was supposed to be disc 1, it had disc 2. I played it, and it was in fact disc 2. The two discs I received looked exactly the same. I watched the first one, and mailed them both back this morning. It didn't occur to me that maybe the other "disc 2" might've actually had the movie on it!

Re: The Beatles' Help: 2007 2-Disc Re-Issue (Oct. 30)

Deluxe Edition = idiotic packaging (as is usually the case).

I just picked it up and I'm very glad I bought it at a local retailer instead of ordering online (though I paid full price which came to around CAN $125 w/ tax)!

The disc hubs are nothing more than two cheap round pieces of foam that are glued (ineffectively) onto the front of the book.

Naturally both discs (and foam hubs) were floating inside the package when I opened it up, but luckily were still in fine shape. I simply pressed the foam hubs back into place firmly and placed the discs onto them. Though they don't hold very securely and are an absolutely stupid and cheap way to package. Especially for such a damn expensive box set!

Otherwise everything else looks wonderful!

My only other minor complain would be that outer wrapping with the sticker on it. It would've been nice if it were simply a slip that was enclosed on both sides so that you don't have to unwrap/unstick each time you want to open up the package... Of course many people will just toss that out but I think it looks real nice (and let's be honest... that's why most people are paying the exorbitant ammount for this set) and is a convenient way to hold everything in place within the box.

But without having actually watched anything yet, I'm very happy with what I've got and feel like the price is justified based on what was included. I'm sure the book and script add an extra $40/45 along with the deluxe packaging and box itself plus the lobby cards and poster... it's quite a beautiful package.

Re: The Beatles' Help: 2007 2-Disc Re-Issue (Oct. 30)

I have the regular 2-disc set and I am not thrilled about the packaging in it, either. I have never liked the cases where the discs are stacked on top of each other.

I am also wondering why this even needed to be a 2-disc set. The first disc contains the movie that is 90 + minutes, and the second disc contents are less than 60 minutes.

The film is 96 minutes, but it has PCM stereo and DTS 5.1 soundtracks, so that's probably why.

Does anyone else think that it's weird that the only 5.1 option is DTS? There is no Dolby Digital. I'm not complaining...the DTS mix is incredibly dynamic, but I think this is one of the only DVDs I have with DTS being the only 5.1 option.

BIG thanks for that!

The original DVD will retain its value (I thought it would go down after this release. Butt, just like the original "AHDN"; it has something 'extra' to offer Beatle fans).

The various Queen concert discs are set up this way.
