Stop Worrying ... Help! Is on the Way!Apple Corps Ltd Proudly Announce the DVD
Release of the Beatles Film 'Help!', October 30th

LONDON, Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Apple Corps Ltd have announced the eagerly
anticipated DVD release of The Beatles' second feature film 'Help!' on October
30th (October 29th ROW) which will be marketed and distributed by EMI Music.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20070904/LATU079)

Directed by Richard Lester, who also directed the band's debut feature film 'A
Hard Days Night', 'Help!' made its theatrical debut in 1965. The story follows
The Beatles as they become passive recipients of an outside plot that revolves
around Ringo's possession of a sacrificial ring, which he cannot remove from his
finger. As a result, he and his bandmates John, Paul and George are chased from
London to the Austrian Alps and the Bahamas by religious cult members, a mad
scientist and the London police.

In addition to starring the Beatles, 'Help!' has a witty script, a great cast
of British character actors and features 7 classic Beatles tracks, including:

-- 'Help!'
-- 'You're Going To Lose That Girl'
-- 'You've Got To Hide Your Love Away'
-- 'Ticket To Ride'
-- 'I Need You'
-- 'The Night Before'
-- 'Another Girl'

The DVD will be a 2-disc set. Disc 1 will feature the original film digitally
restored with a newly created 5.1 soundtrack, while Disc 2 contains an hour of
extra features, including:

-- The Beatles in Help! -- 30 minute documentary about the making of the
film with Richard Lester, the cast and crew. Includes exclusive behind
the scenes footage of The Beatles on set.
-- A Missing Scene -- Featuring Wendy Richard
-- The Restoration of Help! -- An in depth look at the restoration
process.
-- Memories of Help! -- The cast and crew reminisce
-- Theatrical Trailers -- 2 US trailers and 1 Spanish trailer.
-- 1965 US Radio Spots -- Hidden in disc menus.

There will be 2 editions of the DVD -- a standard digipack and a deluxe boxed
set that will contain a reproduction of Richard Lester's original annotated
script, 8 lobby cards and a poster, plus a 60-page book with rarely seen
photographs and production notes from the movie. Both the deluxe book and the
standard booklet feature an introduction by Richard Lester and an appreciation
by Martin Scorsese.

Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!

Deluxe Box Set for me!

Can't wait!!! When do we get to see cover art?

PS - VERY happy to see the inclusion of the "making of" which was previously only available as a separate release and long out-of-print like all the other films!

And I really hope the original MONO soundtrack is included.

It mentions a new 5.1 mix...

Good to know.

With all the other releases this fall I think this one will have to be left for the Christmas wish list, but it'll be very high on that list.

I don't think that's actually the cover art... looks more like a promotional photo that they've included for the time being.

Re: The Beatles' Help: 2007 2-Disc Re-Issue (Oct. 30)

Help! is one of my favorite movies, so I'm buying the deluxe box set.

I'm hoping it's 1.66:1 (the trailer makes it seem like it is) and anamorphic, and including the mono track. Too bad The Running Jumping Standing Still Film isn't included. Still, the documentaries plus the deluxe set's extras make this awesome. I'm eager to read the script since only AHDN is available in print form.

While MPI's DVD is good, it really didn't take advantage of how great the restoration looked (and sounded).

I'm a Beatles devotee but Help! the movie never did too much for me. But I'll pick up the deluxe edition since I'm a completist.

Me too. The original soundtrack always had a different version of the song "Help!"... it is what you might call the "single version", where the words go "AND now these days are gone..." (instead of "BUT now..."). None of the home video editions thus far have retained the orginal soundtrack that I am aware of.

The trailer appears to be 1.78:1, and I expect the DVD to be (wrongly) framed as such. I wish Criterion had done their original LD at 1.66:1 since their policy was to issue correct OAR's.

I got screwed by selling my old, original MPI disc of A HARD DAY'S NIGHT when the newest edition was announced. I won't make the same mistake with HELP! and will be making sure I have it ready in case the new disc is overmatted.

Re: The Beatles' Help: 2007 2-Disc Re-Issue (Oct. 30)

The trailer is 1.66:1.

Not the best quality, but I overlaid the DVD trailer over the MPI DVD image (from Google Video):

The new DVD has quite a lot of image on the sides that the MPI cropped off. Just looking at the two frames, it looks a lot like they're framing it correctly for 1.66:1 (per STMPE guidelines). I think MPI's AHDN cropped about the same amount off the sides, too. Both films were shown at 1.75:1 in 1964/1965, anyways.

Cover art is also shown here. Looks super sweet! I'm looking forward to the deluxe edition with bonus script reproduction.

Also, the trailer on the website is in stereo, and it sounds like a fresh remix of "Help!" I also noted that in the shot where George is saying "I didn't encourage that wink," John closes the car door and you hear it only on the right channel. It seems they must have some isolated sound elements to work with.

I've heard now that the incidental music for the film was discovered on 3-tack 35mm mag, so that will be able to be presented in 5.1 as well. They also found a "textless" version of the closing credits.

I can't wait for this and the box set looks amazing!!

I am willing to bet that we won't see the original sound mix though, which is incredibly frustrating. Too bad a studio like Criterion can't control every film property out there...

I finally saw it (from terrific dub of the laserdisc) and I can see why it's taking so long... it really needs a recut. It feels like a lot of random footage pieced together, with no real form to it. The rooftop concert is the only part that really works. At 80 minutes, it just feels like a quickie "best of" special. I'd love to see something that's more around 2 1/2 hours with better editing.

The Compleat Beatles can wait, too. The Anthology miniseries is riveting from start to finish, but TCB is just boring. The only parts I liked were the interviews with George Martin, but TBA has much more with him.

In that case, a music-only track would be nice. Maybe they could include Ken Thorne's score on the eventural Help! remastered CD. The Vol. 2 Capitol Albums set has the 1965 soundtrack which includes some of the music (A+ stereo quality, too). I love how Thorne basically arranged Beatles tunes to orchestral form (entirely From Me to You, A Hard Day's Night, You Can't Do That, and She's a Woman).

You can see the raw full opening credits "background" here without text or the cutaways: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rOrp2u-rSc

Although, they could use it to remove all the dirt and scratches, but they'd also have to superimpose the darts since the credits seem to be actually shot from a projection on a screen.

Sorry Patrick, the Flash trailer on The Beatles site comes in at around 1.85-1.90:1 for some strange reason. That's a best guess with my handy dandy tape measurer.

Can somebody please present this properly for a change?

The embedded trailer on the Beatles website is somewhat stretched out. The trailer as seen here:

...is certainly 1.66:1.

And watch that trailer carefully. When you see the guys' names come in from the left or right side of the image, you can tell that the movie is pillarboxed. You can see the names over the black.

The Beatles were apparently not happy with the released version, as the first cut ran about 3 1/2 hours (which they supervised with the director). Plenty of films were cut together in a certain way for release, but it doesn't mean it was the right way.
