Novice - Seeks Help from Experts!!

I'm looking to build up a Home Cinema from scratch. I am new to this and would greatly appreciate any help from those of you out there that know a great deal more than me and, perhaps, have the systems that I'm looking at or similar other systems that would be recommended.

AV AMP

I'm looking at one of the following amps:

1. ONKYO TX-SR605
2. SONY STR - DA1200ES

I've heard that both are good but the Onkyo has some problems with how hot it gets and some kind of popping sound.

I could extend the budget to perhaps a SONY STR - DA5200ES or YAMAHA RX - V1700 if there are significant benefits over the 2 listed above.

DVD PLAYER

I intend to use this for DVD and CD playback. In this case I'm looking at the DENON DVD - 1930. I've heard that the 1940 model is a better picture but has lost some of the qualities in music.

SPEAKERS

In this case I'm looking at 3 sets of speakers. These are:

1. KEF KHT3005 SE
2. B&W MT30
3. ARCAM Muso / Logo

The B&W speakers are about £600 more expensive, but if there are significant benefits, then again I could be convinced.

Thanks so much!!!

Re: Novice - Seeks Help from Experts!!

I own the Onky 605 and have no popping issues. That problem seems to have been on the early units and was also due to being enclosed with little ventilation.

Re: Novice - Seeks Help from Experts!!

I would definitely take the Yamaha over the Sony. Yamahas are typically better built, in my opinion, better suited for novices because they are much more user-friendly. I’ve never seen a Sony that had a straightforward, intuitive operation, and they usually have abysmal remotes to boot.

A couple of years ago I helped out some friends who were moving up from their 1970s stereo to home theater. They went with Yamaha, at my advice, and tell me all the time how much they enjoy it. Even being novices, they have had no problem operating the system.

Re: Novice - Seeks Help from Experts!!

Thanks! One of the guys in the stores told me to forget about Sony totally, but I wasn't sure becasue it won a product of the year award in 2006 - he also suggested that the Yamaha is a good amp. It's more expensive than the Onkyo so perhaps I need to arrange with them to hear how the two sound. Would the YAMAHA RX - V1700 bethe model you would recommend? Are there perhas some others that I should look at?

Thanks for your help - much appreciated!
