PDA and Mobile Phone Forum Testers Needed

Guys:

I have added a WAP plugin that should detect if you access the forum via your cellphone, PDA, etc. and it should automatically switch you to a simple font with no text.

For those of you that access the forum via your PDA, cellphone, etc. let me know if it works ok for you or not.

Thanks,
Parker

Re: PDA and Mobile Phone Forum Testers Needed

I'm using a Treo 755p and it seems to be loading the usual page under Blazer. Is there some different URL that should be coming up?

No, I have plenty of text :-) Did you mean no images?

Update -- I tried using www.mobile.hometheaterforum.com and it's still coming up like it always has.

Re: PDA and Mobile Phone Forum Testers Needed

I've given this a try, and I like the load speed since I'm on a Blackberry and it's still just using Edge for data. I do wish there was a button to go to "first new post" for each thread like there is on the more graphical web interface before the plug-in.

Re: PDA and Mobile Phone Forum Testers Needed

It is working fine on my iPhone. Unfortunately, I am not sure if I want it to. When I am surfing using AT&T's pathetically slow network, it is great. However, most of the time when I am using the web with my iPhone I am using a wireless b/g connection. In those times, I rather have access to the normal forum.

Would there be a way to give users an option for how they want the forum to appear? Standard or mobile version?

The link would be:

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf/...php?styleid=10

There is a pull down menu in the bottom tool bar that allows you to select what style you want to use. Just change it from mobile to default.

Re: PDA and Mobile Phone Forum Testers Needed

Reeaallly fast. Loads in a snap.

The only quibble would be to have the page links under the subject so you could jump to the last page.

OTOH, I can now actually read HTF on my Treo without going grey, so I'll take it.

Re: PDA and Mobile Phone Forum Testers Needed

Parker, the link has a format issue and doesn't work. The actual link contains elipses.

I also tried http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf/...php?styleid=10, but that link hasn't been working like it used to for a few days. It just loads the regular page.

Sorry I meant this. The style ID is 11 instead of 10.

Re: PDA and Mobile Phone Forum Testers Needed

My Opera Mini also works (BTW, if you have a Palm, Opera Mini is something like a gajillion times better than Blazer). The only thing is, when I use the rocker to jump to links, the highlighting doesn't work, so I'm not sure which link I'm on. So I have to use the touchscreen to jump to links. If you aren't familiar with the Treo, the rocker will move to the next link and highlight it, like a Blackberry, so you can browse with one hand.

This is purely a suggestion and not a complaint. This is miles better than it used to be.

Not sure of the rocker issue or how to resolve it. I didn't write the code.

Glad to hear it is working out ok otherwise.

Re: PDA and Mobile Phone Forum Testers Needed

Help, Parker. Turkey Knapp killed my WAP skin with his blunderbuss! (I don't believe that's what really happened but it's a convienent story.)

Since his arrival this year, my Blackjack II running Windows Mobile 6.1 only displays the forum in regular blue skin. I have tried switching from blue to PDA via the pull down menu without luck. I have cleared my internet history, temp internet files, cookies and rebooted the phone but I can no longer get the WAP/PDA/mobile skin. I have tried the link above to the style id 11 and even typed the url in as Home Theater Forum - Powered by Home Theater Forum and I keep coming back to the same blue skin with Turkey Knapp taunting me like the French from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Re: PDA and Mobile Phone Forum Testers Needed

Allow me to add that I am having this trouble with Inertnet Explorer on my Blackjack II and Blackberry browser on my Blackberry 8703e.

I just downloaded Opera Mini on the Blackjack II and chose the PDA skin and it works like it should.

Interesting...

Re: PDA and Mobile Phone Forum Testers Needed

Did it use to work in IE ok? I don't have a PDA or cell that I check the site with. I installed a new skin yesterday which should work just fine.
What issues are you having with IE?

Re: PDA and Mobile Phone Forum Testers Needed

Yes, it was previously working with IE on the BlackJack. This just started a few days ago. The issue is all graphics and tables display, which is why I used the WAP skin. I use AT&T's 3G network but I'm usually in an Edge network area when I'm mobile and the data transfer rate moves at sloth speed, bringing me to a screeching halt and making navigation very tedious.

As long as I can access the forum using a WAP/PDA skin with Opera mobile, I'm good because it's over twice as fast as IE and has a better, more stable user interface. I'm away from my phone presently so I'll check it tomorrow and see if I can get the PDA skin via IE. I'll repost my results.

Thanks.

Re: PDA and Mobile Phone Forum Testers Needed

You shouldn't be seeing any graphics in the WAP/PDA skin. That is why it surprised me that you were seeing our logo.

Re: PDA and Mobile Phone Forum Testers Needed

Parker, I have an idea as to what might have happened.

Week before last, my phone crashed and I was forced to reformat just so I could get it to boot up but I lost everything in it. Luckily, I had backed up my bookmarks, pics, etc... using activesync a few weeks prior. I did some research and discovered that this model phone has a known freezing/crashing problem with the pre-installed Windows Mobile 6.

I contacted AT&T who referred me to Samsung who adamantly denied such a problem exists and suggested for me to install Windows Mobile 6.1 to fix the problem. I did so and resynchronized my bookmarks, et al., and everything worked fine until the day of my post regarding the WAP skin not displaying.

I had a page opened from my last IE session of HTF and, instead of navigating to the main forum page, I refreshed so I could pick up in the same area I was in previously with posts updated. That's when the WAP skin stopped working. I say this because, I went back and checked the fine details of Windows Mobile 6.1 and found that it includes an updated version of IE mobile.

It is very possible the new version is, in some way, incompatible with the WAP skin. Perhaps it makes the forum think it's a desktop version rather than a mobile version. For what it's worth, the new IE is extremely slow and clunky and half the time gives some kind of page error when browsing. I will try re-synching my bookmarks and see if it changes my browser back to the WAP setting. If not, no big deal since I've began using Opera.

Gotta love Microsoft!

Clinton:

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds to me like you should just drop IE and use Opera. I can hardly wait for Mozilla to come out with Mobile Firefox.

Let me know if you have any other issues with the skin.

Re: PDA and Mobile Phone Forum Testers Needed

No problem Parker. I'm also eagerly awaiting Firefox mobile. I tried Minimo but it does not work on my phone. For the time being, Opera is the best out there for a mobile Windows platform.
