Newbie considering Onkyo TX SR674 7.1 - Comments or Suggestions?

I'm very new to home theater equipment. So far my home setup consists of a 32'' sony tv (non-HD) and a dvd player with component, optical, analog out. I want a system that will be good for surround sound movies and music. Specifically I want to enjoy BT's new Binary Universe release which has a 5.1 DTS mix on dvd.

My budget for Receiver and Speakers is $1k max. I have been reading reviews on different components and from what I've found the Onkyo TX SR674 7.1 receiver seems a good choice to start with. I have found it on Ebay new for around $500 shipped.

Can anyone comment on the quality of this reciever or Onkyo in general? Any suggestions on comparable receivers or speakers to go with this particular receiver, that will fit in my budget?

I am not familiar with that receiver personally but took a few minutes and looked at CNETs review of it and it seems pretty impressive for 500.00. It has HDMI and is suppose to be able to pass a 1080p signal. it appears that at least one owners review states that it cant but maybe it is just him or his equipment. There are 26 user reviews at CNET you can look at.

not to sure about a good 5.1 setup for 500 though, maybe someone else can help. If you can come up with a few hundred more, there are the Bic America Acoustech 6 Speaker Home Theater System for 799.00. I remember reading a review online where they were compared to some Klipsch speakers and did very well.
