Friday Night Lights edited?!?!

There appears to be a disclaimer written underneath the Universal logo on the back cover. Anyone make it out?

It looks like it says, "Music may differ from televised version."

Re: Friday Night Lights edited?!?!

My mom loves this show, and I guess I won't be buying it for her as a present this coming Hanukkah.

Jeez, don't they know enough to include home video in the licensing when they deal with music clearances? Even recent one-season wonders get DVD releases nowadays.

Re: Friday Night Lights edited?!?!

Has anyone seen a review for this set yet? I really enjoyed this show and if there are any edits or music changes, I would like to know before I go out and buy it. Thanks!!

Re: Friday Night Lights edited?!?!

Posted this in another thread, but the upcoming first-season Jericho set also has those two disclaimers (music and episodic-editing) near the bottom of the rear DVD cover:

Seems like this is becoming more and more of a trend in Hollywoodland...and it'd suck to see Friday Night Lights cut for some dumb reason, either.

Re: Friday Night Lights edited?!?!

The set is only $19.95 at Amazon. I guess it wouldn't break anyone's bank if it did have edits, and you didn't want it.

Re: Friday Night Lights edited?!?!

As I say on other threads, music replacement doesn't bother me about 75% of the time. However, if it comes at the cost of actually having to cut scenes from the show, then we're doomed. I do recall they cut some actual scenes from the Soap, and Dawsons' Creek dvds because they featured characters from the show actually singing popular songs. That is b.s.; that is the worst thing a dvd packager can do. I won't have it!

Re: Friday Night Lights edited?!?!

There was a soundtrack CD released, and here is the track listing:

1 "Devil Town" Tony Lucca
2 "Read My Mind" Killers
3 "I Turn My Camera On" Spoon
4 "Idlewild Blues" Outkast
5 "Everything I Do" Whiskeytown
6 "Rewind" Stereophonics
7 "Keep Us Together" Starsailor
8 "Big Big Kid" Jibbs
9 "So Divided" And You Will Know Us by the Trail of...
10 "Goodbye" Drive By Truckers
11 "Dead Man's Will" Iron & Wine, Calexico
12 "Storm" Jose Gonzalez
13 "I Remember" Chris Brokaw
14 "First Breath After Coma" Explosions In The Sky

I'm not sure if this is a complete list, because Amazon's (screwed up) track listing has some different songs, including one from Townes Van Zandt. I wonder if the fact that these songs made it to CD make them more likely to be on the DVDs. The only one I remember is "Devil Town," which was used very memorably in two episodes. I hope it makes it.

Since this release comes with a money back guarantee, I guess there's nothing to lose. If you don't like the missing songs, take it back.

Re: Friday Night Lights edited?!?!

I'm having this strong feeling that both second seasons for "Friday Night Lights" and "Jericho" (I know, it hasn't aired yet) will come to DVD with music replacements again. I'm going to e-mail CBS/Paramount in the next couple days and express my disappointment over Season 1 (and my desire for a music-cleared Season 2). But what is the best way of letting Universal know about FNL?

Any reviews yet on the second season and whether the original broadcast music is intact?

Re: Friday Night Lights edited?!?!

What is up with Universal replacing music on "Friday Night Lights"? I just got a look at the back cover art, and that exact same disclaimer is there. This is one of television's best dramas, and this is getting frustrating. This will be the second time I have to pass on this. I did e-mail them about Season 1, about a re-release with the original broadcast music (as well as Blu-ray), and they said that no plans have been announced for any other version of Season 1.

Universal may I suggest Blu-ray releases for Seasons 1 and 2 with the original music completely intact, please?

Re: Friday Night Lights edited?!?!

HOW MANY TIMES WILL WE REVISIT THE SAME ISSUE. IF YOU WANT TO GET A SHOW, EXACTLY AS IT AIRS, WITH ALL OF THE TREACLY POP SONGS INTACT, THEN YOU DVDR IT YOURSELF FROM THE BROADCAST. ONCE IT GOES TO DVD, THERE WILL BE MUSIC REPLACEMENTS. ALWAYS. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO RECORD THE SHOW BECAUSE OF ALL OF THE CRAP THEY PUT ON THE SCREEN NOWADAYS, WHICH I UNDERSTAND, THEN EXPECT TO GET THE SHOW IN SOME KIND OF EDITED FORM. THOSE ARE YOUR TWO CHOICES.

Re: Friday Night Lights edited?!?!

I have to add, I love FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, never miss an episode, yet I couldn't tell you what songs played over what scenes. It isn't an important part of the show.

It isn't like a period piece with classic songs where the scenes are built around (like say COLD CASE). They use small songs from small bands that most have never heard of.

Re: Friday Night Lights edited?!?!

Hank, if you don't want to hear about this issue, you don't have to respond to this thread. Yelling in caps is not going have people stop raising this issue. FNL is in a different situation here. Not only are they taking a hit on the price to bring in more viewers (which is great), but apparently the original music is suffering as a result. And to be fair, I was unable to record the first two seasons due to a move and a difficulty with my NBC affiliate. Since then, my local cable provider was bought out by Time Warner, and they are now offering DVRs in my area. I plan to record every episode on NBC when it airs next year. I was going to subscribe to DirecTV, but they don't carry my two Canadian affiliates so it's no longer an option. I'm still waiting for an HD DVR and HD broadcast feeds to come here though.

Jon, when I wrote to Universal, I also thanked them for supporting this series and for the money-back guarantee they offered for Season 1 last year. However, I do feel that music does play an important role in "Friday Night Lights" (so I disagree with you there, but I understand what you're saying). I don't understand why they're not securing all of the original music for this series on DVD.

And that was a great move by Universal. I watched the show BECAUSE it was only $20, and was hooked for the next season. I wonder if they will do it for this set.

You know, I don't think I've heard anything about a "money-back guarantee" for Season 2.

You're wrong. Music replacement happens but it does not happen anywhere near 'always' especially on current shows.

Re: Friday Night Lights edited?!?!

The publishers of songs, who sell the rights to music, have a right to sell
the music for what they think it is worth. It is their property. If producers don't want to pay the price asked, they can decide not to use the music in the original broadcast or do what they are doing, which is using it on the networks and then change it for DVDs. I wish if they are going to change the music they could do it without cutting the show. I wish they recorded the shows so that music, which they know they haven't licensed for home video, could be removed without editing dialogue. The shows as released on DVD are going to be the version that is remembered.

What do people think? If music can't be licensed for a DVD release, should it not be used at all, even in the network version?

Re: Friday Night Lights edited?!?!

I'd say not at all. There are thousands of songs out there, so why not use the ones you can get dual use out of? If the studios held to that, the publishers would start to give in or just not have their music exposed on national television.
