i just received conformation that the american hd dvd of zack snyder's dawn of the dead is still censored. the scene in question is when ana arrieves at the bus and a naked woman passes by on her car. the windshield has digital blood to cover the naked's woman breast.

i'm not going to buy this release and wait for the proper european or asian version.

Was the Unrated US DVD also censored in the same way? I don't recall the scene so I can't say.

Either way it's unfortunate but one digitally altered T&A shot isn't a deal breaker for me as long as the PQ is up to snuff.

Yes it was. Basically R1 was the only (="Unrated"-version inc. "blood on a car window") one, since other "Unrated" DVD-releases included "a shot of a topless zombie". Sure, this is not the end of the world, but I have to admit that "topless zombie"-shot is quite powerful. I definitely want it if other HD-releases include it..

I love the film. Even when it´s a "remake".

Why was it censored in the first place?

There's already a few topless shots, including a sex scene

Re: Dawn of the Dead (2004) HD DVD still censored!!!

I got the R3 DVD, which didn't have the blood obscuring the boobs. To be honest, although I can't imagine why anyone bothered to make the change for the R1, its such a non-event that it doesn't really matter to me.

What I want to hear is the PQ of the disc. I'm hoping its a winner, because this film has real rewatch value for me!

Re: Dawn of the Dead (2004) HD DVD still censored!!!

so covering a boob shot with blood that signifies violence and death...yep, us north americans have awesome priorities. hehe

I for one do not get the point of covering it up but I also do not get why someone would not buy a film because they don't get to see a boobie.

Whatever floats one's boat I guess.

You´re missing the point. If US-version is indeed censored, BUT the other HD-releases are not (e.g. Euro, Asia), then it´s going to be one of the non-US releases for me. With "Kung Fu Hustle" Blu-ray, I of course bought the uncensored version from Korea (cost roughly the same also) and not the US-version.

This (more or less) has been my policy with the SD DVDs also, so why it would change with HD?

Re: Dawn of the Dead (2004) HD DVD still censored!!!

In his commentary, I believe Zack Snyder mentions that the girl in the shot is a friend of his. I wonder if perhaps she REQUESTED that he alter the shot when she learned it was being re-instated for the DVD, and being her friend Zack complied? I can't think of any other reason for this mild bit of nudity to be blocked in such a way from an unrated version of a movie. Maybe the reason the shot was intact in other regions is simply because those discs had already gone to press at the time.

Re: Dawn of the Dead (2004) HD DVD still censored!!!

You guys do realize there is a lot more censored than just the shot of the topless zombie? I suppose that is the easiest way to identify cut/uncut, and perhaps that is what you are all referring to. But there are several extended gore shots in the unrated version.

Dave, we are talking about the "Unrated"-version, but that "Unrated"-version is censored in the US DVD (and also in the upcoming HD DVD, it seems).

US "Unrated"-version: "blood on a car window"
Other "Unrated"-versions: "topless zombie"

This is the ONLY difference between the US vs other "Unrated"-versions.

Then there´s "R-rated"-version, which is indeed "cut" even more.

I don't know if censored is the right word. Different would be a better choice. How or why do you censor an unrated movie?

Well, we can use different names, but I want those boobies in HD. At least if the "fully uncensored" (another name) is available in HD. If not, then it´ll be that US-release.

In this review you can find some screen caps (warning! Minor zombie nudity):

Most people get upset about this thing as a matter of upholding the integrety of the art. If its just about the boobs then watch some porn, lol.

I'm not a fan of this film and won't be buying it, but that's frustrating to hear all the same. It's not the biggest deal, really, but I can see where its fans want the most complete presentation possible.

Universal, please release Streets of Fire on Blu-ray.

What always bothered me about this when it was first discovered, no one ever asked the "uber cool" Snyder why he would allow it.
No buy for me, just a rental. I'll stick with my censored "uncensored" SD version.

if it's the same case on hd dvd as it was on sd dvd, then my friend you have to get the japanese release. that's because the japanese sd dvd had a superior picture quality over all european and north american releases.

i don't care for the boobies. they aren't that pretty. it's just a matter of principles. why should i buy a censored version of a movie that is available uncensored in the rest of world?

Unrated doesn't mean the movie is uncensored. It just means it hasn't been sumbitted to the MPAA for a rating. You could actually cut all the gore/nudity/language out of the movie and still call it "unrated".

Re: Dawn of the Dead (2004) HD DVD still censored!!!

While everyone is screaming "Damn you, Censors!", it may simply be a screw up in the cut. Maybe, they used the R-rated cut for the pre-credits sequence by mistake. It's not the first time a movie was assembled by someone who would say "Me make DVD, Me good" before receiving a cookie or a reward of fire.
I don't remember any real differences in the pre-credits sequence, but then again I'm used to the R1 dvd and only saw it in the theater once. Can anyone confirm this.

I'll keep my pre-order, but agree it's a silly thing to censor. And it does have a purpose besides - or maybe because of - titillation (sorry).
Edit: I don't recall if it was censored in the theater. If so, was it not censored theatrically outside the US?

Re: Dawn of the Dead (2004) HD DVD still censored!!!

Same here. I have it on pre-order. Now is this a case of studio censorship (not likely for a breif sequence of naked breasts, or did the Director decide to remove them. If it is the later, it isn't censorship.

The shot was completely removed from the theatrical R-rated cut.

On the "unrated" region 1 DVD, the shot is re-instated, but a big blotch of digital blood has been added to the windshield of the car so the actual nudity is obscured (think of the digital figures that were added to the R-rated EYES WIDE SHUT and you'll get an idea).

In all overseas versions of the "unrated director's cut", the shot DOES NOT have the added big blotch of blood, so you see the brief nudity unobscured.

Since the shot is so innocuous, my only guess is that somebody (maybe the actress herself since Zack says in the commentary that she was a friend of his) requested for personal reasons that the nudity be obscured, and the filmmakers acquiesced. I honestly doubt it has anything to do with "vile censorship" or anything like that since the shot is really quite mild, akin to the naked zombie seen in Romero's original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD all the way back in 1968.
