Bewitched Season 6??

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

Looking forward to seeing the entire season. It will almost be like seeing new episodes for the first time! I've ran across some people, who because they don't care for Dick Sargent, won't buy the remaining seasons. Their choice, but I think they are losing out because we still have some good episodes to come. As for I see it, I'll take a lousy BW episode over what passes for "intelligent" comedy these days!

Regarding the Amazon e-mail, I received it as well. I had already pre-ordered BW season 6 and I have the pre-order price guarantee--so I wonder if they will give me that extra 10% discount now?

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

I am looking forward to the Dick Sargent seasons to come. I DID like the Dick York years a little better. No offense to Dick Sargent, it's just that DY was the first and I was used to him, plus I really missed Marion Lorne's presence during those years. However, I DID like Sargent's zingers to Endora. And there WERE some genuinely funny episodes during those years. Also I think his chemistry with Elizabeth Montgomery was good. I will definitely be buying all the seasons to come.

I can not wait to buy Bewitched Season 6. Wonder if Season 7 will be out this year too? Or will it keep getting longer and longer? Does anyone know when I dream of Jeannie Season 5 will come out? I am guessing August

Mike,

I'm also waiting for "Jeannie" S5 to complete the set.

"When"....that's a question only "Sam" & "Jeannie" know With Sony, I just hope they don't abandon either series releases. Sony takes a beating on this Bd due to the many older shows they have vaulted away but I have to give them credit for releasing these 2 shows with the B/W - Color choices for the 1st 2 seasons of BW & S1 of Jeannie. I was surprised that both sets would get released that way.

Greg, great post. I'm also a DY fan more than the DS years but your post reminded me of the DS "zingers" with Endora Also, I agree that the chemistry was good with EM & DS . I'm definitely in for the 1st DS season.

Just wanted to remind everyone that today would've been Elizabeth Montgomery's 75th birthday. How awesome would it have been to have Season 6 released today?!

Sorry to take us back a couple of posts but i have been rewatching season 2 and have just reminded myself of how great Alice Pearce was. She is definately my favourite out of every single character in bewitched. I've not laughed so much at bewitched in ages as i have been rewatching season 2.

Oh, and Happy 75th too. Liz was such a talented and beatiful actress!

Thanks for the reminder David! I went and posted about it at the Sitcoms Online Bewitched Board.

And to Ross, Alice Pearce is a stitch! I love seeing her appear in Doris Day's flicks "Move Over Darling" and "The Glass Bottomed Boat" (in that one, she is with George Tobias, and they are just like the Kravitzes in it!!)

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

Happy Birthday to Liz...She passed away so young at 62 and you know there is an episode in Season 5, I think it's "Samantha Fights City Hall", actually mentions her bday saying "She has an appointment with City Hall April 15, 1997" she was telling Darrin this... I think that episode was from 1969, so sometimes I wonder what she thought it would be like 30 years from then (the 1960s)... the 1990s alot of great things like the internet, cell phones, and caller ID... I love watching Bewitched, a reminder of all the things we take for granted today that wasn't around back then... One episode in Season 5 was when Cousin Serena wanted to date a mortal and they used the computer dating service... that was a huge computer... I honestly do not believe the remake of the show will be successful no offense to anyone.

i agree about the remake although the british version could work if it's not too close to the original, so we can't really compare the two.

ok, I guess I'm not up to date--are they still thinking about doing a remake TV series? With mortals now very up to date in technology, a lot of the mystery of the magic would no longer hold a lot of appeal.
I knew that Japanese TV did a remake a few years ago.

I haven't heard anything a remake for television, but I don't think today's technology would diminish the appeal if they approach the story properly. To me, the best episodes were the early ones where the focus was on Samantha and Darrin's budding relationship. The magic was almost what Hitchcock called the "Maguffin" -- something that didn't much matter beyond putting the real story in motion. It was the fact that Samantha was different, average people wouldn't understand and the two had to keep her "secret" away from their everyday friends and family. Their deep love for one another conquered this major obstacle in their marriage. That's a timeless concept that technology doesn't change.

Once the show started focusing on the wacky characters popping in and out and stopped focusing on Samantha and Darrin's relationship, the series devolved from a unique (I can't really say sophisticated, but it came close) comedy series to the usual fantasy sitcom hijinks.

Another point -- it's not so much that technology has changed that makes the magic more obvious, but that we've grown older. Back in '64, we knew how the magic was accomplished. I even made some "Bewitched"-style home movies using the same sort stop camera trickery as a kid. But when you're younger, you have a greater ability to suspend disbelief. I hope kids today still have that ability.

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

Hi Rob (I remember you from the old days at alt.tv. I love lucy)!

I'm not referring to the special effects or the CGI now in use. I'm referring to the fact that mortals themselves have advanced in what they can do. So instant communication, etc is now better. I think Sam would comment on this like she did one time to Tabitha--"looks like the mortals are catching up to what we can do, Tabs!"

I think it would be interesting to see a take on the story done nowadays, but there was just something about the 1960s that was the perfect time to tell the love story of Samantha and Darrin. I would also say the first two seasons were sophisticated. By the third season and beyond, we start devolving into the "spell of the week" or what wacky relative is going to wreck havoc on Darrin's life.

Yes, I remember you too!

The 1960s were a perfect time for Bewitched because we were rebelling from the conformity of the late forties and early fifties and Bewitched captured some of that Zeitgeist with Sam and her non-conforming family.

Would Darrin go to such extreme lengths to hide Sam's non-conformity today? He'd come off as more of a boor today than he did then. And there were indeed times then that I wished Darrin would relax and just humor Endora a bit and stop being such a tight-***.

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

One of Dick York's pet peeves was that even he felt that Darrin yelled at Samantha too much. And yes, I think the growth of the characters stopped at a certain point. Esp during the Sargent era, where there was no attempt of either Darrin or Endora to move past the pettiness and learn to tolerate the other.

I love the episode when Tabitha was born because it gave Darrin and Endora a touching moment of tenderness together. They are both sobbing and Endora asks "Can you swim?" When Darrin replies, "Not a stroke!" she says "Well then we'll need these!" and zaps up a couple of handkerchieves for the both of them. The show needed many more moments like this to show that underneath all the sniping they ultimately accepted and respected each other. And there were none after the first few seasons.

Here is the DVD Talk review of Season 6. I am sure many fans will disagree with the review but I have to say for me the reviewer really expressed how I felt about the change in Durwoods and season 6 in general.

After reading the review, I found it difficult to argue with most of Paul's points but I'm glad he recommended a buy for the BW completist fans.

I haven't decided on completing this series, assuming that S7 & 8 see a release but I'm in for S6 for at least 1 DS season.

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

I'm pretty sure that a lot of european countries will continue to carry the remaining seasons and you should always have the original english tracks available on them, if you still want to get them on PAL system. Of course, if your DVD player and TV are o.k. with NTSC, then you will get a better film to video transfer with natural sound pitch with our region 1 DVD.

I think how Paul Mavis describes Dick Sargent also applies to the change in Mrs. Kravitz. Alice Pearce, as Mrs Kravitz was such a sweet busy body you really felt sorry that no one would believe her. Sandra Gould just came across as mean and vindictive. A prime example of this was the 4th season show where Aunt Clara brought a real space ship to earth. Mrs Kravitz was going to call the army and have everyone at Samantha's house taken away. The spacemen shot Mrs. Kravitz with a nice ray. If Alice was playing the role a nice ray would not be needed. Perhaps a calm ray would have had to be used.

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

After reading the review, I thought Sargent just said he was the original choice for Bewitched and Asher said York was the original choice... Maybe I mis read that somewhere. I actually liked Sargent and the final three seasons.. I just felt the show really didn't end properly and wish it would have had like a conclusion like the Stephens moving or Darrin getting a promotion or something. But, I hope Sony decides to release the remaining seasons of Bewitched. I really want season 7 when they go to Salem. That is one of my favourite seasons and I love Season 8 too!

It's funny that you would mention this episode today (well, yesterday now) as it was the 40th anniversary of the airing of that episode which happened to be the last Aunt Clara episode I don't really care for it as I think the dog-aliens are way too silly...it feels more like an 8th Season episode.

I do agree about your assessments of Alice Pearce and Sandra Gould. The episode I think that shows just how mean Mrs. Kravitz became is the Third Season episode "Soap Box Derby". Mrs. Kravitz does everything she can to get Samantha in trouble for supposedly helping Tommy to the point of having a little hearing at the derby. If it had been AP's Gladys, she would've kept her thoughts about Samantha to herself and Abner.

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

Awww "Sams Double Mother Trouble" wasn't so bad... David White actually directed that episode... It was quite humorous actually... I think each episode is very good... speaking of the Mrs. Kravitz's I think each one of them brought about 2 different persona's to the show... Alice's Gladys was more of a busy body, but nice and Sandra's was more mean and vindictive like she always wanted to call the police, air force, animal shelter etc... but both did such a great job with the role... Unfortunately we won't see Gladys after next Season, since they aren't in season 8

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

I would have to agree that "Sam's Double Mother Trouble" is the worst out of the sixth season and it really is too bad that David White was director.

But, that being said, the rest of the episodes are really great and even that episode has it's moments.
