Bewitched Season 6??

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

I would say that for the most part, Season Seven is very original. There are only about two episodes that I can think of that are direct remakes, but we'll save that for discussion when Season Seven gets closer to being released I will say that Season Seven is my favorite of the DS years.

David*P

Thanks for the info on the later BW seasons. I'm presently viewing S2 with all other releases on the shelf but have been "fence-riding" on getting S7 & 8 assuming their releases. I'm a DY fan over DS but I'm looking forward to the 1st DS season, thanks to your posts here.

I know I've asked this one before, but can you help me out with this one again? When in the series did Bernard Fox first appear as Dr Bombay? I recently viewed that S2 episode where he guested as that "witch professor" and loved that one. But I can't wait for that "Dr" to start appearing in the show. Those jokes that Dr Bombay tells when he first "pops in" and leaves, and Sam's & Darrin's reponses are classic I love that look that "Sam" shows after the joke "bombs"

The other question was, when was "Mrs Cravitz" replaced with the 2nd actress that played the part?

"Calling Dr Bombay, calling Dr Bombay.....Emergency, Emergency, come right away".

"Checkmate King Two Out"   Jeff Willis  "Combat! A Selmur Production"

My Bewitched companion book, written by Herbie J. Pilato, says that the first Dr. Bombay episode is from the season 3 no. 107 "There's Gold in Them Thar Pills"

Well, in episode 66 "Follow that Witch", from season 2, Mrs Cravitz is out of town and the character is replaced by some actress playing Mrs. Cravitz's sister. That situation continues in few following episodes. I think that is where Alice Pearce is no longer in the show. Then, Sandra Gould took over in season 3 episode 80: "Endora Moves in for a Spell"

Please, correct me if I'm wrong about the Cravitz character.

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

Jeff, I'm not David but I can answer your two questions.

Dr. Bombay made his first appearance in the last episode of Season 3, in the ep "There's Gold In Them Thar Pills." He didn't really become the jokester until later in S4 though. He was pretty serious in his initial appearance. Not quite the Bombay of the later seasons yet.

Sandra Gould took over as Mrs. Kravitz in Season 3 also. (As did Kasey Rogers as Louise Tate.)

Oops, I posted simultaneously with Martin. He is correct - in Season 2 they had Mary Grace Canfield (Ralph from Green Acres) play Harriet Kravitz, Abner's sister. Then Sandra Gould came aboard in S3.

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

Alice Pierce appeared in the last season 2 show where Mrs Kravitz's brother visits. This was shown after the shows with Abner's sister. It was told in flashback where Sam is pregnant and this show was probably filmed earlier and saved. However the last scene takes place in the present where Sam is not pregnant and Alice Pierce is in the scene. They watch her brother on TV and he loses his pants on air. I always wondered about this. If filmed earlier and saved when was the last scene filmed ?

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

Yes, all this info about Dr. Bombay (my favorite male character) and Mrs. Kravitz is correct.

According to the filming end date schedule, this episode "Prodigy" finished filming in June 1965 though it didn't air until almost a year later. I would confirm the actual date on bewitched.net, as that's where the filming schedules are located, but that website is down until Sunday moving servers.

You are both correct. According to Pilato's second edition of The Bewitched Comanion Book:Bewitched Forever, the author says that episode 74 "Prodigy" is indeed the last Alice Pearce episode and concludes the second year of the show.

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

Thanks, "BW gang" for the info! That's interesting about Bernard Fox & Dr Bombay. The memories that I had about his characer had been somewhat dimmed from time. I'd have guessed that Dr Bombay appeared earlier in the series. I have to wait longer for those corny jokes and classic comedy/timing responses from the other cast members

David, Dr Bombay's also one of my top players in the series. I also really liked Maurice Evans as Sam's Dad. And everyone remembers Paul Lynde as Uncle Arthur. I also thought "Aunt Clara" played that role to perfection.

Thanks, John for the "Louise Tate" reminder. I remembered that there were 2 actors for that part.

Why were these parts replaced by different performers? Did the original players pass away during the series or was it the producer's decision[s]?

Most clear memories of this series (before DVD) for me were the 2 B/W seasons with the original players. Probably for that reason, I preferred them in the roles.

Of course, we mentioned Alice Pearce passing away which is why her character was taken over by Sandra Gould. The first Louise Tate - Irene Vernon - decided to pursue a career in real estate plus I've heard she felt the role wasn't big enough.

I pretty much love all those episodes too though I would have to add in "Serena Steals the Show" and "Samantha's Secret is Discovered". I wish we had this set all ready!!

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

Now that Bewitched.net's Bewitched Filming Schedule is back up, we have access to the original filming schedule of BW so we can take a better look at when "Prodigy", the last appearance of Alice Pearce as Gladys Kravitz was filmed.

That episode has an end date of filming of June 24, 1965. It's a bit puzzling though as the beginning and the ending of the episode definitely look like they were filmed in 1966. I think it's listed this way, though, because the "meat" of the episode finished filming in '65 and for whatever reason was shelved. For reference purposes, it happened to finish filming between "Junior Executive" and "A Strange Little Visitor".

The last episode that Alice Pearce filmed was "Baby's First Paragraph" on 1/21/66. It is very sad watching that episode even without knowing this because you can see how tired and drawn she looks even though she still gives a stellar performance. She would pass away a little over a month and a half later on 3/3/66, which happens to be the airdate of "The Horse's Mouth". I often wonder if they interrupted that episode with news of her death.

Now to take this discussion back to Season 6....it's filming schedule is also quite interesting. The first episode DS filmed was "Samantha's Better Halves", the remake of the Season Two episode "Divided He Falls". It's end filming date was 3/31/69, a little over a month after DY's last episode filmed on 2/25/69, though as there were six Durwood-less episodes before it, I'm sure it BEGAN filming much earlier...but who knows? There were two more Season Five episodes to film after that, the last one being "Samantha's Shopping Free" which completed filming on 3/11/69 a mere 20 days before the end of filming of DS's first episode.

What is interesting is the fact that EM was pregnant with her last child during this time. She filmed her last episode while pregnant - "Samantha's Curious Cravings" - on 4/24/69 and gave birth to Rebecca Asher on June 17, 1969 (which also happened to be Erin Murphy's fifth birthday). What's interesting is that this was not the last episode to be filmed showing Samantha pregnant. That would be "Samantha's Caesar Salad" on 8/22/69 followed by "Naming Samantha's New Baby" on 8/22/69 and then "...And Something Makes Four" (Adam's birth episode) on 9/5/69. From there on out the episodes pretty much filmed in the order they were aired, but it is interesting to note which episodes EM was actually pregnant in and which she wasn't.

I do have to admit though, that the schedule merely gives the end date of filming so "Samantha's Caesar Salad" could very well have filmed it's majority before EM left on maternity leave. I wish we had information about ACTUAL filming dates.

Though I dislike the 4% faster speed because of the PAL format.

I wonder if Sony used the instrumental Bewitched theme for the other languages tracks on that DVD box set in UK? (French, German, Spanish and Italian)

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

David, you're right. It is difficult without all the actual filming dates, as the completion dates on that schedule can be post-production dates, i.e. final editing and scoring.

The tag to "Prodigy" was part of the original epsiode filmed in 1965. It would have been the same tag if Alice Pearce had not gotten sick and the episode not edited to be told in flashback. The way it is now, the audience assumes it's the present. It is so sad to track the deterioration of Alice in that season from the relatively healthy look she has in "Prodigy" through the gaunt look she has in "Baby's First Paragraph." Though her comic timing was impeccable right up to the end.

GLADYS (her voice fading across the front lawn as she runs after the reporters): "Hey, wait a minute. Wait till I tell you how these people fly in and out of windows..."

Also, I gotta say that I really disliked the change they made in Gladys' character after Alice left. She became far more of an antagonist, a la Dr. Bellows. Alice's Gladys, for all her doubts and fears, was still friends with the Stephenses and babysat Tabatha, etc. I loved that.

I mean, if I ran Oscar Mayer (for example) I'd jump at the chance to pay a little $ to restore the opening and then have it appear on several episodes, and voilĂ : a free commercial everytime someone watches the DVDs! But I guess that takes a little imagination to pitch that idea.

When you think that Chevy and Ford and Oscar Mayer and Quaker Oats and all the others are still in business and could use some cheap promotion, why not??

I mean, I've seen some restored, color-corrected openings from 16mm prints and they look great. It can't be that expensive to do it.

Thank you, John! Your points are exactly what I have been saying in other forums regarding the laziness of Sony in restoring the original openings.

Thank you so much, Jude86.

Needless to say, I shall be remaking this intro as soon as I'll have my hands on the DVD from Season 6. Can't wait to get a crisp picture to work with!

The one you see here was done with a VHS tape recording, so that explains why the look of it is not that sharp. I've been manipulating many parts of that opening in order to remove the Bewitched title and the rest of the cast in the smoke. A lot of this work was done frame by frame which took me about a month to complete.

Re: Bewitched Season 6??

I know it's redundant to say all of them, but really I am, because this is the first time that we've got a full season of episodes that essentially we've never seen the entirety to them because of broadcast TV editing them for commercials.

But were I to choose a few I would have to say "Daddy Comes for a Visit" and "Darrin the Warlock" are ones that I'm really looking forward to because it seems they always edit out my favorite line from one of them...it's when Maurice and Durwood are at the Chinese Restaurant and Maurice is reminding Durwood of the magic words to activate the watch and Durwood cannot remember the last word which Maurice tells him is "Lum". Durwood repeats it and one of the Chinese waiters interrupts and says, "Lum not here today." LOL!!! I've only seen that part maybe one time.

I'm also looking forward to "Serena Steals the Show". There is scene from that where Serena mentions turning Boyce & Hart into snakes that is never shown on broadcast TV.

I finally found my list of remake episodes and there are only eight from this season.

They are:

#172: "Samantha's Caesar Salad" which was derived from #147: "Samantha's French Pastry" from Season Five.

#177: "To Trick or Treat or Not to Trick or Treat" which is an amalgam of #7: "The Witches Are Out" and #43: "Trick or Treat".

#179: "Samantha's Secret Spell" has the same plot line as #39: "We're in for a Bad Spell".

#180: "Daddy Comes for a Visit" & #181: "Darrin the Warlock" have the same basic premise as #17: "A is for Aardvark" in so much as it's Durwood getting magical powers.

#185: "Samantha's Better Halves" comes from #68: "Divided He Falls".

#194: "The Generation Zap" is a remake of #8: "The Girl Reporter".

#196: "A Chance on Love" is a remake mixture of #3: "It Shouldn't Happen to a Dog" and #24: "Which Witch is Which?"

Now just because these storylines have been seen before does not mean that the episodes are any less entertaining. As a matter of fact they are quite entertaining and it's interesting to see how DS's Durwood reacts to the same situations that DY's did.
