Re: "The Fugitive: Season 1, Volume 1" -- A Personal Review

Re: Suzanne Pleshette
Actually it does look like her, the early 60s version of her. If you are a viewer of shows from that era, she shows up a great deal looking like that. Besides The Fugitive, she appears in Dr. Kildare, Channing, Ben Casey, One Step Beyond, Route 66, Hong Kong, Naked City, Riverboat, Adventures in Paradise and quite a few other shows that I've seen. So, yeah, I'm pretty accustomed to seeing her look like that.

Maybe I'm nuts, but Jack doesn't look THAT fat.

This episode is rather quaintly anachronistic in that "Davey" is singled out in "Fatso" as being grossly overweight and oafish when now over half of the people in the western hemisphere appears this way. In my day, fat kids, like the Davey character were teased mercilessly--but today, what's the big deal? And yes, I was prepared for a letdown for this particular outing of "The Fugitive" in light of an initial review of this segment and found myself placing it in the top five of the first 11 episodes I've viewed.

Jack Weston was very, very good in "Fatso" and his appearance really demonstrates a solid understanding by the casting director for getting the right actor for the job. His performance is reminiscent of the bafoonish character he played in the hour length Twilight Zone episode entitled "The Bard", but then his cherubic features and boyish voice lend themselves well to playing characters having a somewhat "arrested development".

Hurray!!! It's so nice to know I'm not the only one that really appreciated that episode and thought the initial online review was too dismissive. And you are spot on about Weston too. He did a great job in capturing the spirit of the Davey character and giving the audience someone to feel for. I'd also be very tempted to put this episode in the top five of the first 11. It was that good in my mind. And although some may have not gotten to it yet, I also thoroughly enjoyed "Terror at High Point" even though it has been somewhat belittled along the same lines as "Fatso." But it's another solid outing that I think most fans here will enjoy.

P.S. Let me remind folks here that there are some fans that have never seen these episodes at all and don't wish to be spoiled, so let's make use of the "SPOILER" tags whenever possible if talking about specifics in an episode. Just a friendly exhortation.

Yes, good idea Gary. I've gone back to my last post re. "Fatso" and added the spoiler tags in pertinent locations.

Thanks for that reminder.

Suzanne Pleshette Taken From Us At Age 70

IN MEMORIAM:

The great Suzanne Pleshette passed away on January 19th (although IMDb is reporting the 17th). She would have been 71 on January 31st.

Suzanne was (and always shall be) one of my very favorite actresses of all-time. She fits into this "Fugitive" thread due to her longtime friendship with David Janssen and her two excellent guest-star appearances on that TV series (the episodes "World's End" and "All The Scared Rabbits").

She was too young, at 70, to be taken from us. But her always-outstanding acting performances will live on forever in reruns and, especially, on DVD.

A sad day.

Re: "The Fugitive: Season 1, Volume 1" -- A Personal Review

She was one of my favorites as well. While I'm not much of a fan of short-haired brunettes, there was always something very appealing about her in her performances. One of a list of quite a few excellent actresses who for whatever reason were never given much of a chance on the big screen but who lit up television in tons of guest starring roles. Others who would fall into her category would be Susan Oliver, Lois Nettleton, Brooke Bundy, Diane Baker, Bethel Leslie, Joanne Linville and Carol Rossen. RIP, Suzanne.

Re: "The Fugitive: Season 1, Volume 1" -- A Personal Review

Ms. Pleshette regarded our Mr. Janssen as a gentleman who was always concerned about and for the people he worked with. Be it fellow actors, staff, crew...he always treated everyone with respect. "That was his nature," she disclosed in Ed Robertson's IMHO brilliantly-written book, The Fugutive Recaptured.

Ms. Pleshette also disclosed how much great comic timing Mr. Janssen actually had and was hoping that, during the series, he would do something along the lines of a Cary Grant a-la Arsenic and Old Lace, where The Fugitive would find himself on some kind of jeopardy because of an oddball character's--something Dr. Kimble came across often during the four years of running--crime.

However, Mr. Quinn would not have ANY of that, believing that to deviate in any kind of comedic form would detract from the somber tone of the series itself. So, sadly, it never happened.

Yes, the two of them were longtime friends who loved each other dearly and deeply. As a result of this connection--as well as the devotion each of them had to their craft--they were able to mesh so well together.

Ms. Pleshette was a wonderful embodiment of a witty, smart, savvy, foxy, confident AND sexy woman!!!!!! And, for that, to which I say, thank you very much, she will be dearly and deeply missed.

R.I.P., girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and BTW, David, I am already looking forward to, besides the rest of The Fugitive's freshman run, YOUR take on the other half. I am so very glad this has reappeared in the SD DVD TV Shows section.

I wanted to post this separately from my homage to Ms. Pleshette.
I shall attempt to go through the archives for those two episodes she was in and watch them soon!!!!!!

They always come in "threes", don't they? Incredible.

Suzanne, Lois, plus another talented actor, Allan Melvin.

January '08 is starting to remind me of June 2003 (a month when we lost at least half-a-dozen great actors and stars).

I had a difficult time placing a name to the face until I looked her up on IMDB.com. I suspected Ms. Nettleton may have appeared in the TZ episode "The Midnight Sun", and sure enough, that's her. The only tv/dvd episode I have where she made an appearance is in the "Naked City" episode "Debt of Honor". But I'll look forward to catching her performance in "The Fugitive" whenever S2, vol. 1 gets released.

Agree with you, Hank as far as Suzanne Pleshette's place among the small screen sirens. She fits in nicely in the company of Joanne Linville and Susan Oliver with her alluring and wispy charms. I was always captivated by Suzanne's unique throaty voice--it's one you can never mistake.

Re: "The Fugitive: Season 1, Volume 1" -- A Personal Review

Ms. Nettleton also appeared in the Season 4 episode "Death Is The Door Prize" with Mr. Ossie himself. Oh, the difference of color filming by the 1966-7 season: Ms. Nettleton's crystal blue eyes really stood out in that episode. I also enjoyed the chemistry she and Mr. Janassen had with one another as well. At 39 in 1966, she looked exceptionally beautiful.

I also loved Ms. Pleshette's baby blue eyes as well. I previously pulled up the All The Scared Rabbits episode from Season 3. Even on black and white film, Miss Suzanne's baby blue eyes came through sharp in that particular episode even more so than they did during World's End from Season 2.

In watching both episodes, the chemistry between Mr. Janssen and Ms. Pleshette was self-evident--particularly rabbits, where the truth and depth of their friendship seared through sharply and brightly during their two kissing scenes together. Miss Suzanne even remarked on how fine a kisser The Fuge was as well--shamelessly!

Re: "The Fugitive: Season 1, Volume 1" -- A Personal Review

Oh, wow. This sure is sad.

I really enjoyed his presence not only during the entire run of The Fugitive, but also on the Nu Ventures Home Videos of the 1990s as well, where he introduced particular episodes as presented on the VHS tapes themselves. His insight was rather keen coming from the direct perspective of an older gentleman which, sadly, we can NEVER have from Mr. Janassen himself.

And to think...he even had a cameo appearance in the 1993 Harrison Ford movie where he spots Ford's Kimble on the streets and starts running after him. Unfortunately, it was cut from the final product.

Farethewell, Lt. Gerrard. You had one 'well of a chase in this life.

R.I.P. Mr. Morse.

It's hard to imagine what THE FUGITIVE would have been like without Barry Morse, but thankfully we don't have to.

This is a screen shot of Barry Morse introducing an episode of THE FUGITIVE on the Nu-Ventures Video Tapes from the '80s:

A fugitive moves on, through anguished tunnels of time, down dim streets, into dark corners. And each new day offers fear and frustration, tastes of honey and hemlock. But if there is a hazard, there is also hope. - Closing narration to THE FUGITIVE, "Death Is The Door Prize".

Re: "The Fugitive: Season 1, Volume 1" -- A Personal Review

Glad I had a look in this thread. I have skimmed through the review at the start of this thread but it certainly looks thorough.

Were there any music edits to both volumes of Season 1 of The Fugitive? Why I ask is because a few days ago I saw a copy of Season 1: Volumes 1 & 2 on the shelf in my local HMV and Zavvi. I noticed on the back of the box the usual 'these episodes may be edited from their original network versions'. But it also had a 'music edits' warning as well.

Now I thought there weren't any music edits to the Season 1 episodes? Season 2 of course there are. But I didn't think there were any edits to Season 1.

The Season 1: Volumes 1 & 2 box is selling at a good price as well - £15 in Zavvi and £18 in HMV.

No music edits in the first season sets... which makes the edits in S2 even harder to understand.

EDIT: WRONG. They changed some source music in S1. Thanks, Carabimero for catching my error.

There are music edits in the first season sets, but they are all incidental music (bands, jukeboxes, etc.) I have re-edited my discs and restored the original music.

Sorry, Wave Crest. Carabimero and Ockeghem are right (and my brain must be slipping). I guess the major changes to S2 overshadowed the relatively minor changes in the S1 set for me.

However, that music warning seems to be standard on most Paramount releases whether there is or isn't changes.

I forgot to add that I was talking about the Region 2 set.

So the edits aren't in the same league as those made to the Region 1 sets for Season 2? They're songs changed (different versions).
