SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

I think the best thing to do is tell as many Stooge fans as you know that Volume One is available and everyone should pick up Volume Two as soon as they can. If the first week sales numbers for Volume Two can stay close to Volume One (which usually doesn't happen), Sony will at least see that they have a loyal fanbase to sell to.

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

I'd be thrilled if Vol. 2 does cover 1939 since that means "We Want Our Mummy" will be out.

It does seem to be up to folks on the web to get the word out that this new Volume is coming out. Anybody in NYC going to show up in front of the Today Show to hype it on a sign?

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

I don't believe this didn't sell well. If it didn't, then Sony should consider:

First: Before this release, Sony put out over 20 single disc DVDs of the Three Stooges. They were over-priced & way too short.

They couldn't seem to stop releasing those cruddy DVDs. They did it 20 + times!!!

But now they release a single decent set & it somehow it doesn't perform at least as well as the previous 20? Oh come on. Something is wrong with their thinking then.

Second: When Volume 1 was released, Sony didn't pull the old single disc sets. Instead, they flooded retail & Amazon with promotions for the old cruddy single discs. Why did they do this at the exact same time as they were trying to relaunch this new series?

Vol. 2 will cover 1937 - 1938, which encases 16 shorts. "Mummy" would be on Vol. 3.. I hope we make it that far too since that is one of only a few Curly's that is encompassed as part of the "Missing 60".

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

Yes...TBS used to show the Stooges shorts. I have a couple of VHS tapes of when they used to have 3-4 hours of Stooges shorts during the early morning hours. They appeared to be from VERY battered 16mm prints.

I have on tape one particular marathon where TBS ran a marathon of the Stooges' Western-themed shorts featuring titles from both the Curly and Shemp eras.

I certainly hope they get through the Shemp shorts at least!

the running time of 412 minutes would hint that it would cover 1939.

Very true. I think a lot of potential buyers felt the same way. This is what happens when a company wastes time with all those themed Stooges DVDs and colorized re-packagings.

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume One: Years 1-2

It looks like this set is going to have all 24 shorts from 1937 - 1939 (as the rumor goes, right now), including:

1. Grips, Grunts And Groans (1937)
2. Dizzy Doctors (1937)
3. 3 Dumb Clucks (1937)
4. Back To The Woods (1937)
5. Goofs And Saddles (1937)
6. Cash And Carry (1937)*
7. Playing The Ponies (1937)
8. The Sitter Downers (1937)
9. Termites Of 1938 (1938)
10. Wee Wee Monsieur (1938)
11. Tassels In The Air (1938)*
12. Flat Foot Stooges (1938)
13. Healthy, Wealthy And Dumb (1938)
14. Violent Is The Word For Curly (1938)
15. Three Missing Links (1938)
16. Mutts To You (1938)*
17. Three Little Sew And Sews (1939)*
18. We Want Our Mummy (1939)*
19. A Ducking They Did Go (1939)
20. Yes, We Have No Bonanza (1939)
21. Saved By The Belle (1939)*
22. Calling All Curs (1939)
23. Oily To Bed, Oily To Rise (1939)*
24. Three Sappy People (1939)*

*new to DVD

At first these new sets were said to total about 16 shorts a piece.. at this rate we'll get all 190 a lot faster, BUT.. of course.. that's if Sony would decide to press on with Vol. 3.

And yes, TBS was the Stooges national syndicate in the 80s and early 90s until the Family Channel began to butcher them. At that point, when TFC was bought out by Fox, AMC then had the rights.. and when their programming view changed Viacom (through Spike TV) now holds the reigns.

Well, even still when stores like Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, and Circuit City don't even CARRY the set to begin with (the only place here in California I could locate a copy at was at Frys).. the only way to get this is online.. and with no advertising, even the most casual Stooges fan wouldn't know about this unless they were regular visitors of various DVD sites or Forums like this.

Even though its 24 shorts this time , they should still be able to fit them on 2 single sided discs easily.

They sure better get to Vol 3!! That would cover some of their best shorts, including A Plumbing We Will Go, You Natzy Spy and others.

Also, to clarify my previous statement, I hope they get through the Shemp shorts, but I'll buy all of the ones beyond him too...

Besides Mummy, Three Little Sew And Sews is another of the "missing 60", along with Flat Foot Stooges, but I guess Flat Foot's been released already on DVD.

Wish they would just throw out the old sets & quit confusing the customers.

As a very unscientific study, I went into our FYE superstore. They had zero copies of this new set everyone likes. But they had 26 DIFFERENT "junk" collections, colorized Sony sets, and a few PD sets.

Circuit Ditzy also had zero copies of the new set but 11 copies of various "junk" Stooges.

Sony, please bring on the rest of the great 2-year box sets. I'll buy 2 of each if it will help.

The stores, where I live, are like that too. There are no copies of the official Stooge sets to be found, but the sets that are put out by St. Claire Entertainment and the one that comes in a talking tin can are around most everywhere.

Direct from the "What the Hell" department...

These classic films from Volume 1 are now available for download on iTunes. That would normally be a good thing, but they apparently come "complete" with unrequested introductions, animations, and .... , hang on to your hats, COMMERCIALS!

Just what the fans have been clamoring for: added commercials.

What the %$&#(&*#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After releasing over 20+ Three Stooges DVDs, Sony has yet to release 1 single bonus feature. Yet somehow they have managed to irritate their main consumer, to add commercials, to colorize film classics and to over price single DVD collections. What is next????

No, episodes are not free. Volume 1 is for sale at $1.99 per film or $19.99 for the entire Volume 1.

99.99% of the movies, music or games that are available for legal purchase on iTunes or Apple TV are not free.

I know this isn't a DVD, but since there has been much discussion about Sony's unusual handling & packaging of the Three Stooges films including DVD, I thought it might be of interest to other Stooge fans.

Downloading is now a very attractive & viable distribution option for studios. You can hate it & laugh at if you want. But many films may soon only have a download option (not everything will be for sale on DVD). If they are full of commercials, are we really interested in that purchase option?

Not me. I'll only purchase Blu-Ray, DVDs or downloads without commercials interrupting the feature film.

These appear to be the same ones I've seen on Comcast on Demand, with commercials that are simply "trivia" or fake Stooge "commercials."

That is BS then. If I watch an episode of The Office on NBC.com, it's free so I can make the 'trade' of seeing something for free with commercials but if I spend money, I don't think there should be non-skippable commercials.

I will never download anything like this to watch with or without commercials. If they don't come out with a Vol 3, Vol 4 ect, on dvd then I will never see the restored episodes.

Especially when the grid is used to download movies instead of the internet.

"The Internet could soon be made obsolete. The scientists who pioneered it have now built a lightning-fast replacement capable of downloading entire feature films within seconds.
Although the grid itself is unlikely to be directly available to domestic internet users, many telecoms providers and businesses are already introducing its pioneering technologies. One of the most potent is so-called dynamic switching, which creates a dedicated channel for internet users trying to download large volumes of data such as films. In theory this would give a standard desktop computer the ability to download a movie in five seconds rather than the current three hours or so."

My copy came early today, from a certain online retailer.Ive only had time to watch the first short, grips grunts and groans. The picture quality on that short, has the same nice restoration that the volume one shorts had.So im assuming all the shorts will be looking good.I hate to complain , but can we see a few bonus features on volume 3 finally??

We finished the nineteen episodes from vol. 1 recently. I've added vol. 2 to my wishlist, and will be picking it up soon.

The other night, we watched Violent Is the Word For Curly--in color. Our children wanted to see it this way. As much as I prefer the original b&w, I found that as far as colorized films go, this one wasn't too bad. We watched 'Swinging the Alphabet' quite a few times!

You know I prefer original black and white , but it would be nice as a curiousity factor, to see some of these in color.I know that there were some stooges dvd releases in color, but I refuse to pay for something colorized. If they had 2 or 3 stooge shorts on volume 2, with the option to see it in both color and black and white it would be nice.
