Hi-

I am interested in purchasing a DVL 91 laser disc/DVD player. Anyone out there selling one and interested in talking with me?

I have quite a few Laser Disc's that have been neglected, and I would like to find a good player for them.

Also interested in anyone's insight on this unit.

Thanks!

Re: Looking for a Pioneer Elite DVL 91 Unit

Hello Jack,

Sorry for not noticing your thread sooner friend,

I actually own 2 of these machines and they are brand new, but unfortunately i will not be parting with them ''sorry''

I live in the UK and started the AV hobby way back in April of 1998 and at that time i noticed one of these players in a Laserdisc shop.

I became hocked on the Pioneer ELITE brand from that day onwards.

The DVL 91's are reliable players and the picture quality and electronics are on par with the CLD 79, which by all accounts that i have read was a good player.

The player that came before the CLD 91 was the CLD 90 and this was lacking the same quality and features.

Look on ebay Jack as Century Hi Fi has one for sale ''bit pricy though for a US buyer'' but not so bad for us in the UK to import his price is $875.
For me to purchase this player it would cost aprox £460 and the shipping would be about £100+

I would seriously go for a DVL-91 and just use this as a Laserdisc player only, less ware and tear on the player.

I am in the process of purchasing an HLD X9 from a friend in the UK.
Then in September i shall be paying for a brand New Pioneer Elite CLD 97 from the USA. (i am a Laserdisc Fanatic and a serious collector.) I must be Mad!!

What do you think Jack? ''maybe i need help''

I do purchase DVD's and enjoy them, but prefere the handling of Laserdisc's and the cover art, also the sound of the players is a buzz for me.

Pioneer have said that they will be servicing Laserdisc players for some time to come, so plenty of spare parts!

Jack i am a regular person with a regular job who just happens to get a kick out of the Laserdisc format.

Look forward to hearing from you and hope that what i have explained helps in some way in your purchase of a laserdisc player.

Let me know how you get on.

Genuine and honest regards

Mark

Mark-
Thanks for your kind reply. I am still looking and hope to find one at a reasonable price. I saw the one on Ebay, but really believe I can find one at least a few hundred dollars cheaper, if not better.

I have approximately 150 laser discs that have been languishing in a cabinet receiving no use. I have a Pioneer CLD-59 that I take out of the closet and hook up to my DVR from time to time when I get an itch to watch one of my LD's. I believe if I got a combo player and had it hooked directly into my Home Theater I would be more inclined to use the LD format. It would be so much more convenient.

In your opinion, do you believe the video and audio output is significantly better with this player? Do I need to be aware of any special set up instructions?

I have traded in a TV for a Runco DLP video projector. My screen is approximately 110" . I am curious how this player will look on the "Big Screen".

Let me know what you think. I too am just a normal person who happens to want a high quality viewing experience when I view movies.

Re: Looking for a Pioneer Elite DVL 91 Unit

Hi Jack,

I have a Marantz LV-510 LD player for sale in my "Various AV Gear" thread here. Not quite on the level of the 91 but still a very respectable machine, especially in the audio department. It'd also make a good backup player for the money. If this post is too off topic, feel free to delete; just passing on to any of the remaining LDers out there.

Hello Jack,

Good to read your thread friend.

The setup on the player is very simple and the only thing you may need to worry about is if your screen is 50inch or more.

If this is the case then maybe a video processor will help, but that depends on what setup you already have.

The time here now is 07:46 and i am about to go home from work.
I shall reply to your message this evening when i return at 18:30

Genuinely look forward to hearing from you friend.

Regards

Mark

Re: Looking for a Pioneer Elite DVL 91 Unit

Hello Jack,

Time now in the UK is 19:06 and started work at 18:05.

How has your day been?

Jack have you tried Laserdisc Service on the web? as this gentleman is very reasonable on fully refurbished players (and i mean from top to bottom service.) his name is Duncan Sales@laserdiscservice.com

Also Jack try Pioneer US service centres on the pioneer site as they may have a service centre not far from yourself, plus they may know someone who has a DVL 91 for sale.

Duncan' is based in the US give him a try and see what he has to offer.

Look forward to hearing from yourself friend.

Genuine regards

Re: Looking for a Pioneer Elite DVL 91 Unit

Hey Mark-

Sorry to hear you have to work all night- Hopefully some of the money earned can go towards that HLD X-9! I've read about them. Expensive machines. Wouldn't mind stumbling over one of those myself!

I've been in touch with Duncan, and he is a real possibility for help! He has 2 we are talking about, so progress is being made.

My main concern is making sure that the unit can be used in my current set-up. My Home theater has been installed by a local service, and I think they are going to have to come out to make sure this get's done right. I'm a little skittish about disconnecting anything or trying to install something new.

You mentioned a Video processor. What does that do? Is it like a line doubler?

Well- Hope all is well for you as you go through your day.

Hiya Jack,

Do not be sorry, as i enjoy working nights (i enjoy the peace and quiet away from the politics.)

I love carrying out external patrols of the grounds, a time for reflection and meditation whilst walking.

The extra money is going directly on the HLD X9.
The friend who i am purchasing from, lives about 370 miles away and was good enough to reserve this player for about 6 months for me.

The asking price is £1.500 + about 6 laserdisc titles, an analogue to digital converter / refresh box which takes away most of the grain when displayed on a large screen.

So far i have paid £600 and this Friday-24 i should be placing another £300.

I have wanted to own one of these ever since i found out about them in 2001

Answer to your question about Line scaler is : yes! Manufacturers such as iSCAN / LUMAGEN / CHRISTALLIO are what i am looking at.

iSCAN sells for about £1.480 in the UK and should be good enough for what i need, and is upgradable, with SDi imput which i will need for the Analogue to digital converter box.

I when i am disconecting cables i look at it in a positive way and a good time to clean all the contact's, but i understand what you mean about being Skittish!

Time here now is 21:36

Thank you for you concern about my day Jack.

It's genuinely a pleasure to corespond with yourself friend.

Hope you are well and taking good care of yourself ''eating and sleeping well''

look forward to hearing from you, with all sincerity and honesty.

Kindest regards

Mark

Re: Looking for a Pioneer Elite DVL 91 Unit

Sorry Jack,

I forgot to mention about Duncan! i am glad you have communicated with him as he comes across as being very conscientious about his servicing of Laserdisc Players.

I have been trying to purchase an AC-3 upgrade kit for a CLD 97 for myself but have had no reply.

I wonder if you can mention this to Duncan the next time you speak or correspond with him, as i would be grateful!

Please let me know if this is ok with you!

Genuine regards

Re: Looking for a Pioneer Elite DVL 91 Unit

Thanks for your insight Mark.

I wonder how much in American dollars the X-9 you are purchasing translates to. I am clueless to pounds versus dollars, though my understanding is that the American dollar is not holding up well overseas.

I'll have to ask my video technician tomorrow about a video processor tomorrow. He should know if I need to get one.

Duncan seems very helpful. He is holding a DLV 91 for me while I do my research at this end. It may prove to be something I can't hook into my system, though that would surprise me. I will try to mention you to Duncan next time I email him, but I'm not sure when that will be.

Do you suppose if I am able to use this machine that I will see a marked improvement on the video quality I currently have?

Interested to find out.

Re: Looking for a Pioneer Elite DVL 91 Unit

Hello Jack,

Sorry for the late reply sir, as i have just returned from patrol which took 2 hours aprox.

Reference US-dollar to the UK-pound the current rate is roughly hovering between $1.98 & $2.03 to the £1 Uk pound sterling.

Basically the difference that you should notice is that the blacks will be slightly better on the DVL 91 and also the sound should be better as the Burr Brown analogue converters are, or should be better than the CLD 79 of which this Laserdisc player is based on.

Very wise of you to do your home work on this player and so on before you go ahead and purchase! !! i am impressed !!

Jack if you need any LP outer protective resealable sleeves then contact Nicholas Santini in Japan nsa@f04.itscom.net he is totally trust worthy.

Nicholas has been selling Laserdisc's to me for about 17months now and cannot recomend him ''high enough'' to all buyers of laserdisc hardware and software.
His packaging is top quality and he is a proffessional seller.
''do not worry as i am not getting comission for saying this to you''

His service is that good ! no kidding

100 outer sleeves can be shipped from him to you for about $50 aprox.

When i have finally paid for the HLD X9 and the analogue to digital box, i will let you know the brand so that we can look it up on the web.
Aparently this box on it's own cost's £500.

By the way! Duncan said in his emails and on his web site that when servicing Laserdisc players, he matches and in a lot of cases betters the factory picture setting's. (that should be interesting to see.)

Time here now is 02:42 and at 03:10 i shall be going on an external patrol.

I shall reply to any messages when i return!

I have saved your name to my buddy list and hope you do not mind?

Look forward to hearing from you friend.

Genuine and sincere regards

Mark

It comes with the original remote and manuals, etc.

Let me know if you are interested and we can go from there.

Did you find a DVL-91? If not, I may be selling mine. I am looking to buy a HLD-x9. Mine has a few scratches but works perfectly. I even had it in the shop recently for a cleaning, adjustment and to check if it needed anything.
