The Disclaimer
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

"LP" in the RoundUp table means a store’s Sunday flyer says "Low Price". That means I could not locate a definite price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, as always, Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 8-21-2007

Thanks, gents!

I will be picking up Ugly Betty, but may wait for a better deal to come along (like, say, buy it in tandem with Grey's Anatomy if someone has one of those buy 2 and get $10 off promotions like they usually do.) Otherwise, I may NetFlix She to see what that is all about. This is one of those films I have been aware of my entire life, but have never seen. Ray Harryhausen references his involvement in the new colorization of She several times in the supplements of his recent 20 Million Miles to Earth DVD, so, now I am curious.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 8-21-2007

Just picked up the "Serenity" Collector's Edition -- what an improvement on the packaging. The free comic book that Best Buy is advertising is a reduced version of the first of the three comics that came out before the movie (or the first third of the trade paperback), with a new cover. The comic is packaged with the box, shrinkwrapped onto the back of it. Kinda a drag that the trim size is slightly too tall to allow it to be stored with the discs inside the box, but that's a pretty minor nitpick.

Also there seems to be what may be an unadvertised sale at Best Buy on a bunch of TV titles at $24.99 each. I didn't get a full list, but it was a lot of Fox and Warners stuff. I picked up "Picket Fences" S1 and a friend got "The Dresden Files," though we had to turn the store upside down to find it. (If you have trouble finding it in your store, try under the "Drama" section. Er, what?) I know "Boston Legal" S1 & 2 were also on the list.

Thanks again, Mary (for the list)!

Andrea: I don't know what it is about Serenity. After reading SOOOOOOO much on this forum about this flick, I picked up a copy for my son and I to watch and it is the only movie I can recall where we both got so restless and bored we turned it off and never got back to it. I feel...somehow...inadequate! We actually found it hard to follow what was going on. I actually did walk out of the theater in 1976 during the intermission of King Kong never to return!

Well, you don't *need* to -- "Serenity" works pretty well, I think, as a standalone film. I may not be the best judge of that, since I did see the series first, but I was kinda on the lookout when I saw the movie the first time for anything that might throw a newbie, references to things that happened in the series that they wouldn't know anything about, and I think Whedon was really careful to avoid doing that.

It does clip along at a pretty brisk pace, and throws a lot of backstory, character introduction, etc. at you in the first 10 minutes. I'm sure that having some previous familiarity with the characters would help. And the unusual language throws a lot of people, particularly the occasional Chinese phrase or faux curse word. Watching some episodes (in the order that they're on the DVDs, not broadcast order) with the subtitles turned on can help there. I'd suggest watching at least the pilot before you give the movie another try.

At the end of the day, it's not everybody's cup of tea. It clicks with some people, and with some it doesn't. But as you've no doubt sussed by now, many of us who like it REALLY like it....

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Weekly Round-Up.

Well...count me as a newbie who wasn't "getting it"! And, oh yeah, youse guys are definitely nuts about this movie...which was what prompted me to make the blind buy. Maybe I'll give it another try some time...

In the meantime...I'll go back to..."Denny Crane"!

Firefly grew on me, but I was primed for some sort of episodic Sci-Fi after the fall of Farscape and Enterprise. I watched a couple episodes on HDN and caught Serenity on sale at Target. It helped having seen a few shows but the movie does do a good job helping you figure things out.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 8-21-2007

And that was at the old Hellman's theater in Albany for me, Ric...before they split it into half...before they then later demolished it. One of the highlights of my life was taking my mother to a screening of That's Entertainment at that theater! I was just 15 in '74 (for That's Entertainment). We had a great time. What a huge theater! Curtain in front of the screen!

Big shopping news from me. Tonight I went to my local Best Buy after Mary's tip about the TV shows at $24.99. Picked up a Boston Legal: Season 2...but there was absolutely NO indication it was on any sale. It was, in fact, marked at $48.99! I took it to the register and had them scan it and it rang up at $24.99! I never would have known. Thanks again, Mary!

I then went to BJs Wholesale Club where I found RoboCop for $14.99! That was the extent of my purchases tonight. But I was also surprised to see Boston Legal: Season 1 at BJs for just $17.99. That's a darn good deal. They also had...and I'm going to have to run over and resurrect the Survivor thread over in the TV section...each season of Survivor (although only one copy of each) for just $14.99! Crazy!

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!
