All I know is that yesterday I was finally starting to look at which player I was going to get, and even started to look at newer displays to go with it. Today I face the very real possibility that I'll never purchase an HD title at all.

Everyone saying, "Well, Sony did the same thing..." miss the point IMHO.
Sony MAKES and sells players AND discs.
What exactly does MS have to do with HDdvd..?
Sony wants BD to win to make $ on their products.
MS wants NOBODY to win so they can make $ with eventual downloads that Gates has publicly said will be the future.

And "neither" is just status quo, sad to say.

Of course, the flip side is that if HD DVD has actually secured an agreement for everything Paramount releases to be day-and-date (minus Spielberg)... That could be huge, too, especially if it includes catalog titles, TV, and stuff from the specialty sub-imprints like Paramount Classics and Go Fish. That could be a huge deal.

Sadly, this is probably true. People are now more confused than ever.

Where's the actual proof that MS paid them? Toshiba did last I checked. It's quite a reach to assume MS paid for this.

Also I think Bill's article is quite offbase as both sides are pulling these same punches. If Toshiba/HD DVD is guilty of anti-competitive actions, Sony is more than guilty of it as well.

Gee, what a shocker that those complaining in here are either exclusive bluray supporters or prefer the format. So let me get this logic straight...ok for companies to be exclusive on bluray but not ok if a dual format company decides to support hd dvd? GREAT UNBIASED LOGIC.

Maybe this will cause a lot of hd dvd sales and fox and disney will go dual format...I guess though that can't happen. All it is with people is whatever format they chose/prefer should be the format that wins. Gotcha.

FWIW I am a dual format owner, do not prefer either format and I find being format exclusive to be lame since it does not give consumers a real choice if they want the movies of that studio.

It is just amusing to me that if Paramount flipped this to be blu ray exclusive that it'd prolly be praised by people here...so what if all studios excluding Sony go hd dvd exclusive...will people here praise the end of the format war or will they be bitter because they initially bought into blu ray?

I love human bias. It kills me.

Anyway, this is good news for toshiba and the hd dvd only owners, bad news for blu ray only owners and it is TBD to see what this does to those on the sidelines.

Prove to me that Toshiba paid. Can't? Why do I need to prove anything to you in that case?

It's common industry knowlege that MS has been assisting Toshiba financially in this game, the only question has been to what extent. In the eyes of most industry onlookers right now, the deal with Paramount/Dreamworks just answered that question (either that or Toshiba is digging really deep into their pockets and risking an awful lot to keep HD DVD afloat a little while longer).

That's because many of us feel that one format is the best chance for long-term HD disc success. Blu-ray has a real chance to be that one-format solution. With both formats fighting along like this, it just increases the odds that neither will succeed in the long-term.

Who (besides Bill Hunt) said anything about Micrsoft? My sources say they didn't pay anything, they heard rumors of a deal in the works for catalog titles, but found out all the specifics through the press release today just like we did.

I know next to nothing about anti-trust laws and the like, but I fail to see how this is any different from professional sports. Paramount can be seen as a free agent that got lured over by big bucks, not unlike star players. Of course, if Paramount was already under some sort of binding contract with BD, I can see the problem.

You don't need to but your statement holds little weight. It doesn't really matter much like Bill Hunt's trash journalistic article means little. It really sounds like a bitter fanboy article.

Being a business, anti trust laws might come into place here but both sides would be guilty. To think it's a one sided affair with only one side being guilty is shortsighted.

Why is this so hard to understand? HD-DVD, even after this news, has a long long ways to go before it will ever claim that, and it's just unrealistic to think it will ever happen.

I got an email from Amazon that said my Blu-ray of Face/Off was pushed to November, and did i still want it. I kept the order, but now i guess it will be gone. I wont spend that kind of money shipping from another region.
I buy plenty of standard DVDs, because i dont want to pay 20 plus dollars for Blu-ray, or HD DVD for that matter. I buy so-so DVDs when i see them for 5 to 10 dollars, and thats all the time.
I have a 50" Plasma, and i can see the difference of my Blu-ray discs to regular DVD. But i dont need to live and breath HD.
P.S. Paramount could have kissed my ass before id rebuy Star Trek in combo HD for $200 a season anyway!

Certainly not. We're not talking about a large market share to be fighting over so one move swings things around quickly. One title selling 15,000 copies vaults it into the top 10 easily. That's peanuts for DVD sales.

I don't get the anti-trust stuff either, Brett.

I picked Blu-ray for three reasons: 1) It's easier to test from a QA standpoint (the industry I'm in), and 2) it had more studio support, and 3) Sony has an interest in continuing physical media, while Microsoft wants it to die.

What this move did to piss me off is make #1 possibly harder, #2 less true, and #3 much more of a reality in the future.

I honestly don't care if Disney or Fox - or hell, even Sony - goes format neutral. Great, go ahead. Just don't DROP a format you're already supporting. I never cared if Universal kept HD-DVD for the next 12 years - I just wanted them to go neutral. Paramount actually dropping a format they had been fully supporting - and the format that sells 2x as well, no less - just pisses me off, both as a worker in the industry and a consumer.

Let me start by saying I have both formats.

The Dreamworks/Paramaount HD-DVD deal sucks, ONLY for the reason that it looked like Blu-ray was really making some progress towards "winning" and I want this stupid format war crap over.

I still think it's too little too late.

Blu-ray will prevail.

Yes, but Lucas (via his corporation, Lucasfilm) owns the actual rights to the Indy films. He decides when and how those films arrive on home video. Same thing with Star Wars.

Pretty much, yep.

Although I guess there is the ever-so-slight possibility that they see Indy IV as a perfect tie-in to release the original three on an HD format. I doubt it, though--we're already getting the tv series this fall, and I'm guessing they'd release another version of the SD-DVD box (or release the films separately) in the spring to tie in with the new film.

The Federal government no longer cares about vertical integration. They don't mind when a company manipulates its own related companies.

But they still mind when a company tries to manipulate a wholly different company!

I agree on both counts. I also wanted Universal to go "neutral" (not "die"). Sure, it would´ve probably killed the "format war" but on the other hand the whole "HD concept" would´ve gotten a better change to survive. Now - sadly for the average consumer, format war is again in high speed.

Paramount dropping Blu-ray is the decision based on short term greed. They got the money. It doesn´t help "HD" in the long run.

Btw. Does this Spielberg-deal mean all the films that he directed for Paramount/ DreamWorks or also some that he only produced etc?

I believe what Adam Gregorich said (post #162). Microsoft didn't pay Paramount (or Dreamworks) anything.
I think the original deal with Sony came to an end and they evaluated their interests, just like a commercial company should do.

The alleged MS-deal is an invention of Bill Hunt (or someone who told him). I happen to know that Adam has some "ears" inside "the industry" too, so I honestly don't think he makes that up.

Well Cees I strongly disagree with your position, Disney as neutral ? Fox announcing neutral position ? So HD DVD will add region coding for Disney ? or better protection for FOX ? Seems like those news make you happy ???? Is that right ? So it is clear now that you WANT BOTH FORMATs DEAD ?
