Scott: You don't suppose that would be from the "nighttime" (or syndicated) version of TPiR that James used to host? As accomplished a broadcaster as he was, I remember thinking at that time (and I was pretty young) that he couldn't hold a candle to Barker. I grew up watching Bob host Truth or Consequences. He was amazing even back then. He and Johnny Carson (my other boyhood idol) were unequaled in their ability to have a response for no matter what situation they were in.

I really hope we get at least 1 more price is right dvd set, I still cant get over how good the episodes look on this dvd set.

No, it isn't from the 1972-1980 syndicated nighttime series. (which James hosted from 1972 to 1977 and Barker hosted from 1977 to 1980) This is a CBS daytime episode. The story goes that Bob was too ill to attend a day of tapings in December 1974. Since Dennis James was the syndicated Nighttime Price Is Right host at that time, he filled in for Bob on the CBS daytime show. I don't remember how many CBS Price episodes were taped that day, but I believe it was either two or three. That was the only time a substitute host was used for Bob on The Price Is Right. After that, whenever Bob could not make a taping, the taping was canceled and rescheduled at a later date. So, in 35 years, Bob only missed 1 taping day and/or 2 or 3 episodes of Price Is Right. Quite a record.

Regarding that CBS Dennis James episode in question, I taped it off of GSN in the late '90s. Probably 1997 when James died. Johnny Olson's opening spiel went like this, "...You are the first four contestants on The Price Is Right! And now, pinch-hitting today for Bob Barker is Dennis James!" Dennis made a comment at the end of the show hoping that Bob would get to feeling better and be back on tomorrow's show.

The 1972-1980 syndicated nighttime James/Barker series has supposedly been banned from rebroadcast by order of Bob Barker due to the high amount of fur coats that were offered and given away as prizes during its run. That is perhaps why GSN has never aired any episodes from that series. Remember, unlike the Tom Kennedy and Doug Davidson editions of Price which each aired 5x a week, the Dennis James/Bob Barker nighttime show only aired once a week. So perhaps the majority of those episodes do include furs.

It's also worth noting that with the exception of its original run in syndication during the 1994-1995 season, "The New Price Is Right" with Doug Davidson has never been rebroadcast either. Supposedly, GSN has the episodes in their possession, but hasn't paid the licensing fees to Paramount to air them.

David,I just wanted to say that im really enjoying those budget movie collections of the 70s and 80s, that Bci has been putting out.Im talking about sets like the school dazed collection, and drive in cult classics.Hope these will continue .

Speaking of which, do you know if there will still be a double-feature release of STAR CRASH / GALAXINA from BCI, David? I saw a few online sources that indicated it was streeting in mid-October, but then *poof*, nothing. Was it delayed, cancelled, or never in the cards to begin with?

That 4-disc PASSWORD line-up looks great! I'm not a big gameshow fan, but I always liked 1960s-era PASSWORD, so I'll have to pick that one up.

Meanwhile, I'll be enjoying SUPER ROBOT RED BARON, which should be arriving in my mailbox in the next day or so...

It just goes to show you how game shows have changed in their status over the years. Now-a-days we think of them as the homes of the C and D list stars, but back in the day it was like being on the Tonight Show.

It's not set in stone, but right now it's looking like late April. These sets take quite a bit of work between watching and choosing episodes, and then finding all the masters - not everything is labeled the same way (or correctly), so some investigating is needed.

today's "game shows" using stars are much more involving so you can only hook those C-Listers that don't have anything better to do.

Man, that sounds like an awesome job! Can't wait for the future releases! Maybe the possibility is still there for another set of The Price Is Right. Even though the episodes are limited, the last set had some great shows. I'm sure there are some equally as good that are available.

I hope Shirley Booth will be included. She was on "What's My Line" in May 1962, March 1963 and May 1963.

Tattletales and TTTT are both still in the works. We're in the process of going through episodes now.

Match Game v2 hasn't been started yet, but it's still in our plans. I'm not sure about Civilian Family Feud - we need to make sure we feel there is enough interest to make it worthwhile.

Michael, I ordered GSMGB during DeepDiscount's 25% sale and it shipped this weekend. I should have it early next week so if no one posts about it before then, I'll let you know how it is.

Having said that, I did see a couple episodes of this show when it aired on VH1. I liked it. If you're a game show fan, you should enjoy it. It's a collection of funny game show clips (a lot of the same ones you've probably seen on various specials over the years) intermixed with audience members playing Beat the Clock-style stunts for cheap prizes. Ben Stein hosts the show.

For the low price (I got it for less than $7 at DD's sale that ends today), I'd recommend the show to someone who's a fan of game shows. Keep in mind that's based solely on the show, as I have yet to see the DVD to know about the quality of it.

Thank you David for answering my question I appreciate it very much. I have been thinking of Fremantle's library and was wondering do you only have an interest in the Goodson-Todman portion of their library? If not, have you guys considered doing a DVD release of Let's Make A Deal?

It's fun. For me, the really stand-out parts are from a UK show called "Distraction".

I seem to remember David saying the reason they're concentrating on G-T releases is that is the one "game show" studio that they have a licencing deal in place for. Since Let's Make a Deal is owned by a different studio (Sony, I think), they'd have to work out a separate licencing deal for them.

That's exactly it. We have a great relationship with Fremantle, and they own all (or almost all) of the G-T library.

That's not to say that we won't, or haven't already, talked to other studios, but it makes sense to mine the G-T stuff first.

What a great list of Password players, David! I'm particularly intrigued by the Nancy Sinatra/Woody Allen show. It looks like this set will help keep me occupied while I wait for your "Andy Barker, P.I." collection.
