So do we know if those that currently have the rights to Rifleman that are currently working towards this anniversary set have better source material available to them then what was used by MPI?

Maybe it's time to drop Margie a note over at riflemanconnors.com and ask that she bring this up with former series producer Arnold Laven. Mr. Laven seems to be very good about answering any and all questions that she and web site posters have on "The Rifleman".

I also recall seeing "Rifleman" on Encore some time back and thinking the prints looked better than those in the MPI sets.

I'll add an "amen" to that as well, Michael. The Encore Western prints looked a lot better than the MPI ones. Not even close, in my book. I hope that's the source Mr. Laven is going with on this mega set.

Re: The Rifleman on DVD...why no season sets?

I sent an e-mail to Margie and I'll update this when I get a reply regarding the series set (source material info).

"Checkmate King Two Out"   Jeff Willis  "Combat! A Selmur Production"

I'm a 50's - mid-90's TV/DVD Collector. One DVD show since '96: Firefly

The Fugitive/See Hollywood & Die: [Miles] "What, you think I'm crazy?!" [Kimble] "Next question."

Jeff, did you ever get a response from Margie? Almost three months have passed-by.

Thanks.

No reply from Margie so far. I guess we'll hope for the best and, if a complete set is coming, hope that they remastered the episodes.

Re: The Rifleman on DVD...why no season sets?

This is one of those series that I'm surprised TimeLife hasn't snatched up the DVD rights to. This is right up their alley. A classic TV series that has yet to have proper DVD releases for which there is a rabid fan base but not necessarily one that will snatch these up from retail stores.

Sad to say, I've actually given up hope on an official DVD release for this great series. So many times, there have been rumblings of it being released on DVD and it never pans out.

Too bad a pending release of this set has seemingly dropped off the face of the earth. I have the MPI sets, but would have double-dipped if the quality was really solid (ENCORE WESTERNS solid) and the price was decent.

At this point I wouldn't mind if they just returned to Encore for another run so that I could at least DVR them.

Ditto, Gary. This is one of the very few double-dips that I'd go for as well, provided as you said, that the prints were all remastered (not MPI set duplicates) as well as fixing the MPI audio issues.

As mentioned on another thread, about complete series sets vs single-season sets, it's true that it's a guarantee that we'll get an entire series released but price tags may break the sale for a lot of collectors. It's a catch-22 issue, imo. Also, for me, there are a number of shows where I wouldn't be interested in collecting the entire run but just a few seasons of a show.

Rifleman is a rare exception for me.

That Sky King complete set is one that I'd love to have but that price tag is just not worth it for me at this time.

Re: The Rifleman on DVD...why no season sets?

I own about a dozen five-episode per tape VHS tapes of this wonderful series. I would spring for all five years (1958-63) of a new DVD set in a heartbeat. Let's see more of this show on DVD!

Arnold Laven, creator and producer of The Rifleman passed away earlier this month, on the 13th.

May he R.I.P.

I believe Margie had indicated she was corresponding with Mr. Laven about the possible complete-series set, so I wonder whether Mr. Laven's passing will affect any plans that had been put into place.

Curious, how did he end up with the rights to the Rifleman but not Big Valley? Based on the write up he was involved in both.

This could either speed things up for a Rifleman release or grind it to a halt. It seemed like he was trying to work out something himself. I assume it now goes to his family.

Guess he had a better deal with Rifleman than Big Valley :)
