Possible regrets on Sony 52 XBR3 purchase!

I just purchased (put down a deposit to hold) a 52" XBR3 from a local dealer in town. Got a pretty good deal since this model is closing out.

My question is...Did I jump the gun too soon since the XBR4s &5s are soon to be released? I had planned to purchase a LCD towards the end of the year. But with the reductions in price on the XBR3 I thought I'd pull the trigger now!

As you know technology purchases can give one heartburn!! I would hate to buy the XBR3 now and to find out I could pay essentially the same price for the XBR4 or XBR5 in a few months with the improved technology when these things begin to hit the floor in masses.

I searched forum threads on the XBR3 and new XBR4 and XBR5. There are notable improvements (120Hz 1.3HDMI, 10k bit) on the new models but is it enough for me to go back to the dealer, get my deposit and WAIT a couple months for the new releases???

Having second thoughts on the XBR now.

Re: Possible regrets on Sony 52 XBR3 purchase!

If they're closing out the XRB3, then I doubt you'll see a similar price for an XBR4 or 5 any time soon. I wouldn't worry about it unless you're willing to wait a year before buying.

I am considering an open-box XBR2 at a local store that is insanely cheap (an extended warranty is available or I wouldn't bother). . .not sure yet though.

It's *almost* as bad as buying a PC.

Re: Possible regrets on Sony 52 XBR3 purchase!

I hear ya,

The thing that's getting me is the price. I can save about $510 purchasing the 52XBR from an online authorized dealer to include a 3yr warranty that starts after the mfg warranty expires. The local retail store warranty is congruent with the mfg warranty.

I'm looking at saving money here. I'm sure you all can relate. This IS the best time to get the XBR if you're willing to sacrifice not having the new improvements that comes with the XBR4 and XBR5

Re: Possible regrets on Sony 52 XBR3 purchase!

Hey guys,

Didn't mean to Bump my own thread, but I'm searching for some good advice! I'm in a tug-of war struggle whether to pull the trigger on the closeout Sony 52" XBR3s or stay on the fence a little longer (end of year/first of year) and get the XBR5.

Talked to a local dealer, can pre-order a XBR4 now for $4099. Maybe can get a 52" XBR5 for about $4400 by the end of the year! It's still $1000 more than what I can get the XBR3 for right now.

pulling hairs from my head!

What would you get in the XBR5 for the extra $1000 that you wouldn't get in the XBR3?

1. 10 bit color processing and panel
2. x.v. color support
3. HDMI 1.3
4. Potential clouding fix
5. 120hz scan rate to mitigate motion blur
6. Greater contrast ratio
7. The overall technology to sustain me for at least the next 8-10yrs!

120hz is a must if you want a TV that will carry you into the next 5-8 years. Don't buy a 60hz set for over $3K. [lcd-bob]

I agree. I would wait, there's bound to be holiday sales. Pick up the xbr5 then and know you have the latest technology. If you don't, I guarantee you will be looking to upgrade in a year or two, something that is tough at these price points. I was looking at the xbr3 but am now willing to wait until next years tax refund to go for the xbr5!

Re: Possible regrets on Sony 52 XBR3 purchase!

just wait man, my friend. you know full well you'll be kicking yourself in 3 months (or sooner!) if you dont. While I don't believe in killing yourself over the inevitability of technological advances, I do believe you should corral as much technology as possible at the point of purchase, if reasonably priced. And in your case, I believe the upgrades are more than worth a matter of weeks..even at the premium price. 2-3 months will have you in good shape for the play-offs. Ikf it means anything, I was going to wait until as well unitl I found out that my mitisubishi HAS 4 1.3's and the x.v color...not to rub it in!! good luck!
