| Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) Nov. 13 Details: Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition (DVD, $40; Blu-ray Disc, $50). Includes three versions of the film: the 1977 original theatrical cut, the re-edited 1980 theatrical special edition, and Steven Spielberg's director's cut, released in 1998. Why it's important: It's the first time a Spielberg movie has been issued on high-definition disc, and it's the first home video release of all three versions What's new: An interview with Spielberg created especially for this release and a retrospective documentary. Plus: Only on the 50 GB Blu-ray edition are new "storyboard-to-scene" comparisons and the original 1977 "Watch the Skies" featurette. Blu-ray, says David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, "will add yet another new and thrilling dimension to this timeless film." |

Great news. I kind of had a feeling that we might be getting this Spielberg film earlier than any of the others. Doesn't seem like he has much involvment with Sony, so they don't have to walk on eggshells as far as the two properties they hold of his are concerned. Even better news- all three cuts of the film. First time since the Criterion LD we'll be seeing that- 'cept no four disc changes this time. I was thinking we might have been in line to get Jaws this year after all- until I read of Spielbergs dissatisfaction with Paramount over how they have been handling the Dreamworks films. Prior to that I would have thought- hey, he bolted so the studio probably feels no compunction about using properties they own outright as they see fit- but now I'm thinking, SS might be regreting splitting from Universal, They suspect as much, and if they play their cards right, they maybe can woo Dreamworks back when the contract is up for renewal next year. Not sure if Universal wants them back, but I'm guessing after Dreamgirls and Transformers, it wouldn't look like a bad idea. So even though they own Jaws (and some others) outright, and may have been planning on kicking them out sooner than expected- that could all be on hold now. just musing though. still- sweet news about CE3K. $50 msrp = $35 from Amazon, and maybe $28 if DD has another sale at that time. I can hang with those prices on this one. |
| Could Paramount Pictures (VIA) lose Steven Spielberg and the DreamWorks (DWA) studio it bought just 20 months ago for $1.53 billion? It's entirely possible. People close to Spielberg say he is vexed that Paramount has treated his team shabbily and grabbed credit for DreamWorks productions. If Spielberg were to leave, says a person familiar with the situation, he could take several of his hitmakers and the DreamWorks name with him. ...What's more, Spielberg could set up an entirely new company called, yes, DreamWorks. That's because DreamWorks Animation, which was spun out of the main DreamWorks studio, controls the name. (Paramount distributes Shrek and other animated films produced by DreamWorks Animation but doesn't own them.) |

Most current reviews on The Movie Rambler: Medicine for Melancholy; Sauna; Expedition Africa (Blu-ray); A Serious Man; Il Divo; Fear[s] of the Dark; The Prisoner: The Complete Series (Blu-ray); Saw VI; Amelia; The Nostradamus Files; Life After People: The Series-The Complete Season One; Left Bank
. Sadly, it was a mono print. It's long gone, I no longer collect film (what's the point?) but this is one of my favorite films. Having all three versions on this is a great selling point. Maybe now I can get rid of that ancient Criterion CAV!

| Through a process known as “seamless branching,” the Blu-ray version contains all three films on a single disc. |

Suffice it to say that making sure that Steven is happy with the results is an absolute priority.
