JK Rowling supposedly fought to keep the producers from cutting a key character from OotP since he has a key role in the finale. If you make the changes noted here, there's no reason to have kept him around as you'd lose the reasons for his confession and redemption.

Malcolm, have you read Book 7 yet? I don't really want to respond to that here but would love to discuss it in the After Hours section for Deathly Hallows (it seems a bit early for setting up a discussion thread for the Deathly Hallows film).

Yes. I haven't logged in all weekend, so I haven't got over to AH yet.

So you think it's okay to discuss Book 7 in this thread, even though members have politely asked not to?

Sorry, I don't.

Maybe a moderator can chime in with whether book 7 spoilers should be allowed in this thread?

I would think the only reason it would be allowed is if events in book 7 will affect how this movie will develop, which could be likely.

But, that should be very limited.

Re: Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince discussion...

It's too bad Michael Gambon was cast as Dumbledore... for some reason it is he that I always picture as Horace Slughorn when reading or listening to HBP.

Maybe they can slip Ian McKellan into Dumbledore's robes and use Gambon for Slughorn =)

Re: Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince discussion...

I'm back!

I have intentionally steered clear of anything remotely related to Harry Potter while reading (acutally listening) to the last book, which I finished this weekend.

I will not discuss it in this thread, as I respect those who have not finished the series, but would love to talk about it elsewhere. Didn't know if any of you might know of an appropriate sight to discuss?

All further comments will be based on the films, and I will be happy to start discussing plans for DH (Film) whenever the thread comes up. Any idea if they will use Yates again?

Jim Broadbent has confirmed that he'll be playing Professor Slughorn in an interview with Dark Horizons.

Re: Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince discussion...

I'll say this for the Harry Potter series... they've always managed to find some of the best adult cast in ANY film series...

Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, Richard Harris, John Hurt, John Cleese, Jason Isaacs, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, David Thewlis, Michael Gambon, Emma Thompson, Timothy Spall, Brendan Gleeson, Miranda Richardson, Ralph Fiennes, Imelda Staunton, Helena Bonham Carter and now Jim Broadbent.

Re: Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince discussion...

Good news for people who thought that OOTP was way, way too dark visually. David Yates has replaced Polish cinematographer Slawomir Idziak with French cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel (Amélie, Across the Universe). I thought both of those films were visually spectacular, full of vibrant color and life. I haven't seen his other work, so I don't know if that's consistent throughout his filmography but it bodes well here.

That news together with the casting of Broadbent as Slughorn inspires faith that Yates will make good on his promise to bring a lighter touch to the majority of HBP. The scripts from Steve Kloves have all ranged from competent to inspired. It's too bad he couldn't hand off the editing responsibilities to someone else too...

Re: Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince discussion...

Principal Photography started last Monday.

Last night, the Ministry of Magic sextet attended the National Movie Awards, a Brit take on the People's Choice Awards in the U.S. Here's a picture:

Poor Dan! Even in lifts he's the shortest one there. And Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley) edges out Rupert in small heels now. They're going to have to stick Dan on a crate to film the Harry/Ginny scenes.

Even though I was disappointed by much of OOTP, I can't help getting excited for HBP. The return of Steve Kloves means we'll hopefully have a screenplay on the level of GOF, I love what I've seen of Bruno Delbonnel's work (which promises a return of color to the Harry Potter world), and David Yates has promised a more lighthearted tone for much of the film. If only he could get himself a more traditional editor, I'd be totally onboard again.

Re: Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince discussion...

that is not a good picture of anyone but Dan and sorta Evanna. Jeez.

I'd be the first to cheer if they actually don't try to make Dan taller in comparison to Bonnie, and I say that as a 6'1" guy.

Jessie Cave to Play Lavender Brown in 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince'

A year or two older than I would have expected for the role, but otherwise just about perfectly what I imagined for this character. Blonde, but not magnificently bright blond. Very pretty but in a very common, mundane sort of way. Lavender is the type of person destined to be neither notorious nor spectacular. The prototypical average high school girl. I think that's what they got here. She shouldn't stand out as much as Emma Watson/Hermione, and she doesn't.

Re: Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince discussion...

Lavender is all about the personality, much moreso than appearance.

I think the actress is rather fetching, which I can say as she is 20 years old But this is Hollywood so each of the actresses looks a bit "better" than their character should, except (oddly) Fleur. Who should be much more attractive

Yeah, "Fleur" was a head-scratcher.

In case you haven't heard, Helen McCrory will be playing Narcissa Malfoy. She was previously cast as Bellatrix Lestrange for OOTP, but dropped out because she was expecting a baby.

At least we only have to wait until next year. The series skipped 2006 all together. Good question about Naomi Watts. Was her casting actually confirmed by Warner Bros? I agree that she'd make a better Narcissa than Crory, even if she does have the dung under her nose look down.

I believe the Naomi Watts/Joseph Fiennes/Stuart Townsend talk was debunked by their reps a few months ago.

In retrospect now, the call for McKellen as Dumbledore (after Harris passed away) was even more appropriate.
