Yeah. It's not like Harry Potter is coming out in a real tough slot (like May), it's coming out in November and is/was the big gun. Opening in July isn't going to help or hurt it. It's just an opportunity for them to sell more DVDs during the holidays.

As I noted in the BO thread, it may be a studio finance decision as well to even out the finances across fiscal years. If WB counted both TDK and HP against the current year, then had nothing big in '09, it would look very lopsided from an accounting/investor viewpoint.

Well that just blows! I was really looking forward to it. Now to have to wait an extra 8 months. Its Star Trek all over again.

My daughter heard an interview with Newell saying it had to due with the possibility of an actors strike.

Bring back John Doe! Or at least resolve the cliff-hanger with a 2hr movie or as an extra on a dvd release.

I'm betting Disney is wishing that they had pushed Prince Caspian to November now that HP is out of the way. Considering it's somewhat average box office take when it was released this last May in the middle of a very crowded month (with Indiana Jones, Iron Man, etc.), they're probably kicking themselves right now. Maybe it would have done better in the fall/holiday season similar to Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe back in '05.

With how long it took for any sort of trailer to come out, and the fact that there wasn't one attached to TDK, I had been half anticipating that there might be some kind of delay. (I mean... TDK had a teaser a year beforehand, which is obviously an extreme. But the 007 sequel had a trailer come out in either late June or early July, and that's opening around the same time HP6 was scheduled. The absence of a trailer was very noticeable to me. Of course, then they put it out, make it look wicked cool, and push back the movie...grr...)

I'm sure they're not lying about the business end of it but I wouldn't be surprised if there was more to the story -- despite their claims to the contrary, maybe the movie did still need a little work and they knew it was going to come down to the wire, so when the opportunity to delay it presented itself, they jumped. Just my guess.

One thing Time Warner may have to seriously consider is that given director David Yates wants to film both parts of Deathly Hallows simultaneously, that could mean by the time of the July 17, 2009 release the cast and crew will be heavily tied up in production of the two movies, and that could mean the three big stars of the movie series--Dan Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson--will be unable to attend any premiere showings of the Half-Blood Prince. This means these three stars will only be available via satellite link from the production sets used to film Deathly Hallows.

given enough planning time they can build a two week hiatus for HBP press into the shooting schedule. It could actually be something that works for the film, if their UPM is on top of things.

I concur. This decision is likely strictly a financial one to balance the cash flow over this year and next.

Warner Bros must really be feeling the heat from fans because COO Alan Horn felt compelled to release yet another statement trying to put down the flames:
Many of you have written to me to express your disappointment in our moving Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to Summer 2009.

Please be assured that we share your love for Harry Potter and would certainly never do anything to hurt any of the films. Over the past 10 years, we have nurtured and protected each film, and the integrity of the books upon which they are based, to the best of our ability.

The decision to move Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was not taken lightly, and was never intended to upset our Harry Potter fans. We know you have built this series into what it is, and we thank you for your ongoing enthusiasm and support.

If I may offer a silver lining: there would have been a two-year gap between Half-Blood Prince and the much-anticipated first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which opens in November 2010.
So although we have to wait a little longer for Half-Blood Prince, the wait from that film until Deathly Hallows will be less than 18 months. I am sorry to have disappointed you now, but if you hold on a little longer, I believe it will be worth the wait.

I think that statement from Horn could end up forcing a shareholder lawsuit, especially from what I've heard about the fact that outside of a few effects shots the movie is essentially complete. WB may end up doing an earlier release, especially given the tremendous logistics needed to film two Deathly Hallows movies in one principal shoot, which means production may have to start as early as June 2009.

In my humble opinion, I think Warner Brothers will within the next two weeks announce that Half-Blood Prince gets an earlier release date the placate fans, possibly April 3, 2009 (to take advantage of the Easter Week break).

In the long run I don't see any problem with releasing the film at a more profitable time. Unless you had unmovable events planned around the November release date (like in years past, we did have my daughter's birthday party planned around the release), the change in release date isn't a big deal. The movie will come out. You have to wait a little longer to see it, but there are plenty of other things you can occupy your time with. As Horn says, this will then reduce the gap until the following film.

Exactly. So the fans have to wait a little longer ... boohoo ! Are they going to boycott the film or something? Of course not! So what does WB care if they wait a while longer. Nothing. They don't lose out of this. It only shows that there's still a big interest in the Harry Potter franchise which is always a good thing.

My understanding is that in the movie threads, the books are considered spoiler material, so I am going to spoiler tag some things from the novel. I've always had a love for characters that weren't exactly all good or all evil, but that their actions were thought provoking. Magneto from X-Men, Al Swearingen from Deadwood, et al. Harry Potter has been nearly a 100% good guy in the movies. Maybe at most a little bit moody, whereas in the books, he can be a pretty big prick at times. On the flip side, Malfoy has always been annoying and a troublemaker, but never really evil. I guess this is ok for movies, especially the ones geared for kids where you have a defined hero and antagonist. In book 6:

Malfoy gets a lot of depth to his character. He is doing something truly evil in trying to work up the nerve and the ability to kill Dumbledore, but his motivation is to protect his family and serve his family's interests. Meanwhile, his mother is working so hard to save Draco from Voldemort. I really liked how JKR made Malfoy compelling there. On the flip side, Harry is working so hard to fight Voldemort and as usual ignoring Hermione's words of caution about being seduced by the HBP's potions and spells. When he uses the sectum sempra (sp?) curse on Malfoy, he's done something extremely destructive, based on his own ignorance, stupidity and bravado. What I'm wondering is how they'll treat it in the movie? Because they haven't really portrayed Harry's more annoying (and realistic) qualities, these scenes may seem to come out of left field. Or maybe they make Malfoy about to use avada kedavra in a sort of Greedo shot first revision. Come to think of it, I don't remember what Malfoy was about to do to Harry. Anyway, I'm hoping they give it the depth it deserves.

Why would it though? What are fans gonna do? Not see it? Please.. they will.. even if they threaten they won't. What would that serve? Probably an even longer wait for the seventh film. So they gotta wait 6 more months.. how does this affect anybody.. go do something productive haha.
