Re: New White Stripes - Anyone get it?

Yeah, picked it up a week or so ago. Love it so far. I have tickets to see them later in the summer. It should be great.

Edit: Just for kicks, I've been watching the prices of some of their collectibles on Ebay. Some of the vinyl they've put out goes for hundreds of dollars. Amazing.

Yes.
Picked up Get Behind Me Satan when it was released and last year I went to the ACL taping for The Raconteurs.
Also bought their album.
I love Icky Thump, well, 95% of it.

I'll be filling in more of their discography soon.

Re: New White Stripes - Anyone get it?

Hoping to pick up Icky Thump soon. They're a band whose work I'd pick up sight unseen. Also hope there'll be another concert dvd; I got their Under Blackpool Lights disc and in spite of the image quality, I like the live performance a lot.

It wasn't long ago that they performed a song from their new album on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. They were great as usual.

I'm on my 5th or 6th listen....for sure one of my new favorites.

They are very diversified and every song is so unique.

Re: New White Stripes - Anyone get it?

They are touring around Canada right now and as well as the major areas they have been playing impromptu spots like bus depots, YMCA's, on their tour Bus with a few fans, etc etc. Plus they have been playing venues in the Arctic to 400 to 600 people. Really cool that they are doing this.

Steve Hoffman has just done Icky Thump on Vinyl and I am hoping big time that Warner might give this one a chance on DVDA (White seems pretty switched on with stuff like this but I'm sure it is in the hands of the lawyers and marketing dudes).

It's a keeper in any format.

Here are some interesting comments about the vinyl release from the man who mastered it (Steve Hoffman plus Kevin Gray):

around Page 6 people start getting their copies and making comments.

Re: New White Stripes - Anyone get it?

I've noticed something about their CD's and I can't figure it out.

I listen to them at home and they sound great. I have 2 small subs built into my Deftech 7002's and they can provide a decent amount of bass. Other CD's I had will really get things moving.

Their CD's seem to be recorded correctly, ie without a lot of compression.

However I can't listen to them in my car. I have a Corvette with MB Quartz tweeter/midrange combo, 400 watt amp powering those and a 12" solobaric with a 800watt running that. I bought the car with the system in it and it was all professionally done. Its been tuned and has individual crossovers for each corner.

Musically its very clean and sounds great on a wide variety of music.

However when I play their CD the bass is SO strong. I've tuned the car and the EQ. The only thing I play around with is the sub level. Listening to most music I have to go from 0 to +2 on the setting, thats a range of probably 8db.

On the WS CD I have to goto -5! The problem is the lower I go the less fullness there is to the bass. Its tough to explain. If there is a rising and falling to each bass hit as I go lower that rise and fall becomes shorter and shorter.

Then by the time I adjust the sub everything else just sounds out of whack.

I've never heard that sub put out the bass that their CD's do, but at home it sounds fine with no adjustment at all. I play most of the same music and there is always very little adjustment. At home I'll even dial the sub up or down a single notch deppending on what we're listening to, but nothing like I had to do in the car.

I'll get the meter out today, shut off the speakers and just run the sub to get some readings.

Re: New White Stripes - Anyone get it?

Eric, Could the fact that the White Stripes have no bass guitar in their songs make a difference*? I don't have a solution, but that may be part of the reason. The only deep base you should get is from Meg's bass drum. Just a thought.

*I have just gotten into the White Stripes and don't see a bass player credited on the new CD nor is there a bass player on the Blackpool Lights DVD. If I am wrong, please disregard.

Re: New White Stripes - Anyone get it?

Heh, forgot about this thread...

Caught them about a week and a half ago down in Birmingham. Amazing show, really amazing. The venue was an old gutted mill of some sort that had been turned into a semi-outdoor concert hall. No seats, standing room only and hot as hell, but worth every minute of it. The only downside was that we got there about 20 minutes too late to get concert posters. Oh well.
