First impression: Oh, my, that looks right.

Second impression: How are they going to get a movie out of that picture book?

Looks interesting. But it's been taking a long time to make this thing. It started shooting in January and won't be released until next fall.

For some reason, I just cannot see the picture on that site. Any chance anyone could post it?

Re: Where the Wild Things Are

Thanks, David,

I haven't read this book for 20 years or so, I can't even remember the story, but from what I remember, they do seem to have got the tone right. I was thinking we'd actually get to see one of the wild things, but that was just dumb (no way they would reveal something like that this early). But it is a great picture, intriguing, evocative. With someone like Spike Jonze behind it, I'm hoping for something special.

Basically my reaction as well. There isn't much of a story there, so there will have to be some expansion. That will be what determines if it is any good or not.

Re: Where the Wild Things Are

The book had a scary edge to it for a kid's story. Not only in the depiction of the surreal monster kingdom. But the way the kid's petulant anger and arrogance summons and reflects the world. Hope Jones captures that aspect.

Re: Where the Wild Things Are

Huh, live action, that's odd. I would have expected animated, as that was one of the best parts of the book. I'm very skeptical it will come out well this way, I think it's a kind of project that really demands to be animated. If I had to envision it really come off, I'd think a rotoscoped film in the same style as the book would really be the most interesting way to do it, the most engrossing. I dunno, just seeing that picture, I'm expecting to be dissappointed. :-/

Re: Where the Wild Things Are

Is that still the same kid?

If anyone hasn't been following, this one seems to be a bit in trouble. Apparently the suits didn't like Spike Jonze's cut and they're currently undergoing month of reshoots. One of the complaints so far has been that they didn't like the kid playing Max.

I think this is still slated to be released next fall. Hard to believe that by that time, they'll have been in production for three years.

Re: Where the Wild Things Are

Warner Bros. recently removed this from its release schedule.. which isn't a positive thing to hear. But they've been as quoted as saying that they're going to stick behind Spike Jonze and keep pushing until the movie is really ready (or until WB deems it ready, I guess)

Quote:
"We've given him more money and, even more importantly, more time for him to work on the film," Horn said. "We'd like to find a common ground that represents Spike's vision but still offers a film that really delivers for a broad-based audience. We obviously still have a challenge on our hands. But I wouldn't call it a problem, simply a challenge. No one wants to turn this into a bland, sanitized studio movie. This is a very special piece of material and we're just trying to get it right."

Re: Where the Wild Things Are

that sounds like the studio trying to save face. I want to see the version that had kids scared to tears frankly.
