Coming to theaters this fall, Disney will release Enchanted, a classic princess fairytale with a modern day twist, starring Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey and Susan Sarandon. The entertainment will continue as Sleeping Beauty is planned for re-release on DVD in 2008 and will be available on Blue Ray for the first time. In 2009, the highly anticipated release of The Princess and the Frog will introduce Disney's newest princess.

I can't believe they got Blue Ray wrong.

Until all studios (BD, HD DVD, and neutral alike) prove otherwise with their actions, all future HD release announcements will be met by me with my fingers in my ears and me saying, "Nah, nah, nah, nah, I can't hear you"!

Pretty Hot, but considering how recently Sleeping Beauty hit DVD, I wouldn't think it was time for this one to cycle around again.

Brett,

I'm tickled pink.

Disney cracks me up. So many promoted titles, so little actually delivered.

Once they start actually releasing catalog titles, then I'll get excited.

I agree. While I certainly would love to buy a High Def copy of 'Sleeping Beauty', this is one I will not be holding my breath for.

Yes, it is a shame how jaded I have become regarding HD software announcements. While my wife disagrees, Sleeping Beauty has always been one of my personal favorites as far as Disney animation is concerned, so, by all rights, I should be a lot more excited about this than I am given the realities of the marketplace.

Re: Sleeping Beauty BD - 2008

Eventually all the Disney catalog will show up on BD. It's just a matter of how long to get there.

So let's just relax with a sense of optimism that Disney is processing this one in their boardrooms... and wait to see when that official announcement, and release, actually happen...

Take that post with a ton of sea salt, as after more than ten years "all the Disney catalog" has not shown up on SD DVD. The estimated life span for HD Disc is ten years. Heck, if you ask DaViD he'll tell you he & his insides know M$ is killing off HD Discs tomorrow!

Like "The Scarecrow" is coming out on BD in "just a matter of time"!!!

Please cut us some slack. You know that eventually all the Disney catalog will not show up on BD. You can't just post such obvious pro-one-format stuff, w/o getting called on it. Would you "cut me some slack", if I posted Uni is releasing their entire catalog on HD DVD?

No hard feelings, just didn't want anyone reading your post to think "all the Disney catalog would be on BD". Song of the South, anyone?

I'll be very interested to see how HD benefits 2D animation- will we actually see the brush strokes on the cells- or will all these things be scrubbed clean so as not to make this look like a something that was actually made by human beings (human technology being so 20th century and all).

Aside from Bambi, I've been disappointed with almost every single Disney platinum release I've seen so far.

Just for the record, I thought "The Lion King" and "Aladdin" transfers were both stunning ... and more than representative of what we saw in the theaters. And the two-disc "Pocahontas" and "Lady and the Tramp" re-issues were both more than worth the double-dip.

IMHO, the rest were usually good but not great. It's a *real shame* that "Beauty and the Beast" wasn't better.

Speaking as a HD-DVD owner, I'm really looking forward to re-purchasing all of these in Hi-Def. It's just a shame that I'll have to purchase either a Blu-ray or combo player in order to be able to do that ... (But, wait!! Perhaps Disney will embrace "TotalHD"!? )

Re: Sleeping Beauty BD - 2008

Thanks Cees,

Whew!

I didn't mean to state that 100% of every single catalog title will show up on *any* format... after all... we many never see Song Of The South.

My use of "all" was in the usual sense... that all the Disney stuff we see on DVD will eventually move over to HD media or whatever is next...

Re: Sleeping Beauty BD - 2008

Well then, let's be perfectly clear....

As of right now, there is 0% chance of *any* Disney film being released on HD DVD.

How's that Ed?

Re: Sleeping Beauty BD - 2008

It's not like Disney doesn't already have HD transfers available. They've already run Sleeping Beauty, The Lion King, The Lion King, Lady and the Tramp, etc, etc, on ABC-HD over the past number of years.

Sleeping Beauty by far was among their best looking classic transfers. The Lion King was their best looking of the newer bunch.

Re: Sleeping Beauty BD - 2008

While Sleeping Beauty is absolutely beautiful to look at, imo the movie itself is a bore, except for Malecifent, but I would loved to bored with it in Hi-Def.
I have to think that Disney would not change their trickle-down method of releasing movies just for Hi-Def.
Let's see Lion King or The Incredibles by what 2010? or download from DisneyNet.net?

All Universal releases will be on HD DVD, soon enough.
Thanks Cees, back on top ick...
What's wrong with the framing/aspect ratio on the SD DVD?
Any other 'problems' w/the DVD?
Thanks, one of my fave Mouse movies of all-time!

EDitEDbyED:
From the esteemed Mr. Harris;
"I'm seeing an overly digitized and cleaned image, which worked with Snow White, but...

What I'm seeing here is a loss of sharpness, which has then been re-sharpened, with halos around areas of high contrast.

This also appears to have been produced from a 35mm scope element which has been poorly cropped vertically, as the bottom of the image is missing."

So maybe a few "problems"!!!

Re: Sleeping Beauty BD - 2008

Most of the problems (aside from framing issues) with the SB DVD were compression-mastering related for the DVD itself: that loss of detail and edge-ringing (which was REALLY annoying once I got an HD display... my old SD 16x9 set didn't really show it since it was a smaller screen when I did the DVD review).

The HD transfer should lack those problems, though questions about the digital clean-up are the same questions that can be raised for all similar Disney titles:

Tramp
Snow White
Bambi
Cinerella
Peter Pan

Thanks, as always.

Having seen what the Mouse has done so far on BD, what would be your guesstimate? (Dinosaur, is the only title that comes to my mind)

Re: Sleeping Beauty BD - 2008

Guesstimate about quality?

I have NO DOUBTS that when Sleeping Beauty arrives on BD, it will positively blow our HD minds.

Disney's Dinosaur is actually a pretty "ho-hum" BD title from Disney: they released it early on from an existing HD master and used MPEG2 at pretty average rates. It lacks the clarity and depth of many of their newer reference-setting releases.

As of now, virtually everything released by Disney on BD is being treated with the utmost care: fresh HD masters and optimal compression/mastering. Chicago and Pirates were both amazing and completely stomp all over any SD DVD release.

Re: Sleeping Beauty BD - 2008

I've already seen Sleeping Beauty in HD and it already blew my mind. In fact when ABC broadcast it in HD it was the anniversary cleaned up master used for DVD for and OAR as well.

They only broadcast it 2x, and I really don't know why I didn't make a permanent recording to DVHS. Probably because I just hate having to edit out the commercials.

Here' the doubt I have: Disbiz uses the same transfer & because its in HD, we see more of the 'same'.

Good to know!
So, "Chicago" did not have the filtering of the SD DVD? That makes me feel MUCH better. I was thinking the "ills" of SD DVD were "in" the transfer/source. However, if the Mouse's transfers/sources are 'clean' & artifacts were only added when being done in SD for DVD, that would be GREAT!!!
So it may very well be, we get a primo Nemo on HD?!?!?!

Re: Sleeping Beauty BD - 2008

Ed,

so far *all* of Disney's BDs have totally stomped all over their SD DVD versions... and made it *very* clear that the usual Disney problems with SD DVD are related to the video department responsible for DVD mastering. Those artifacts (like filtering and edge-halos) are not on the HD versions, which are consistently *reference* in quality.

I already stated that the HD master is probably in perfect shape... just the SD DVD mastering that was to blame for problem on the DVD. Recyling that HD master might not be a bad thing. Wait and see.

Blu-ray interactivity enlivens 'Sleeping Beauty'

Quote:
At this point, Blu-ray accounts for about 5% of overall disc sales, according to Nielsen VideoScan. To really start the ball rolling, studios believe it'll take not just a clearer picture but a completely different and interactive experience.

That's the chief reason Disney is pushing the envelope with Sleeping Beauty, much as the studio pushed people to DVD in late 2001 with an innovative special edition of Snow White, which became the first disc to sell 1 million units in a single day.
