The continuing story of Queen Elizabeth I, this sequel brings back most of everyone from the first film "Elizabeth" from 1998. Here's the trailer...

Re: Elizabeth: The Golden Age (sequel to Elizabeth)

I wasn't too crazy about the original (maybe I should give it another viewing) but that trailer looks pretty darn good in my opinion.

Re: Elizabeth: The Golden Age (sequel to Elizabeth)

I liked the first quite a bit...a sort of historical, feminine Godfather, so to speak. Heard rumors about a sequel, and I consider it good news. If Cate is back

EDIT: And she is. As is Rush. And they added Clive Owen. All good news, and I like the visuals. Looking quite forward to this...the trailer was a nice treat. Many thanks!

Re: Elizabeth: The Golden Age (sequel to Elizabeth)

The original is one I enjoy in spite of itself. The narrative is a bit of a mess, but I would never pass up the opportunity to see Blanchett and Rush together. I at least look forward to this.

Ah, my wife's favorite queen. She didn't much like the first one, but I'm sure she will want to see this.

The DVD commentary for the original is pretty good. I liked it better after a few rewatches.

I had no idea they were doing this -- ten years seems like a good time to wait for the sequel -- and it's nice to see a lot of the same talent in front and behind the camera back. Looking forward to it.

Love the first film. Can't wait for the second.

Re: Elizabeth: The Golden Age (sequel to Elizabeth)

Wow...that is one hell of a trailer! Inspired me to dig out the original and watch it again, and I must say this continuation looks entirely different in terms of tone and scope. It looks bright, rousing and BIG. Apparently since what was once a cast of unknowns are now all A-list stars, the director was able to secure a budget to match. Elizabeth's fight against the Spanish Armada is one of the great underdog battles in history, so it'll be exciting to see how that is dealt with.

All in all, that trailer has me more psyched to see this than some of the big films out this summer.

Okay, I am officially excited for this.

Thanks to Pirates 3, I'm all on a Geoffrey Rush kick, so I watched the first Elizabeth over the weekend, then sought out the trailer for this sequel. It looks really good. And you really can't beat the greatness of the cast!

I think that the "bigger and bolder" look of The Golden Age has to do with the evolution of the character of Elizabeth. In the first movie, she is surrounded by enemies and her reign seems tenuous at best. But in TGA, her reign is far more secure and England is much better off.

I can't wait to see this movie. It's my #1 anticipated movie of the fall season.

Re: Elizabeth: The Golden Age (sequel to Elizabeth)

DVD commentary - one of the best you'll hear, at least if you actually want to know what the director was thinking with what he tried to put on screen rather than the funny story about when the cast went out drinking.

I LOVED the first film, Godfather ending and all. The cool thing about this sequel is that it makes sense to have one, there is so many more interesting stages to her reign. You can go in a totally different direction with the themes and not have to rehash the first film at all.

I thought Rush should have won Best Supporting for his Elizabeth role rather than his SiL role (both were great though). And how about Joe Fiennes, in both films Queen Elizabeth denies him his true love.

Totally agree about the commentary track. It's a fantastic listen to really understand why and how Kapur made his movie.

And in what I think is a fascinating idea, Kapur would like to make a third Elizabeth movie with Cate in about ten years which would examine the very end of her reign, thereby covering the three stages of her life (Power, Immortality, & Mortality) in the Elizabeth Trilogy. Just seeing Cate evolve as an actress and as this character over this twenty year period would be something else.

Re: Elizabeth: The Golden Age (sequel to Elizabeth)

Can't wait. This adds a bit to the earlier trailer. Looks like a showcase for Cate, but I'll pay to watch her chew a little scenery.

And I hope Kapur does make that third Elizabeth in 10 years.

Re: Elizabeth: The Golden Age (sequel to Elizabeth)

To this day I still believe she was robbed of a Best Actress Oscar for Elizabeth. I do hope she gets nominated again for The Golden Age but it's going to be tough to beat Julie Christie in Away From her.

And maybe -- finally -- that adaptation of Asimov's Foundation he's been developing for almost as long, too.

Agree that a third Elizabeth would be a very interesting concept.

Re: Elizabeth: The Golden Age (sequel to Elizabeth)

Hmmmm...are they going to insinuate an affair with Owen/Walter Raleigh? What an odd choice. There is no sign of Leicester in the credits at all.

I don't know if Cate can pull this off for an award with Mirren having kicked so much ass last year. The HBO mini-series was very, VERY good.

However, the trailer does look great!

There was an article about this movie in a recent EW. I don't know about a full blown affair but they are definitely playing the angle that she's in love with Raleigh. The director was also pretty upfront about how he doesn't have much issue altering history for dramatic purposes.

The trailer looks brilliant! Elizabeth is one of favorite movies so, hopefully, this one will not disappoint.
