It's hard to believe it's been 10 years since the release of this film!
There is quite a bit of interesting history to it as well. Apparently after the film was initially screened, director Phillip Noyce and Paramount did a $2 million refilming of the ending.
I have been so curious to see this original version, as Noyce notes on the commentary that he liked both endings.

I also recently read an article from Bruce Burl (who penned the novel of the film) and he said that the ending of the film actually came in the middle of the finished product. There was some added things at the end as well with Kilmer in the geeky old guy disguise again and that chase sequence.
I think it would be a great idea for Paramount to get a new version out for it's 10 anniversary.
