The Saint 1997 Alternate release?

It's hard to believe it's been 10 years since the release of this film!

There is quite a bit of interesting history to it as well. Apparently after the film was initially screened, director Phillip Noyce and Paramount did a $2 million refilming of the ending.

I have been so curious to see this original version, as Noyce notes on the commentary that he liked both endings.

There's some really good info on it here.

I also recently read an article from Bruce Burl (who penned the novel of the film) and he said that the ending of the film actually came in the middle of the finished product. There was some added things at the end as well with Kilmer in the geeky old guy disguise again and that chase sequence.

I think it would be a great idea for Paramount to get a new version out for it's 10 anniversary.

Re: The Saint 1997 Alternate release?

SPOILERS

Elisabeth Shue dies in the original ending, which was a huge downer that audiences (understandably) hated across the board.

They also described the original version as being even more confusing than the theatrical cut, which is not a plus, either. IMO I'd much rather have the version we've got

I'd be happy with seeing the deleted scenes, but I'd hate to have another cut supplant the theatrical version (as has recently happened with PAYBACK) altogether.

Agreed! I'd want both versions contained on the same DVD set!
The director has commented that he didn't see one version being better than the other. I'd really like to see the original version of the film as it was screened!!

Did you guys like this movie? For whatever reason, it seems to have a bad rap.

I've had about 20 chances to buy it for almost nothing and passed because I thought it would be junk.

Re: The Saint 1997 Alternate release?

What is it with Philip Noyce and endings?

If I recall, Dead Calm had it's ending reshot, as well as Patriot Games, Sliver and The Saint.

Or is that just a rumor?

Not sure about Dead Calm, but the others all had their endings reshot.

EDIT: Just checked IMDB, and yep, the ending for Dead Calm was originally a bit different.

Re: The Saint 1997 Alternate release?

Have Noyce's other films had the alternate endings shown on DVD?

Regarding The Saint, I think the change in plot comes quite a ways before the climax of the film, so it would be interesting to see how everything plays out in not just a new ending last scene, but quite a bit of different filmed scenes and the finale of the film? Plus as Paramount intended to make this a franchise would the ending expanded on the idea that he would return for another adventure?

Re: The Saint 1997 Alternate release?

I feel The Saint is a good film. Not great, but a good film. Certainly worth $5 cost of the dvd that it can easily be found for.

I heard that there is a new Saint project in the works now.

James Purefoy To Play Simon Templar in The Saint - The Saint and Leslie Charteris Blog

Hopefully it will lead to a new DVD and an HD-DVD of the film.
