All of this is dependent upon extant elements and their condition, and what it is that the owner wishes to create from them.

Scanning in 8k from a clean source to create an HD element is a waste of dollars and energy.

Each project has its own needs, and route for a derivative image.

how to they even give a 4k version to a theatre to show,is it a hard drive
they send out??

Depends, It can be downloaded into the theater's media server via satellite, or a high speed t3 line, they can be delivered on hard drives or it can be recorded out to film and delivered in the traditional fashion.

Worth a mention with regards to Super Technirama 70, that Paramount UK have recently remastered the movie 'Zulu'(also 'The Italian Job"). I don't know any of the background to the remaster/restoration,i.e. film or digital, but I can honestly say it was superb. I would put the picture quality above the recent Blu-Ray of '2001' and the HD-dvd of 'Grand Prix', it's that good! The print seems to be in perfect condition with no damage at all.The aspect ratio was cropped compared to the 2:35:1 dvd,which might indicate that a different source was used? This I think, is good news for all of us who have a passion for large format films in the theatre and at home - including the eventual Blu-Ray release of 'LOA'.

Interesting that you would mention Zulu - I have been fortunate to sample it and I was very impressed with the very vivid colors and fantastic cinematography but not with some sort of degraining or DNR they used on this fine film - it does not look very film like and especially fine textures in actor's faces are conspiciously missing in the scenes I have sampled - seems the algorithms used cannot tell the difference between skin textures and grain/noise. So on a smaller monitor and at larger viewing distances the picture can look rather good but with larger screens and going closer it looks very artificial at least to me. As it is horizontal 35mm scanning Super Technirama 70 should not be that much more problematic than scanning standard 35mm - you probably can do it on the same scanning equipment so for the purpose of HD releases we should be all set and hopefully without the DNR and/or degraining that was used on Zulu.

The Zulu transfer that aired on TV has less detail than and about as much grain as Patton (none that is) I surely hope that a master exists that can be put on a Blu-Ray without the waxy look that plagued the TV version.

If this comes out without excessive DNR and grain reduction we will be in for a treat, I am hoping for the best.

The Digital Bits says that Sony will release the BRD LOA as part of a 17 disc "best picture" set on November 18th. No word I've seen on an individual BRD LOA release...I'm not sure I can afford a 17 disc BRD set right now.

^I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that they were talking about a 17 disc DVD release.

Watching 'How The West Was One' last night,there is no doubt that Warner's Have raised the bar with this transfer to Blu-Ray.
The disc also contains an excellent and informative commentary track. This lead my thoughts back to LOA and what now seems a delay in the release of the movie on Blu-Ray.
It would seem to give Sony the time to compile and record a great commentary track,of which time may be running out for some of the contributors.

My dream track would contain the following.
Robert A.Harris, Peter O'Toole, Omar Sharif, Maurice Jarre(may need to be taken from archive recording), Anne V.Coates.
It could also contain recorded interviews with other members of the cast and crew such as David Lean.
In a real fantasy world how about Mr Spielberg, (He apparently sat next to David Lean whilst viewing the 89 Restoration,and Lean gave an informal commentary!)and Mr. Scorsese

Well, it's on DigitalBits' Rumor Mill for this year. I really hope it happens, and I hope it will look amazing. Sony has done a lot of the Blu-Ray's right, so it should be ok. And now we'll have to wait for an official press release from Sony .

This months UK Home Cinema Choice magazine has an interview with Sony studio boss Rich Marty about Blu-ray plans. He says that LAWRENCE is a title which people keep asking about but they want to do it right and are still working on it.

That is good news indeed! I knew Sony would step up to the plate and was pretty sure the big delay meant good things. Hopefully a nice 8k scan ala Baraka. I hope it's released sometime next year. Lawrence is easily my most wanted Blu-ray. Very good news!
