Amazon is launching new "Classical Blowout" store

I learned about this in the NY Times today:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/19/te...=1&oref=slogin

Quote:
According to Paco Underhill, chief executive of Envirosell, a New York-based retail consultancy, Tower’s closing has been “absolutely devastating for the classical music community. And the transition to online isn’t as natural as it might be for products with a younger customer base.”

So what store wants customers who can differentiate among Beethoven’s symphonies (other than the Fifth)? Perhaps not surprisingly, Amazon does. The Internet’s catch-all merchant last week opened a classical music discount store — a move, analysts said, that could benefit the company handsomely, since classical fans actually buy, rather than steal, their music.

Here's a link to the Amazon Classical Blowout site:

I wonder how this will pan out for us.

Re: Amazon is launching new "Classical Blowout" store

Hasn't Amazon always had the 'Classical for $4.99/$6.99/$9.99' category?

What Amazon needs: Search by classic recording label.

Yes, their Classical Blowout section has been around for quite a while now. Maybe they just officially announced it. (It's also possible that the reporter was mistaken.)

I agree that their classical search is horrible. You type in the name of a particular piece, and it returns 500 discs in random order, some of which maybe include a tiny excerpt of the piece in question or maybe just something else by the composer or recording artist.

BTW, Amazon *does* let you search by label. Click on Advanced Search and scroll down to Search Classical and Opera. Hm, it also has fields for conductor, orchestra, performer, composer. . .methinks I need to better acquaint myself with Amazon's Advanced Search feature.
