Star Wars Guy's HT

Well, it's no where near what a lot of you guys have done. I have to share the family room, so this is the best I can currently do in this house (Phase 3). It's definately not the ideal set up, but it's better than nothing.

Another great job done on less than ideal room dimensions! It must have been a real struggle but it looks like you solved your problems with some very creative thinking.

Thanks. This current house has no basement, so there was no way for me to have a dedicated room without building on. Since we plan on moving within the next few years, that's not really an option. I had told my wife that one of the requirements for our next house would be to have space for me to make a more dedicated theater, which she balked at (thinking $$$). However, after watching 25 movies on the screen for the month of February alone, and her complaining that it's a tad loud most of the time (the sound opens up 10 times more since we rearranged the room and she can hear everything even when upstairs with the door closed), she's starting to reconsider. It had always been the running joke that I would hold off on getting a projector and screen until we moved into a bigger house where I could have the dedicated room, however with the affordability of the Infocus IN72, I found it well within my budget and decided to treat myself.

Thanks. Nice avatar! You probably didn't look at Phase 1, but I have a wall of Star Wars autographs (it's doubled since then thanks to Celebration 3, so I really need to put up a new picture in Phase 3.)

I checked your HT out too, very nice. I've got a cardboard Darth Maul that talks (similar to the ones you have), but as you can see by the smallness of my room, I don't even have a place to display him.

Going to Celebration 2 & 3 was kind of a no-brainer as I'm only 2.5 hours from Indy. The big sell was to go to Celebration 1 in Denver back in 1999, but since I have family out there that we stayed with, the wife was fine with it. Now she's the one who's disappointed that we're not going to L.A. this year for Celebration 4, since this will be the first one we've missed.

Great job Star Wars Guy.
It looks like you're very creative and outgoing - a big + in saving money. We can really save some $$$ by doing it ourselves.
The big ticket items in our conversion was carpet ($300) and a two car extended carport ($750) The false wall was about $150.

It took about a month working weekends and produced a 20x24 family room.

Sounds like you have a smart decision - wait for the upcoming move. Our old house had a similar living room as yours, and we only had our 42" RP.

I also wanted a dedicated room in our next house. One 10x15 foot bedroom was available- and I set things up in that room but still wasn't optimum.
You've seen the pics of my modest HT, it's our converted garage.
Since the garage occupied 1/4 of our house, after a year or two convinced the wife how much better to be a living space.
We planned it, planned it again for what seemed forever- when one Saturday morning I woke up and decided "This is the day" and went straight to the garage to dissassemble the tracks for the door. My wife was a bit aprehensive about my sudden decision but it all worked out pretty good.

If our next house has an attached garage, (Even a single car) we'll definetly convert it to living space.

It's something to consider for the future- at least in our case we never regret it. Even when headed outside to the car on frozen mornings.

One thing that works for me is good positive reinforcement. Sometimes presentation, selling points and perseverance can really pay off.

Try this (If you haven't already)
Next time you two are sitting in that nice, comfortable chair watching your big screen- ask to close her eyes and try to picture herself watching in the living room at your new house with you and your friends. How nice it would be with the extra space for so many reasons.

Now keeping the same thoughts, imagine all of you in a new, dedicated room especially designed for the purpose. Just for fun, imagine money is no object. What kinds of things would she like? Color of walls, furniture etc.

There may be ways to encourage exitement and create a common goal.
