Wii Virtual Console & Wii Ware Weekly Release

Re: Wii Virtual Console Details

Are the games kept on the Wii's flash harddrive? I know you have to buy the $20 classic controller to play the non-NES games. To buy them, does it work out with a points system like XBOX Live arcade?
I attempted to play the Wii last month at the local GameStop. Something about it says to me I'd have to play it at a buddies house to get the hang of it.

Games are stored on the Wii system memory once they are downloaded. The system memory is somewhat small, which has been a bone of contention for many users, especially considering how prominently the "virtual Console" and now "Wii-Ware" seems to play in Nintendo's long-range marketing plans. If (when) you run out of system memory storage, you can do one of two things, back up your games (or specialty channels) to an SD card and copy it back to the Wii system memory whenever you'd like to play them again. Or, you can simply delete them. The records for all Wii-Shop channel purchases are stored on the Nintendo servers. Once you delete a game, the designation of your deleted content on the Wii-Shop Channel changes from "downloaded" to "downloadable." You can re-download it back to your Wii system memory at no charge whenever you want to revisit an old title. Not a perfect system if you prefer going the hard-drive route, but it certainly gets the job done, and helps keep hardware prices low.

As far as the classic controller goes, a major part of the virtual console library works just fine using a GameCube controller. Even though I have a classic controller, I almost always use my trusty WaveBird to play everything from Super Mario and Super Metroid to Castlevania. All play fine... in fact, better IMO... with the Bird.

Wii is using "flash memory". While the proper (e.g. at least 20gb or something) hard drive would be better, these retro games fortunately doesn´t take that much space.. Not sure about "WiiWare"? How much space these games take?

Re: Wii Virtual Console & Wii Ware Weekly Release

I think it totally depends on the game. For instance, Dr. Mario doesn't take that much space up, since it's a traditional 2D drop-style puzzle board, but Lost Winds, for instance, is a fully rendered 3D game, with lots of backgrounds and interactions, and so takes up more space.

Re: Wii Virtual Console & Wii Ware Weekly Release

I've had no trouble transferring larger titles over to my 2GB SD card to make room for some of the larger releases (Sin & Punishment, Lost Winds). It's also comforting knowing that all my games are stored in the Wii itself, and I won't ever need an internet connection to access them. Because the save / save state files are stored in Wii System Memory, and take up very little room, when you transfer titles back to Wii System Memory your saved progress remains.

I don't know how Nintendo is going to handle their memory limitations down the line. I don't even know how an "upgrade" would be possible, considering the hardware, and making games playable directly off SD cards would probably be considered too large of a piracy risk.

Right now it's not too bad swapping games around, but when hundreds upon hundreds of titles are available, the amount of transferring people are going to have to do will be ridiculous.

One current advantage to the limitation is that because fewer games are available for me play at any given time, I give each individual title more attention than when I have to skip between dozens and dozens (as on PSN or XBL).

Re: Wii Virtual Console & Wii Ware Weekly Release

Some interesting news: I read today that Mega Man 9, a true installation in the original series, will be appearing on Wii Ware. This would be the first Mega Man (in the root series) to appear since 8, which was on the Saturn/Playstation. That's pretty sweet!

Re: Wii Virtual Console & Wii Ware Weekly Release

Sorry about no updates, I've been out of town, but enough about me, in the last two weeks, the updates are as follows:

VC:
SMS: Sonic the Hedgehog
GEN: Splatterhouse 2
TG16: Break In
TG16: Star Parodier

WiiWare:
Wild West Guns
Strongbad Ep.1: Homestar Ruiner

A note for Concerned Parents: "Break In" is a pool game, not a game where 4 people can get together for a fun-filled evening, enjoying some good 'ol virtual B&E. You wnat that, it's called GTAIV.

Another note: You'll note that "Strong Bad" contains "Ep. 1" in the title. It is out of a planned 5 episodes total.*

*Unless George Lucas somehow gets himself involved and suddenly declares that it will now actually have 5 prequel games, at which point they'll re-release the original 5 games with no challenge left in them, all the jokes dumbed down so children can understand them, then release 5 more games that have Strongbad's father teaching us about spelling, math and morality.

Sorry about no update last week, but I was in Denver for CEDIA. This update will include this week and Last week.

VC:
NES: Clu Clu Land
SNES: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
TG16: Cho Aniki
TG16: Final Soldier

WiiWare:
My Aquarium
Groovin' Blocks

If you've never played Super Mario RPG, I highly recommend it. One of the best games for the SNES to ever come out.

First of all, thanks for this list - I find it quite handy to see what has recently been released for the virtual console.

Second, I'm off to download Super Mario RPG, because I agree, it's one of the top titles for the system (man, did the snes ever dominate the rpg market...).

Re: Wii Virtual Console & Wii Ware Weekly Release

I am so torn on whether or not to get Super Mario RPG.
I do need a new game to play and I haven't touched my Wii since GTA 4 came out.

But from Josh and Casey and the numerous people I've read that think it's the best RPG, I think I'll be downloading this tonight.

VC:

NES - Super Dodgeball
GEN - Vectorman

WiiWare:

Mega Man 9
PLATTCHEN Twist n' Paint

If you haven't been keeping up on the latest news, Mega Man 9 for WiiWare is a true 8-Bit sequel to mega man 8 (Normally I'd say "obviously", but since there's been 4 million documented mega man offshoot games, I am not doing that this time). It features graphics identical to the old-school NES days, and appropriately synthesized music. Announced already for downloadable content, Protoman will appear as a playable character. You heard me, that yellow and red guy with the shield and the scarf that flaps in the wind...Playable. Truly, you can't go wrong with this title. If you're a mega man fan, and have the Mega Man Classic Collection for the GC, this is a REQUIRED download. That's it for today's list.

Thanks for that. Sometimes I feel I have this thread all to myself, and I'm just here monologue-ing in the dark. I do know that's not true though, since the hits counter on this thread is one of the highest in the VideoGames forum. It's good to know people use it. On that note, I know there's not much for ongoing comments in this thread, but if there's anything you'd like to know that I haven't posted, or suggestions for better dealing with releases or listings, let me know. I'm open.
