Re: Got Questions? Ask our resident expert, Robert Zohn
Robert,
Also as a follow up, the form from Toshiba for the 3 free HD DVD's didn't come with the player. Can I just print that off of your web site, and they will accept it? Also, the packing slip doesn't show what was ordered, or a price. What would I use for a reciept for that?
Thank you for your quick reply!

Re: Got Questions? Ask our resident expert, Robert Zohn
Hello Robert,
Do you know if there are any plans for Pioneer to offer an upgrade to there BDP-HD1 Blu-ray player, so it can decode DTS-HD and Dolby True HD? And how does it compair to the Panasonic BD-10 Blu-ray player? At this time I am saving up for a Panasonic Blu-ray and might purchase a Pioneer Elite reciever after that to replace my old Yamaha RX-V995.

Robert -
A non-technical question. When will you be back in the store after CES? I had planned to stop over to see you over the holidays but a slight cold got in the way of my plans. Looks like it will have to wait until after CES (I'm not heading out there since I prefer the relative "saneness" of CEDIA).
Thanks.

What I am uncertain about is whether I should use the inputs of the receiver for this and connect it to the TV via HDMI as well. Normally, more cables = more signal loss due to connector loss, cable length loss, etc.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Let me field the HDMI situation. One of the advantages of connecting your HDMI components (especially the PS3) to the receiver first and then to the TV is that HD players (both formats) will pass uncompressed ("lossless") audio codecs like TrueHD via HDMI and this should allow you to get the best possible sound from Blu-ray movies in your case. The only other way to get lossless audio would be by using 5.1 analog inputs on your receiver (and the PS3 doesn't have 5.1 analog outputs if I recall correctly).
I really wouldn't worry about "more" wires (especially since you wouldn't need 5.1 analog audio wires if applicable). And I wouldn't worry about signal loss with HDMI as long as we aren't talking about VERY long wire lengths. With normal length cables (6'-10') there is no concern at all. And as long as the connections are secure, I wouldn't worry about connector loss when dealing with digital signals. These loses and degradation are much more relevant to analog situations.

| Actually Panasonic's BMP-BD10 and Pioneers Elite BD player have 7.1 analog outputs that support 7.1 Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus audio. |
I was sure that the Panasonic BMP-BD10 was the only player so far that had 7.1 analog outputs. Pioneer's web site does not show close ups of the analog outputs. And the one photo they show of the back only shows a 5.1 analog out. Did Pioneer update there player and not there web site?

Thanks for the clarification Robert as I also wanted to make sure the player was not updated on us. It would have been great if they would have shipped the player with 7.1 analog outs.

It would have been nice because I do like the ability to play video and audio files via a ethernet conection. However for me it was not enough without 7.1 outputs and no lossless decoding. This may all end up being mute once players with HDMI 1.3 have become available. I may just end up waiting for a Blu-ray player with HDMI 1.3 as my next reciever will most likely have HDMI 1.3.

Let's hope it's a "moot" point instead of a "mute" point or else you will experience audio loss!

Seriously, it has been reported elsewhere that the Sony PS3 (which has HDMI 1.3 output) will handle all the HD audio codecs decoded over HDMI via a firmware update - sometime in March. If that's the case then my HDMI 1.1 pre-pro will do just fine for a little longer than I first thought. HD-DVD (according to the HD-DVD chat we had here a while back) will require an HDMI 1.3 pathway (and appropriate decoding at the receiver/pre-pro end to handle DTS HD) even though TrueHD and DD+ lossless work just fine via HDMI 1.1.
At the moment I'm able to watch and listen to all HD formats currently available and I hope for some clarification on the DTS HD (and DTS HD-MA) situation by the time that SW arrives.

Hi Robert,
Have you heard if there are any forthcoming firmware updates for first gen toshiba HD-DVD players?
Thanx in advance.
