Got Questions? Ask our resident expert, Robert Zohn

Re: Got Questions? Ask our resident expert, Robert Zohn

Robert,

Also as a follow up, the form from Toshiba for the 3 free HD DVD's didn't come with the player. Can I just print that off of your web site, and they will accept it? Also, the packing slip doesn't show what was ordered, or a price. What would I use for a reciept for that?

Thank you for your quick reply!

Re: Got Questions? Ask our resident expert, Robert Zohn

Hello Robert,

Do you know if there are any plans for Pioneer to offer an upgrade to there BDP-HD1 Blu-ray player, so it can decode DTS-HD and Dolby True HD? And how does it compair to the Panasonic BD-10 Blu-ray player? At this time I am saving up for a Panasonic Blu-ray and might purchase a Pioneer Elite reciever after that to replace my old Yamaha RX-V995.

Leigh, we are shipping the XA2 on 1/3/07.

David, no official announcement. But I would be very surprised if Pioneer did not provide a lossless audio firmware update.

Robert -

A non-technical question. When will you be back in the store after CES? I had planned to stop over to see you over the holidays but a slight cold got in the way of my plans. Looks like it will have to wait until after CES (I'm not heading out there since I prefer the relative "saneness" of CEDIA).

Thanks.

Robert, did you have a chance to play around with the XA2 since you were suppposed to get them in store today? What are your initial impressions versus the A2?

Re: Got Questions? Ask our resident expert, Robert Zohn

Danny, I am sorry to say I did not have much time at all as I worked in the shipping department all day getting al of our XA2 orders out the door.

Last week I used one and today I set one up and looked at some excellent HD DVDs. The image quality was excellent and I loved playing around with the color management tools.

I'll have more time to enjoy the XA2 at CES and once I take one home, which I expect to be by the third week of January.

Early reports are excellent from the few customers I spoke with tonight.

Robert:
Not sure if you can help me with projector question...if so.....

I have a three yr old In Focus SP7200 that seems to be dead. I get a flickering green light and clicking noise on the power button when I try to boot it up. I've replaced the bulb, but this doesn't work. Do I:

a) send to in focus for repair bill of $548
b) purchase a new comparable in focus projector ...if yes, what is comparable
c) buy a new projector from another manufacturer

Not sure of my best option and need your expert opinion

I like some of the new projectors from Optoma, Mits and Epson. Optoma has the HD70 for $999 that looks great.

Robert,

Just a quick reminder regarding my 12/06/06 post. I was trying to find out about when 7.1 would be available on HDDVD's hardware & software. You mentioned you would ask on your CES panel. Thanks for the help especially during this busy time.

Jim, no date as of now. When it is supported you will only be able to get 7.1 through the HDMI output.

Re: Got Questions? Ask our resident expert, Robert Zohn

Robert,

I am knew to all of this and am looking of some impartial expert advice. I just purchased a Hitachi 42hds69 and have made up my mind that I want to get a high definition player. However, I have been shopping for the past month and cannot decide what player would be the best for my particular television. My plasma broadcasts 1080i and 720p.

I am definately on a budget, so the low cost players would be most appealing to me. The three players I keep coming to are the Toshiba A-2, Xbox 360 with the addon, and the PS3 (note-I don't already have a xbox360 core system).

Aside from the overall concern regarding the format war, each player seems to have its downside.

PS3---Formating issues regarding TV's that don't support 1080p. Also, the inability to upconvert standard DVD's.

360 Add on---I don't have VGA, so picture and audio wouldn't be as good through component (i.e., couldn't utilize the HDMI on my TV). Also, can't upconvert standard DVD's through component cables.

A2---For the same price I could be getting the ability to play games among other things.

These are just some of the things that are holding me back on each platform. Am I correct on these issues? Is there an option which is a better fit for me with my particular television?

I am just looking for an impartial opinion. Thanks for any advice you might have.

Re: Got Questions? Ask our resident expert, Robert Zohn

Ken, if you want to have a gaming console/combo HD optical player I like both platforms. We only sell the xBox 360 and the HD DVD adaptor and not the PS3.

That being said, the HD-A2 is the best choice for your system if your main concern is watching HD and SD DVDs.

Re: Got Questions? Ask our resident expert, Robert Zohn

Hello all:
Robert Z:

I posted this to the 'newbies' forum and only got a couple of replies. Any
input would be appreciated.

This is my first post, and I see I am not alone here with basic questions.

I have the following components in my new Home Theater arsenal...

DirecTV HD DVR (HR 20) with HDMI and component out.

JVC HD-P70R1U HD TV with 2 HDMI inputs, multiple component and standard inputs, DVI, etc.

Sony PS 3 with HDMI output

Onkyo TX-SR804 receiver with 2 HDMI inputs and one HDMI out.

Hsu Ventriloquist speakers and Hsu Subwoofer.

ButtKicker LFE Power Amplifier (X-mas present from my wife)

SONY upconverting DVD player with HDMI out (don't recall the model right now).

Since my TV has two HDMI inputs, and my older receiver did not have HDMI, I have currently hook my PS3 and DirecTV HD DVR into the two HDMI inputs of the TV, and rout the output of the audio to my surround sound receiver.

What I am uncertain about is whether I should use the inputs of the receiver for this and connect it to the TV via HDMI as well. Normally, more cables = more signal loss due to connector loss, cable length loss, etc.

I am also considering 14 gauge wire with banana plugs, but am not certain if I am okay with locking plugs or if I need to solder (not really in my skill set ).

Any suggestions on an optimal setup would be appreciate.

Finally, for the surround sound speakers, the center front one is quite large and the suggestion is to place it at hearing level directly in front of the listener. However, with a 70" TV and a stand, if I mount it on the wall above the TV, it will now be ~ 3 feet higher than the listener. I could put in in the stand below the TV, but then it would be ~ 2 feet below the listener. Which is preferred, and do the two front satellites need to be at the same height as the front center speaker?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Let me field the HDMI situation. One of the advantages of connecting your HDMI components (especially the PS3) to the receiver first and then to the TV is that HD players (both formats) will pass uncompressed ("lossless") audio codecs like TrueHD via HDMI and this should allow you to get the best possible sound from Blu-ray movies in your case. The only other way to get lossless audio would be by using 5.1 analog inputs on your receiver (and the PS3 doesn't have 5.1 analog outputs if I recall correctly).

I really wouldn't worry about "more" wires (especially since you wouldn't need 5.1 analog audio wires if applicable). And I wouldn't worry about signal loss with HDMI as long as we aren't talking about VERY long wire lengths. With normal length cables (6'-10') there is no concern at all. And as long as the connections are secure, I wouldn't worry about connector loss when dealing with digital signals. These loses and degradation are much more relevant to analog situations.

Re: Got Questions? Ask our resident expert, Robert Zohn

Actually Panasonic's BMP-BD10 and Pioneers Elite BD player have 7.1 analog outputs that support 7.1 Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus audio. They also support the same audio codec through HDMI.

Unfortunately, BD players do not support lossless audio like TrueHD audio as HD DVD players do.

I was sure that the Panasonic BMP-BD10 was the only player so far that had 7.1 analog outputs. Pioneer's web site does not show close ups of the analog outputs. And the one photo they show of the back only shows a 5.1 analog out. Did Pioneer update there player and not there web site?

Dave, I prefer to use my special HTF page here http://www.valueelectronics.com/htf.htm .

I have a photo of the back of the Elite BD player and you can see the analog outs. Looks like you are correct now that I look closer they are only showing 5.1 analog outputs.

Re: Got Questions? Ask our resident expert, Robert Zohn

Thanks for the clarification Robert as I also wanted to make sure the player was not updated on us. It would have been great if they would have shipped the player with 7.1 analog outs.

It would have been nice because I do like the ability to play video and audio files via a ethernet conection. However for me it was not enough without 7.1 outputs and no lossless decoding. This may all end up being mute once players with HDMI 1.3 have become available. I may just end up waiting for a Blu-ray player with HDMI 1.3 as my next reciever will most likely have HDMI 1.3.

Let's hope it's a "moot" point instead of a "mute" point or else you will experience audio loss!

Seriously, it has been reported elsewhere that the Sony PS3 (which has HDMI 1.3 output) will handle all the HD audio codecs decoded over HDMI via a firmware update - sometime in March. If that's the case then my HDMI 1.1 pre-pro will do just fine for a little longer than I first thought. HD-DVD (according to the HD-DVD chat we had here a while back) will require an HDMI 1.3 pathway (and appropriate decoding at the receiver/pre-pro end to handle DTS HD) even though TrueHD and DD+ lossless work just fine via HDMI 1.1.

At the moment I'm able to watch and listen to all HD formats currently available and I hope for some clarification on the DTS HD (and DTS HD-MA) situation by the time that SW arrives.

Re: Got Questions? Ask our resident expert, Robert Zohn

Robert, I was wondering what you heard about the 3 free movies that came with the Toshiba players. It doesn't affect me per se but I've been reading about people at different forums (including this one) that have called and have been told they would have to resubmit their info since it was never received the first time. Is there any way you could contact someone at Toshiba about this? This seems like a very easy way to upset a lot of new customers if nothing is done.

Thanks.

Re: Got Questions? Ask our resident expert, Robert Zohn

Danny, I have already contacted the correct folks at Toshiba and they are looking into the fulfillment house and their records so hopefully a solution will be forthcoming.

Jaxon's dad, I do not have any dates, but Toshiba engineering has a couple of upgrades slated for the first generation HD DVD players. However, the main focus for now is the next two XA2 upgrades.
