FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION discussion

Has anyone else seen Christopher Guest's new movie: For Your Consideration?

My wife and I saw it last Wednesday and I'm still trying to digest it. For me, it wasn't a constant laugh out loud fest like MIGHTY WIND was, but was rather more like WAITING FOR GUFFMAN in that it will probably take a couple of viewings to "get" it. I would imagine that those who are more familiar with the inner workings of the movie industry will find it funnier since they will catch all the in jokes.

Fred Willard is teamed up with Jane Lynch this time around and their scenes are uproariously funny. Catherine O'Hara's performance has received rave reviews and deservedly so. She is wonderful in this.

I would recommend this, but not for kids as there is some very bad language in the film.

Re: FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION discussion

Saw it over the weekend. I agree that it's not "laugh-out-loud" funny like Best in Show or Mighty Wind.

Q: how in the world did they do the "before and after" make-up on Catherine O'Hara? I'm assuming she didn't actually have the horrendous "work" done on her face that the mockumentary depicts....

Fred Willard's interviews of the "losers" were painfully funny.

The scene where the suits want "some minor changes" ("just take the Jewishness out of it") is also painfully funny - and probably one of the "truest" scenes in the movie, regarding "real Hollywood".

Re: FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION discussion

Catherine said that she manipulated her nose shape by "breathing in" and holding it. It's sounds painful to do. Her lips were a make-up job. Dunno how they did it, but it looked hilarious.

Re: FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION discussion

I enjoyed it, but it feels like only half (maybe two thirds) of a movie, compared to something like A Mighty Wind. Maybe it's because there are already so many behind-the-scenes parodies that there's not as much new territory to cover. Maybe it's because Hollywood is already a self-parody. Or maybe it's because they spent so much time getting each character's awful hairstyle just right that they ran out of inspiration.

My favorite moment was the parody of Charlie Rose. Very funny and painfully true.

Re: FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION discussion

Ya know, there were a lot of things I laughed out loud over, but this feels like two totally different bits of movies strung together. The first half is funny and satirical; the second is absolutely depressing. Fred Willard is utterly genius in the limited part he has. I just wish there was more than 86 minutes.

Re: FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION discussion

My main complaint is that the characters are forgettable and barely exist. We don't get to know any of them at all, and the movie suffers...

Re: FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION discussion

I found this to be funnier than Mighty Wind, but lesser of a movie. Definitly not as funny as Best in Show or Guffman; tastes vary. Still a lot of funny parts.

I was surprised to see they made the Charlie Rose segment so clear, whereas the entertainment news or the TV movie critics didn't as obviously target anyone.

Re: FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION discussion

Just saw this last night. I loved the trailer...but the film didn't quite hold up overall. Still, an enjoyable satire with alot of truths it seems. Like Michael did, the Charlie Rose spoof was brilliant.

Alot of it was kind of sad too in that it shows the brutal side to Hollywood. There were some funny moments. My favorite character might have been played by Jennifer Coolidge (the female producer)...." I want some Latin food?"

Pretty good film. Overall, a 7.5/10.

For those who don't like the flick the first time, give it another look. I saw it theatrically and felt disappointed. However, I enjoyed it MUCH more when I saw it a second time...

Re: FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION discussion

I enjoyed the film, and thought there were some absolutely brilliant parts of the film - the Willard/Lynch scenes, for a start.

But overall, I was disappointed. I do think it should have been better, given the talent of the people involved and their history for producing great comedies.

My main problem with the film was just that I thought it was unbelievable that such incredible buzz could build around such an obviously bad film. The films that unfulfilled buzz builds around are films liked Dreamgirls or Flags Of Our Fathers - pretty good films, that maybe have a few flaws that hold them back. Internet buzz could explain the cast's excitement, but all the Oscar prognosticators as well? Never happen.

There was some nice Hollywood satire - the Purim-to-Thanksgiving change in particular was rather funny - but we've all seen Hollywood satires before, and there was just nothing terribly new about it.
